Having met Dame Ann Leslie at the Woodstock Literary Festival, I can attest that she is a living legend, and one who is always happy to talk to people. Her memoir, Killing My Own Snakes, is essential reading. Ann Leslie has had an exciting, varied and eye-opening life.Starting out as a trainee reporter in the Daily Express' Manchester office after university, under the resentful Tom Campbell, Ann w

Don't Sleep, There are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle" is a new book written by Daniel L. Everett, a linguist and missionary. I wanted to mention the book because it is not everyday that a (non-textbook) book pertaining to linguistics is published. The book is a non-fiction account of the author's time spent in Brazil studying the language of the Piraha tribe. I am very much loo

When Psychopaths Go to WorkIn popular culture, the image of the psychopath is of someone like Hannibal Lecter or the BTK Killer. But in reality, many psychopaths just want money, power, fame, or simply a nice car. Where do these psychopaths go? Often, it's to the corporate world. In their new book, “Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go to Work,” Paul Babiak, an industrial-organizational psycho
Which snakes possess the ‘deadliest venoms’?
This is an age old question which can be argued time and time again. Ultimately the most deadly snake (with the most toxic venom), and the most dangerous snake are two entirely different concepts. Some of the snakes with the most toxic venom (as recorded by LD50 on mice and guinea pigs) rarely [...]
who said the creators of Snakes on a Plane were dumb, mindless and petty. That they were trying to hard to be original, that they knew they could get Sam Jackson 'cause he'll be in pretty much every shitty movie until Tarantino makes everyone forget about the bad. Now what do you people have to say for yourself. Sure, not Snakes, but Cheetahs are just as scary, plus with no where to run on a plan
You may recall that I've been trying to track down current and legitimate research on the fear of public speaking. The same tired old statistic "People fear speaking more than they fear death" has been eagerly accepted and repeated as fact, even though the study that is usually quoted is over 30 years old. While digging around for current research, I came across this 2001 Gallup poll on American Fe
To say time's tied a lot of baggage to punk is no understatement. Between its tendency to recycle rather than innovate, shun new ideas, stick to the safe shelter of the scene and ineffectively juggling its history and ideology, it's a wonder it hasn't completely reverted to an old man's preservationist society by now.So how does a band stay true to punk's core values without finding itself bogged

Yesterday morning, as I was walking to get the morning paper on my lawn (yes, I still subscribe to a daily newspaper…so sue me), I heard a ear shattering scream come from my next door neighbor’s house. There were two flaws:Closing the door would not prevent him

Brandon Webb pitched six innings of three-run ball and doubled in the go-ahead runs in the fourth inning as the Diamondbacks held off the Giants 5-4 at Chase Field. Webb walked two and struck out seven to improve to 5-and-0 on the season. Chris Snyder had a two-run single for Arizona, which overcame an early 3-0 deficit to win for the fifth time in six games. If you are one of the legions of people who have acquired, or are about to obtain a new pet snake, then you are also about to have a rewarding experience. Snakes have a lot to teach us. A properly maintained terrarium can be a work of art - many are prominently displayed in homes - so long as the snake keeper keeps some essential information in mind:· Be sure you give your snake enough heat - that means enough for the snake, not you. A snake is best kept at warmer, summer temperatures of 85 – 100 degrees F, unless being cooled for hibernation. Temperate zone species may tolerate a 30 degree drop in temperature at night, but tropical species rarely do well with such fluctuations.· Never, ever use your snake to scare somebody! Many people are afraid of snakes, some pathologically so. Usi
That wasn't a rhetorical question. I'm just wondering, seriously, why are shoes with snakes on them the new it thing? Snakes can make fascinating and entertaining pets, but they're not quite the ideal pet for everyone. They require special care and requirements, and should only be kept by those willing to commit to their care.Choosing the type of snake is your first step. Some snakes are more dangerous than others, and the types of snakes range from common, harmless garter snakes to large and dangerous pythons. It's important to research types of snakes before making a decision. Take into consideration its special needs and requirements, as well as the danger in handling the type of snake.Regardless of the type of snake, you will need to house it in a secure enclosure with no gaps or open areas through which the snake can escape. A glass structure, like a large fish tank may be ideal. Just be sure the lid

It's no secret that I wasn't fond of all the... creative license... taken with the live-action Transformers movie. In areas where poisonous snakes are known to visit gardens, three approaches are commonly adopted by the homeowner. One is to be so frightened of the thought of such creatures lurking in the undergrowth that the outdoor space is paved over instead of being turned into a garden. A second approach, by far the more common, is to be unaware or to ignore the potential danger and to pretend it does not exist. The third and best option is to continue to use the garden without fear and trepidation, but to take one particular step that for all practical purposes, removes all possibility of venomous snakes threatening the safety of those who use the garden. The legitimate fear of snakes should neither deter one from planting a garden, nor from covering the earth with some form of organic mulch; act
Corn snakes are the most popular pet snake there is, and for a very good reason. These are snakes with a very good temper, and they are very easy to keep in an enclosure. Their adult size will usually be between 4 to 6 feet, and they have a very slender body type. The "original" corn snake has a black and white checkered pattern on their bellies that resembles a corn cob. I say original because corn snakes have been bred to get the most amazing colors and patterns; spotted, striped, no pattern, and all kinds of colors. Even pet shops usually have a wide variety of these "morphs".Corn snakes live for a long time, around 15 to 20 years, so keep this in mind when buying one. In this care sheet I will try to explain the most important sides of having a pet corn snake.SetupWhen you get your fir

When attempting to respond to extreme forms of religious idiocy, I often feel as if I am attempting to empty the oceans with a spoon. Well, it is time to again visit Kentucky for some more snake-handling fun!It seems that a Kentucky couple is suing a foster-care agency after the agency revoked their foster-care license for refusing to steer clear of snake-handling religious services. The couple claims that they have never taken their foster children to the services but refuse to say whether they have handled snakes themselves. Now they are alleging that the foster-care agency has violated their Constitutional freedom to practice their religion after taking back their foster children and revoking their license. I certainly hope a foster-care agency has the right to screen potential foster parents for serious mental illness and to respond accordingly when a mentally ill couple demonstrate the dangerous nature of their delusion.Tags: religion, Constitution, snake-handling, Christianity, c

By: Jason Petrina Snakes need a comfortable and secure home in your home. Having the safest enclosure for your snake is the important to you and your family. Many snakes, such as King snakes are known for finding a way to escape out of the cage. It isn’t hard to make your snake a home, but you have to find the right enclosure to prevent the chance of them escaping. Snakes are very clever animals, they will even try to get out of the smallest outing if possible, they also have an advantage of having no arms or legs at all! The shelter for your snake should be large enough that they are able move around in the enclosures. Snake enclosures usually come in forms called cages and vivarium. One side of their enclosure should be warm and the other side should be cold. I suggest adding a hide box to the shelter because snakes get stressed out just like humans, a hide box is great for your snake to get away from his regular surroundings sometimes. Your snake needs a water dish that is large e
