A Tribute to John Smoltz, The Christian Warrior
The following is a repost of an entry titled A Christian Warrior I wrote on August 1, 2006. John Smoltz, the inspiration for that post, announced yesterday he is undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery. At age 41, this very well could be the end of his career. It doesn’t really matter what I gain or lose on [...]

Smoltz To Go Under The Knife?
Well, so much for the closer experiment down in Atlanta. And from all accounts, it isn't looking good for Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz; according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, a press conference will take place Wednesday at 11:30 AM EST to discuss in depth Smoltz's future. One of the rumors floating around is that he will need to undergo season-ending surgery to repair his right shoulder.Smoltz

      John Smoltz makes history.
Last night I got to witness a piece of baseball history as John Smoltz racked up his 3000th strikeout. Now, to put this into perspective, there are only 15 other pitchers to ever accomplish this feat. I have to tell you whether you like the braves or not, you have to tip you hat to this man because he is truly an ambassador to the game of baseball. I have added a video and the new list of the top 16 to achieve this. Rank - PlayerTotalYears 1. Nolan Ryan 5,71427 2. Roger Clemens4,67224 3. Randy Johnson4,62920 4. Steve Carlton4,13624 5. Doctor John Smoltz?
I didn’t know that Skip Caray had been hospitalized earlier this month, then again I haven’t listen to a radio game in some time. Anyways, here’s I guess what you would call a heart warming moment when Skip returned Monday night. After reaching first base with his fifth-inning single on Monday, John Smoltz pointed toward the press box in the direction of legendary broadcaster Skip Caray, who has been battling some health problems that caused him to be hospitalized earlier this month. When Caray returned to work on Monday, Smoltz told his longtime friend that he’d dedicate a base hit to him. “I said the remedy for him would be a base hit,” a playful Smoltz said. “He thought it would help his metabolism if I got a base hit.” It’ll be a sad day, the day Skip passes. Honestly don’t want to think about it, it’s good to know he’s well and back in the booth doing his thing. Share This

Well it looks as though desperate times call for desperate measures, according to the AJC John Smoltz will get the start in tonights game instead of Buddy Carlyle. Quotes: Smoltz on Smoltz
Yesterday Smoltzy left in the bottom of the fourth after aggravating his already injured pinky, he also tweaked his shoulder. He thinks there wont be a problem when his turn comes up in the rotation this weekend. “Had they given me 10 minutes I would have been OK, to stretch my shoulder,” said Smoltz, who left [...]

      John Smoltz's Secret Weapon?
Congratulations need to passed along to Braves pitcher John Smoltz on his 200th victory. Nice job. In doing some reading about Smoltz's win we ran across this bit of interesting information about what Smoltz and the boys do in the clubhouse before games. Of course, there is the usual, listen to music, play cards, but in the Braves' clubhouse they have found another, unique way to pass the time. They play Connect Four. From Sports Gone South:No, that’s not a metaphor; they actually battle over that stupid game where you drop the checkers into slots and try to get four in a row. John Smoltz readied for his game against Greg Maddux a couple weeks back by going chip-to-chip against Jeff Francoeur. And they’re serious about this game; they’ve got a whole chart set up with tournament seedings and rules (”Player who was challenged goes first. If no winner, player who went second last time goes first…”). Too bad the A's don't play this. Milton Bradley would kick ass. (Sorry.)Her

Smoltz punches ticket to Hall of Fame
You might read that title and think that it's weird for whatever reason, but I'll explain. John Smoltz picked up his 200th career win tonight against the Mets, becoming the first pitcher in MLB history with at least 200 wins to go along with at least 150 saves. And Smoltz did it the only way he knows how. By pissing pure excellence. John went 7 innings, giving up 0 runs and striking out 5, on way to becoming the N.L.'s first seven game winner. He's now at 7-2 with an ERA of 2.58, meaning that my CY Young prediction is looking pretty solid right now.So yes, back to Hall of Fame thing. 200+ wins, 154 saves and has led the league in wins, strike-outs, win-percentage and saves. Cy Young winner in '96 and could've won another last year with some bullpen help. Most post-season wins (15) for any pitcher and was the one constant during the Braves unprecedented 14 year division streak and also picked up a World Series ring and a NLCS MVP along the way. That's what coming to mind right no

      John Smoltz Edges Gregg Maddux
Once they were in the same team, now they to faced each other to get a win. They enjoyed to lead Atlanta Braves to capture its division title every year but they are now in different jersey. Again John Smoltz edged Gregg Maddux as the Atlanta Braves defeated the San Diego Padres, 3-2, Wednesday night at the Turner field. The late rally from Andruw Jones who drove in a lead run with a single after Chipper Jones tied the game with a double. The victory gave John Smolts a 5-1 this season and 3-1 over Greg Madux. Maddux pitched 5 1/3 innings, after 72 pitches, allowing four hits, including an RBI single by Willie Harris in the fifth, and walked two.

Smoltz ready for Opening Day start
Braves ace John Smoltz pitched a day early on Thursday against the Mets, going six innings and allowing one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Smoltz was initially scheduled to face the Phillies on Friday, but with the Braves playing Philadelphia on Opening Day and Smoltz being their Opening Day starter, Smoltz called an audible. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Smoltz used his changeup more often in the game and expects to use it more during the season. "I feel like I have five pitches I can throw any time," said Smoltz. "I don't want to get carried away, but I've accomplished a lot of what I wanted to do this spring." In 20 innings this spring, Smoltz is sporting a 1.80 ERA with 17 strikeouts and three walks. He is scheduled to pitch again Tuesday before going on Opening Day. He remains intriguing among the top 25 starters to target on Draft Day. His age should be a concern, but that is what will allow him to be picked up affordably. It is also good t
