Smithsonian magazine 5th Annual Photo Contest
For the past four years, Smithsonian editors have judged a total of 58,500 photographs from more than 90 countries around the globe. As we enter our fifth year, we have a clear sense of what makes a photograph a Smithsonian winner. Technical quality, clarity and composition are all important, but so too is a flair for the unexpected and the ability to capture the right moment. We are excited when we can see the photograph through your eyes—through your skill, your passion, your vision. Contestants can enter photographs in five categories, The Natural World, Americana, Altered Images, Travel and People, that represent subjects of special interest to the magazine. Fifty finalists will be selected, ten for each of the five categories. Smithsonian will notify the 50 finalists by March 31, 2008. From these 50 finalists, five category winners and a grand prize winner will be selected. The entries of all winners and finalists will be published on the magazine's Web site on April 1, 2008. A

I received this book shortly before starting cetacean surveys in the south pacific and it was an incredible source of information. I have used many field guides and, although I never tested its 'water-proofness", it is simultaneously concise yet complete. It not only gives identification keys for individual species, but also keys to identifying individual animals. If you are a teacher, student, biologist or enthusiast, get it, wherever you are in the world.

      shame, smithsonian, shame on you
The Smithsonian Institution toned down an exhibit on climate change in the Arctic for fear of angering the U.S. Congress and the Bush administration, says a former administrator at the museum. Among other things, the script, or official text, of last year's exhibit was rewritten to minimize and inject more uncertainty into the relationship between global warming and humans, said Robert Sullivan, who was associate director in charge of exhibitions at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Also, officials omitted scientists' interpretation of some research and let visitors draw their own conclusions from the data, he said. In addition, graphs were altered "to show that global warming could go either way," Sullivan said.really? back to this whole idea that there is any debate about humans causing global warming? believe it or not, there is not two sides to this issue. it's here. we caused it. now we gotta deal. it's a sad day when an institution like the smithson

      Chloe Dao at The Smithsonian
When Chloe Dao wrote to us last May with an update on her life post-Project Runway, she mentioned that she had been invited to showcase her work at The Smithsonian Institute. Here's the latest from the Vietnamese American Heritage Project: The exhibit entitled "Exit Saigon, Enter Little Saigon" will open January 19, 2007 at the Smithsonian S. Dillon Ripley Center, Concourse Gallery. This is the first Vietnamese American historical exhibit at the Smithsonian. The exhibit tells the story of the Vietnamese American experience in America, from the significant influx in 1975 to the present. Chloe's emigration from Laos and Vietnam with her 7 sisters, where her parents smuggled their remaining money in their shoes, is a classic American Dream story and serves as an inspiration to Asian Americans. Chloe will have one of her gowns and a biography included in this exhibit. Runway fans in our nation's capital will want to check it out. The exhibit runs through March 31, then will g

      Congress slams Smithsonian's anti-religious attacks
A new report (see below) from the U.S. House of Representatives has condemned officials at the Smithsonian Institution for imposing a religious test on scientists who work there. And it suggests their attacks on a scientist who just edited an article on intelligent design are just the tip of the iceberg of an industry-wide fear of anything that suggests man might not have come from a puddle of sludge. The report, which cited a 'strong religious and political component' in the dispute (info), was prompted by a complaint from Dr. Richard Sternberg (homepage), who holds biology doctorates from Binghamton and Florida International universities and has served as a research associate at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. It was prepared for U.S. Representative Mark Souder, R-Ind., chairman of the subcommittee of criminal justice, drug policy and human resources, and easily confirmed Sternberg's harassment and discrimination allegations that his managers criticized him,
