Image Source Slugs and snails! Just the thought of them munching their way through my favourite hostas and nibbling the tender shoots of my emerging perennials is enough to have me declare death and destruction on what is, essentially, just another of nature’s creations. I wouldn’t like to see them disappear entirely – that wouldn’t be good for the birds, hedgehogs and frogs that enjoy m
I have two younger brothers and there is enough age distance between us that, watching from afar as they grew up, I knew raising boys wasn't for me. Midnight fishing trips, karate sparring in the kitchen, "made you look," and other manliness just confused me and I said for years that I never wanted to have boys. Just daughters if you please. And then I found out that Spencer was coming. The day
Users of a busy carriageway in Germany witnessed a fuss caused by a large number of snails, which became a cause of several accidents. Some experts believe that the mass migration of these snails could have been due to climate change since snails sought a more becoming environment.
The French call them Escargot, we call them Caracóis - they’re not the same type of snail, nor do we bathe them in butter like the French, but they’re equally delicious, and right now they’re available in restaurants across the country.
I’m pretty sure every culture around the globe has some sort of food that [...]
Vintage 1990: My college boy is headed home on May 8th and I can hardly wait to see him. We talk at least every other day, but nothing beats knowing all your children are sleeping soundly in their rooms down the hall. It's hard to believe that he's almost half way done with college--unless of course, he follows in his mom's footsteps and opts for the five-year plan. Dad has made it clear that he's only paying for four years, so I'm thinking we're half way done. :) Many of you know that I write predominantly on issues pertaining to raising girls, but I absolutely LOVE being a mom to two boys. Who knows, maybe there is a "5 Conversations You Must Have With Your Son" in the future. If you have a boy, I hope you enjoy this excerpt from my Your Boy book!In the early years, I experienced firstha
~Snooper~The poor things over at Snakes and Snails are having issues and when they have these sort of issues, they have a propensity to drool and drivel. When this happens, they seek out fellow socialist sycophants and they feel beter about themselves. It is people like these that will be the death of us all because they have such a lethal case of BDS they cannot accept Truth or Fact. So sad to be so lacking in the ability to comprehend the enemies we face and have faced since the early 1970s. The cowards think as these blow hards do.What they cannot accept that is that Egypt and Saudi Arabia play a big part in the complications for the Caliphate to be reinstated. The main issues is that the US and other "democratic" societies stand in the way of the Islamic Caliphate. That is the only
~Snooper~Still trying to spin the recent fighting in Basra as a stunning success for their terrorist friends, Nicole Belle is drooling all over herself in the hopes it is true. Unfortunately for her and fortunately for the rest of Iraq and the coalition, she, again, is wrong. So are the idiots at Smoking Mutt Pool.As shown in a previous post, as the talking heads present their cases, it is clear that the recent "clashes" was meant to influence elections soon coming on the horizon...sound familiar? Al Sadr's "movement" may or may not have garnered some political clout but one thing is for sure - he hasn't gained anything but scorn from his fighters that were left out in the open. Some leader he turned out to be, eh? Maybe that is why the Leftinistra love him so much - he is a coward an
A beautiful book containing over 1020 color photos, depicting gastropods from the West Coast of the US to the Red Sea to South Africa.Half of the book is devoted to gastropods with shells and half of the book concerned with those without shells(nudibranchs) all live and in their natural habitat. There is nothing so brightly colored as a nudibranch and to see one "swim" is pure joy. A must have for divers, aquarists and those who love nature.Although there is some animals misidentified I find it still a good field guide and should be well received by anyone who appreciates beauty.
It's spring break, and tonight we are having a sleepover-to-end-all sleepovers at our house. Little sister Corrie went to stay with grandparents, and each of my three sons has a buddy staying over. There are six little boys between the ages of six and ten in my house. All at...

