India has imposed a new ban on smoking in public places from October 2, 2008, the 139th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Four years ago too, one such ’ban’ was ’imposed.’ However, it was royally ignored and people continued to puff away in restaurants, clubs, bars, you name it. . .
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February this year every 10 dea
Everyone is equal, but some are more equal than the others. Rabid anti-smokers for instance. And here are we at it again. The same stoopidity, the same stubbornness, the same utter unconcern for people who smoke. "Wohi zaag, wohi safedi," and increased stoopidity in the bargain as "India becomes smoke-free" from 2nd October, 2008.Have you ever heard of big industries being heavily penalised in Indi
A smoking ban went into effect Tuesday in cafes, restaurants and bars across the Netherlands, as the country joins a growing list of European countries to tighten rules on tobacco use in public places.
I applaud Governor Riley for his support of the Clean Indoor Act. I hope that this will provide the last little push to finally get it through the House on Monday.

Donald Trump said Thursday that casinos in Atlantic City should sue over a smoking ban recently approved by the city council.

“Another unforeseen outcome of France’s smoking ban. That blue haze of cigarette smoke didn’t just add to the atmosphere of the nightclubs of Paris - it kept them smelling good, too.
For what is a nightclub, if not a place where hundreds of people gather, dance and get sweaty into the early hours? When half [...]
"Smoking is a habit that would not go away or die that easily in any smoker". Cigarette smoking is becoming a major concern these days with lots of people around the world already addicted to smoking, a habit which smokers find it very difficult to live without. Due to increasing danger to public health, lots of countries have taken a step forward and have introduced BAN on SMOKING in majority of public areas like the bars, restaurants, pubs, disco etc. Even some of the major companies have introduced this ban in their premises as well. If everyone is going to follow such strict rules then what is the solution left for smoker? With United Kingdom being one such country which is moving ahead with the Ban on Smoking as from July 01, 2007, there are smoking shelters being created for smokers to feel free to smoke only in those covered areas which are not going to cause any issues to the public health. The other major reason for such a ban could be due to the huge litter issue rising up
How bloody stupid are parents these days, that someone like New Democrat, Leonard Krog feels compelled to table a bill banning people from smoking in cars with children under the age of 16—and furthermore, what about people 17 years and older? Don’t they deserve the right to breathe without the stench and long term damage of second hand smoke as well?
While Wolfville, Nova Scotia councillors recently passed just such a smoking bill, it’s sadly mindblowing that there’s even a need.

Crime in the UK went up this week, at least by one crime anyway; and the Rolling Stones broke it.
What heinous crime was this? Rampant drug abuse? Destruction of property in a hotel room? Violating a small mammal?
No, it was smoking.
I know, what a let down.
As the band were performing at London's O2 Arena as part of their Bigger Bang tour they lit up on stage. Technically that's a work place, and to smoke there means you're liable to a £50 fine.
Yes, a whole £50. That'll teach these multi-millionaires a thing or two.
I'm torn on this one. I don't know if they're really out of...

Insurance companies are bracing themselves for a possible rise in home insurance claims, following the July 1st smoking ban. With people banned from smoking in public places, insurance companies are predicting an increase in the numbers of people smoking in the home, thereby increasing the risk of home fires and insurance claims.
According to recent research by the financial services provider, Abbey, 425,000 fires are started in homes each year by smoking materials, causing damages worth an average of £25,500. In addition, a Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) announcement in January of this year revealed that smoking was the biggest cause of fire-related deaths in the home. Nearly a third of all households have a smoker living in them, with an average of 132 deaths and 1,600 injuries a year caused by accidental home fires related to smoking materials. A Direct Line Home Insurance survey also suggests that following the ban, an additional 16 million ciga

