Today was the day I was finally going to indulge my long time love affair with the Smart Car. Task at hand: The test drive. Planned outcome: Place an order for one. Sounds simple, right? Not in the least. I drove all the way to the Smart Car dealership in San Jose, California on a mission from the eco-gods. When I arrived, the guest parking area was empty and the lot deserted. When I ente

As urban roads and highways become increasingly congested with traffic, one of the latest trends in automaking is the extreme downsizing of the car. The Smart Car has done very well in Europe with its ultrasmall size, modern design and great gas mileage, while the MINI Cooper and other MINI models have reemerged to immense popularity. The Smart car is finally arriving to the United States. Its now trendy to go small and consume less energy. Who would of thought just 5 years it would come to this in the U.S. It will be interesting to see one of these next to a gigantic SUV like a hummer or Chevy Suburban.
The Smart Car only measures 9 feet long and 5 feet wide. Its still gas powered, but won't waste too much gas at 42 miles per gallon. The tiny car has a top speed of 90 mph. Not bad for a car you would think is as fast as a moped.
Eve the crash ratings are good, if you could imagine. It gets a 4 star crash rating. The smart car will be available in 3 models for about $11,000 to $17,000. Will there be a market beyond American cities for this cute car? I think Americans can go as little as a Honda Civic, but this size I have my doubts…
Check Smart Car USA website, and reserve yours for $99.

Researchers from the University of Tokyo, Oita University, the Shimane Institute of Health Science and Delta Tooling, an industrial equipment manufacturer, have developed a prototype smart car seat able of detecting when its occupant is on the verge of falling asleep.Though the seat can sense when the driver is sleepy, it is not yet equipped to respond. The next step will be to outfit the seat with an alarm function that is automatically activated when its occupant becomes drowsy. The researchers hope to make the smart seat commercially probably within five years.Source & Image:PinkTentacle

YouTube has carried some hilarious footage of smart fourtwo crash tests (including hitting a wall at 70mph) for a while now. Well, the NHTSA has finally crashed a few smarts in the name of insurance ratings safety and the verdict is in: the smart is safer than you might think. The diminutive German car gets four stars for driver safety and three stars for the passenger in the frontal crash test. Side impact testing revealed five-star performance, although a door did open during the test, "increasing the likelihood of passenger ejection." Granted, "starflation" has been an issue for the NHTSA, but like an underachieving politician, the smart is simply playing the expectations game. The fact that the tiny ride didn't explode into a million pieces of wound-irrita
Toyota has been showing concepts, prototypes and mock-ups of its 3+1 city car for the last four or so European motor shows, but here in Paris, it's the real thing. The theory of the design language is silly - Toyota calls it "vibrant clarity," but that's a state of mind I'd associate with inebriation. But the design itself is strong, clean and forward-looking. I stood in line to check out the in