After enduring so many heart wrenching miscarriages, I have been really nervous about accepting this pregnancy even though it has been exactly what we have been hoping and praying for. Seeing him yawn today and move all around made it seem that much more real. [...]
Wonderbaby is fiercely independent and extremely strong-willed. This will, no doubt, come as no surprise to anyone who has followed my stories about her exploits, but, oddly enough, it comes as a fresh daily surprise to me, the person who spends most time with her, that she has the will and demeanour of a hyperintelligent adolescent jacked up on Twinkies. Or a rabid anthropomorphic badger, the

Take your foot off that poor defenseless critter - he was only doing his job.
It seems to me that garden snails have had a fallacious rap through history. Their PR manager has obviously skipped town with the contract fee and done little to promote these creatures' benefits. So much so, that most gardeners take great delight in crushing them or finding pallid ways to get rid of them - I too have been guilty as charged.
But, when you consider the purpose of these affable pests I'm sure you will agree that they have been completely under appreciated.
See, the way we've had garden snails promoted to us is similar to our indoctrination of terrorism. If we see a guy wearing a loose-fitting white gown, a turban on his head while sporting a long greying beard then immediately we're suspicious of his mobile phone use. Snails aren't as scary but they're viewed as garden terrorists ready to strike any plant at will.
Nothing could be further from the truth. These land-based mol

I really enjoy walking the coast and observe all the life living amongst the rocks, pebbles, sand and seaweed. My macro lens is a perfect tool to take photos of all this wonderful life.
Here you can see some snails and algae (I think it is gut weed (Ulva intestinalis)). Also notice all the beautiful details and colors in the sand/rocks.
Check out this other macro photo from the coast. It’s of a snail with seaweed as background. Liked the composition on that one.

The longer I live in France, the more I realize that all Pains aux raisins are NOT created equal here. Take for example, the Pains aux raisins in Burgundy. Oftentimes in France, you’ll come across many examples where a French region has adulterated changed a staple food of France, even naming it something different to suit its own tastes (and specialities) and to fight for their own regional culinary culture.Burgundy is known for a few things: its wine, its food, usually consisting of lots of wine: Coq au vin, which is chicken in wine, Boeuf Bourgignon, which is beef cooked in wine, Pochouse, a dish with 4 kinds of fish cooked in wine, Andouillette au chablis, which are sausages cooked in wine, Oeufs en meurettes, an interesting spin on eggs that are poached in wine, Les Tripes au Rosé de Marsannay, which is tripe cooked in wine. Are we seeing a pattern here? I think I now know why the people here are so friendly and happy.Anyway - probably most famous of all foods from Burgundy is
The locals have gotten to my son (10), eyed his nearly 5’6” frame, ever-widening chest, and size 11 feet. “You were MADE for football!”
I do not know one grown man who played football as a boy who does not also sport a permanent injury, usually in one or both knees.
Bird accomplished a concussion at one year old, and I remember the doctor talking about future sports – and that, you know, you

Now I have to admit that I'm not very egalitarian with my son and gender symbols. He does not own any dolls...and he does not have anything pink. I am bit less restrictive on his appreciation for flowers, however. And if you read my previous post you can understand why he owns his own play kitchen( gotta level the playing field on that one) Generally, he looks like a boy, acts like a boy and owns boy things. Were he a girl he would own both dolls and soccer balls- but he's not. It's really funny that I try not to let my life concepts interfere with my son- but they do.You see- I am quite sexist, but not in a traditional way. No. I actually think women are superior. As a feminist, I believe that women are capable of assuming all types of roles, but men are much more limited. It is a very rare man indeed who can stay home with a child- and yet it is not rare at all to find powerful women in business, politics, etc. Perhaps time and social changes will alter my view. But for the moment

My wife and I recently visited the doctors office for our 19 week sonogram appointment. It's the one where they check EVERYTHING. From fingers and toes, to cleft lips and any heart deformations. Turns out everything looks fine and we're having a BOY! We didn't really have a preference, only for a healthy and happy baby. Though I have to say whew! You see, my paternal line is pretty thin. My great grandfather was the only male of seven children, my grandfather the only male of four children, my father was an only child, and I'm my fathers only son. When searching the net for articles on the cost of raising a child nowa days, I came accross Bankrates baby cost calculator.
According to them it's going to cost about 190k to rasie a child until the age of 18! That's hard to believe. With this one being our first, we talk about having a couple more. Does that really mean about 600k? I'll have more time to pay off a mortgage than raising children. Can you say hand me downs, and peanu