I’m a rare breed methinks. I don’t know how many people were in England during the time of their non-smoking switchover and in Wales during the time of theirs. I mean, it’s not the sort of thing that you say to people, I know. But I think it’s a little impressive.
Either way, I have lived through 2 months of smoke free public buildings, and these are my observation, done in a handly list. The people who have benefitted, and the people who have lost out.
Who Benefits?
Non Smokers - obvious one straight off the bat. Non smokers don’t come home smelling like they’ve been ejaculated on by chimneys. I love this part of the smoking ban.
Smoking companies - surprisingly, a lot of people I know have taken up smoking. The logic behind it is now all their mates are heading out for a fag, nobody wants to be left alone, do they? It’s happened to me a few times and I go out and join them (most bars have areas where you can drink outside), but I know of a f
I HAVE this theory about death. If you're too fat, you'll die of some heart-related problem; if you're too thin, you'll die of some immune-system or blood-related problem; if you're just right, you'll be murdered because someone will be round to smash your smug little face in. If you're a smoker, well, it doesn't bear thinking about, diseases are queueing up to grab your butt. However, Nanny State (she's the one with permanently pursed lips who will never let you out to play) is once again taking a demolition ball to smash an ashtray. From tomorrow smoking is banned in all public places in England. As a non-smoker I have no particular problem with that. It will be good to have a drink in a pub without going home with your clothes smelling like a chain-smoking gorilla's armpit. Smokers will be that sorry little bunch outside the pub huddled under an open-sided shelter in the pouring rain. It can't have sides, like a bus shelter (more of which later) or a shed, you see, because

A Southampton licensee is hoping to get round the smoking ban by declaring his pub is ‘foreign soil’.Source: This article made me laugh, quite a novel idea to try and get round the upcoming smoking ban. By declaring his pub as an Embassy, it would be classed as foreign soil, and therefore not covered by UK law. Does that mean that all his drinks would be tax free too? A later article does quote a British Foreign Office official as saying: Redonda is a territory of Antigua and Barbuda, and so is not entitled to an embassy. Shame... Apparently he does have some other tricks up his sleeve. I just might and find some space on the beach in Antigua and smoke instead. Not sure if it would be legal though ;) (And I'm not talking about a law forbidding smoking
New Hampshire officially joins the rest of New England today. A smoking ban for bars and restaurants has been signed into law. Thank freaking goodness! While I respect my smoking friends and their interest in being able to stink up everything around them I am very happy to have smoking banned.
The law takes effect in 90 days so smokers will be able to enjoy the rest of the summer. It will be interesting to see if any restaurant changes early, or if they have a smoking party to mark the end. Interestingly of my favorite bars in Portsmouth, two of the top 4 are smoking bars. The Brewery went non smoking a couple years ago and had a short drop in traffic and then a boom in sales after that. Their clientèle changed, however. Some people just went elsewhere. What will happen to the final bars that held out to the end? I suspect those that held out will suffer the worst. But then again, where will those customers
This editorial appeared in the New Hampshire Union Leader, it shows more disapproval with the new direction New Hampshire is headed.
Whether or not you are for or against the new smoking ban in restaurants and bars, the government has no right to intervene in this manner and tell a private business owner how to run his business. If you don’t like smoke go to a place that doesn’t allow smoking because the owner made that decision, not the government. If they do allow smoking, go somewhere else. YOU DO HAVE FREE WILL.

HAIL! HAIL! to King John Lynch and his merry group of SS Storm Troopers who have struck at the heart and spirit of the New Hampshire Constitution with their approval on Thursday of the bill to ban smoking in bars and restaurants.
To pass and sign into law a bill telling business owners who their customers will or will not be strikes the heart of a free society. The basic foundation in any free society is to allow people, business owners in partic
Just when I thought the nanny state was going to totally take over the state the mandatory seatbelt bill was defeated.
The state Senate late this afternoon rejected mandatory seat belts for all ages, voting 16-8 against passage of House Bill 802.
The vote kept New Hampshire the only state in the country without such a requirement.
The bill had passed the House 153-140 on April 4.
This may show that the state government isn’t totally ready to regulate all aspects of our lives just yet. Maybe they will treat voters as adults after all. We finally won a battle.
But then there’s this:
The New Hampshire House today approved a ban on smoking in restaurants, cocktail lounges and some other public places, moving the bill to Gov. John Lynch, who is expected to sign it into law.
The vote today was 224-117, coming after a 216-135 vote rejecting a proposed amendment to allow separate “smoking rooms” in restaurant and lounges.
The bill also bans smoking in state-licensed public edu
Article Title: Pets Face Greater Health Risks With Advent OfSmoking BanAuthor: Jason Hulott1Britons' pets face health risks associated with passivesmoking, and says shocking research from pet insurer More Than, the risks will increase when the ban on smoking in bars andrestaurants comes in to force shortly in the UK. With over a million smokers in the UK saying that they'll goout less because of the ban and now stay in and smoke becauseof the ban, this is putting the nation's pet cats, dogs, birdsand other `small furries' at serious health risks. The research says that British pet owners enjoy a smoke, withnearly a quarter of them smoking every day. And 44 per cent ofthese admit that they do smoke indoors, often in the same roomas their pet. The effects of this smoking on pets can be the same as whathumans can suffer from, such as respiratory problems, coughing, watery eyes and even life threatening diseases such as lungcancer and chronic bronchitis. And in househol

One in five working men’s clubs in England and Wales fears it will be forced to close as a result of the smoking ban coming into force within the next few weeks, according to a poll.
Of 560 clubs surveyed for the BBC, more than four out of five (83%) thought takings would fall as smokers stayed away.
And 20% said they believed their club was “quite likely” or “very likely” to close.
The ban will start in Wales on April 2 and in England on July 1 and will prohibit smoking in pubs, clubs and enclosed public spaces, even if the area is only open to private members.
The Government originally wanted to exempt private clubs, but was overruled by the House of Commons.
The general secretary of the Club and Institute Union, Kevin Smyth, said the ban came on top of an increasing burden of red tape on clubs.
He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: “Gaming permits, extra increases in licensing fees and now another set of legislation w
This article just proves a point a made about a year ago: Liberals don't care if a $2.00 whorehouse were to open in someone's backyard. But all hell would break loose if someone lit a cig within two miles of it.From the article:A new measure in the Illinois House would ban smoking in vehicles when children eight or younger are riding. It would make it a class C misdemeanor, punishable by up to 30 days in jail and 15-hundred dollars in fines. The state Rep. that wrote this utter Stalinist piece of garbage is Mike Boland(D) of east Moline,IL. His claim is that the measure is "not an invasion of privacy, but to encourage individuals to be responsible".It's not an encouragement Mike, it's nothing more than liberals like you abusing power. To encourage, would mean public service announcements on television. You, congressman, are threatning people. No government has any right to tell me I can smoke in my car. This is an example of out of control government. The punishment for this is harsh
I am all for freedom and the power to decide for yourself if and when you want to smoke. Just not WHERE. However, I must say as an ex-smoker, I have very little sympathy for those that still choose to smoke knowing how bad it is for your health. It can cause irreparable damage. You WILL die. I am so anti-smoking because I have been to my grandmother's funeral. She died of lung cancer from too many years of smoking. Do yourself a favor and quit now or this...I am going to paste the full story in this post (if you click to read more) so that in case the story is taken off DW's website. Good luck. Not to even mention when you get home your clothes and hair STINK like smoke.I went from living in California where you cannot even smoke in a bar to living in Germany where they smoke EVERYWHERE. I even belonged to a gym where the employ
In past months, the Dutch government has been considering a smoking ban just as in many states across America and other countries in Europe. The Dutch have been able to smoke in restaurants, bars and other places for as long as anyone can remember that the idea has actually been a rough decision to make for some politicians. This will of course have an impact on hospitality businesses and coffee shops throughout the country and many are wondering how much of an impact. The previous government had agreed upon a phase out of smoking in public places, the new government is going to hold to the agreement, and the phasing will start in July of 08. This is how it will work. In restaurants and bars there will be a closed off section for smokers where there will be no waiter to wait on them. In the coffee shops, a similar sectioning will take place. You will have the counter to purchase your weed and other products then another section, closed off, to smoke your purchase and cigarettes.
