I think I've told y'all a time or three how very much I love my community. When we aren't busy painting things John Deere green on hot summer nights, or pulling awesome pranks on another, we are hosting a slew of events - all of which are named after a vegetable or farm animal. The 4th of July Potato Festival kicks off the festivities and is soon followed by the Quarterback Club Community Cookout

Life in Small Town America is great. There's very little crime, and what there is you can avoid by staying away from the wrong people. You know everyone, and everyone knows you, and you live close by relatives and friends who you've known all your life. You probably have enough space around you to do what you want, and even if you live in the middle of town, it gets dark enough on a clear night to
I live in a small town. Although I love where I have made my home for the past 7 years there are times when I wish I lived in a bigger city. I hate driving 30 minutes to Walmart, Target, Malls, etc. I hate that there is no summer camps or programs for Wesley that cost more than I make in a week. I hate the we don't even have a playground for the kiddos or a big park for us to run around in. I hate
While I was watching young gymnasts cartwheel down the street and a young juggler ride a unicycle as part of the 4th of July parade I was feeling pretty good about driving 400 miles to this town in Southern Oregon for this very American holiday. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days (which you might be if you live in a small town), you may have heard that presidential candidate Barack Obama has kicked up a shitstorm (or more accurately, the handlers of his opponents have) for daring to suggest that people in small towns are bitter and accordingly embrace right-wing causes. Here’s the full quote:
It’s not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
Guess what, people, he’s right.
How dare I say this? As John Cougar Mellencamp sings it, I grew up in a small town. I can’t say that I will live and die

After living in a small town as a child I found myself living in a suburb of Los Angeles, later to Nashville, then up to Minneapolis, etc. All large cities where anything I wanted was easily accessible and found in a brick and mortar building. Good thing since the internet was only a gleam in a computer geeks eye at the time!

sometimes adoption comes up in conversation out of nowhere. today was one of those days.standing outside of work this morning, savoring the last dregs of then-cold coffee, smoking that "i'm feeling damn accomplished" cigarette, and the manager of a shop on the next block walked past me. we talked briefly of "the holiday season", the serious renovation bearing down on the pedestrian mall, and ending with my tale of paying heed to the siren song of P!er One yesterday. she asked me if Chris and i had kids. when i perkily responded in the negatory, she asked "how old are you?". so i told her (uh, almost 35)."well, you still have options. you could always adopt. i always wanted to do that."my smile tightened and i nodded my head. "you're absolutely right, i have options".we wished each other a happy and stress-less week and parted company.__________________________on my way home from work today, i noticed one of my favorite seasonal shops was open. so i stopped in to see the owne
One of the joys of paying a parking ticket in Fairfield was the convenience and low cost. Parking tickets were $2 and could be paid by scrounging up a bunch of change from the car seats and ash tray and putting it all into the envelope that was the ticket, and then dropping it into one of the many drop boxes located all around the downtown area.
I got a ticket about three weeks ago and still haven’t paid it. The fee is now $10 and the city has removed all the drop boxes. I tried to take it to the court house and they told me I need to drop it off at the Police Station. Jeez, it’s like I’m a real criminal now. Gotta go turn myself in to the law.
It’s feeling a lot less small town today.
UPDATE: shortly after writing this I was running an errand and drove by a house with a pig running around in the front yard. So no need to panic everyone, nothing has really changed here.
For all the fussing I do about living in a small city in the midwest, it does have it's perks.
Last week we attended a football game in another town for my son, who plays Freshman Football. My husband and I didn't know if he had brought a t-shirt to change into after the game so we grabbed two shirts to bring with us 'just in case'. It ends up he did pack a shirt and didn't need either of them

From the director of Lovely Rivals and My Teacher, Mr. Kim, Jang Gyoo Seung, here comes Small Town Rival, a Korean drama comedy. The story is about a farmer named Cho Choon Sam (Cha Seung Won from Mr. Kim) who recently became village chief, a position of great importance…in his tiny village. Choon Sam is rather weary of his old friend Dae Gyu’s newfound success, but he reluctantly re-establishes ties in hopes of getting some public works favors for his village. The upright and good-natured Dae Gyu, however, is working on a tight budget, leading Choon Sam to be even more disgruntled and suspicious. When Dae Gyu tries to construct a nuclear waste disposal facility in the province, Choon Sam leads a demonstration to oppose the project, pushing the friends-cum-rivals into a political showdown.

Our little town is having a bit of a 'city celebration' this weekend and for the first time in two (2) years I had nothing to do with it. Ok, well, I had a little bit just before I resigned. I was trying desperately to get to get the 'new' people in charge on the right track, but then I forced myself to say "
Yesterday to celebrate Independence Day our small family attended a 4th of July parade in small town America. We found a spot along the parade route with about 10 minutes to spare. Princess was exhausted because the parade coincided with what is usually nap time, but she didn’t want to miss out on all the candy they would be giving out!
After quite a wait - things in small town America seldom start on time - we could hear the sirens of a police motorcycle in the distance. The parade had begun! Princess covered her ears as the motorcycle and its noisy siren drove past us. Then quiet descended upon the street. And I saw something amazing. It looked as if someone had started ‘The Wave’ and it was slowly making its way towards us. But once standing, people remained standing. And no one was raising their arms up in the air. Some had even put their right hand over their heart.
The residents and visitors to small town America, from seniors to toddlers, we
Big players in Indian real estate are in a look out for Greenfield mall projects in smaller cities and towns to make large killings. The list includes the prominent names of Unitech, Parsvnath, and Omaxe.
Unitech Limited has even earmarked a large amount of Rs 500 crore for a majority stake in a Greenfield retail project. The company may go in for a complete buy out in emerging metro cities such as Nagpur, Pune, and Indore. Real estate developers Omaxe and Parsvnath claim to be sitting on several proposals from local developers for such buy outs.
The construction companies have no issues regarding picking up majority or 100% stake in Greenfield mall projects in emerging cities. Indeed, it provides them with an added advantage, says Unitech managing director Sanjay Chandra.
Major developers will bring in their expertise and marketing skills to the project while facilitating easy access to capital. With the tight guidelines released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on avenues to fun
Today while driving to the local grocery store I passed a commercial lot that has started to break ground and is entering the building process. It's bittersweet for me to see them breaking ground because I was part of the process to make his dream come true of building a business there but now I am just a resident of the city and have no connection to new development. It's an odd feeling.
For the past three years Joseph has been in out town's little annual kiddie parade. Thanks to my parent's mad float building skills and Joseph's natural charm he won every parade he was in. This year Elle was on the float too. Their theme was Down on the Farm. I had to miss it because I was in LA for the transfer but after seeing thise pictures I'm not at all suprised that they won. These are some darn cute kids. Before the parade. (How skinny is my boy?)Practicing in the parking lot.During the parade. The proud winners.

i ran into a woman over the weekend with whom i used to work. she knows about the Kiddo, and always asks after him.and then came the kicker."i tell people your story all the time. i can't believe you did such a beautiful thing. so admirable, Barbara."people being polite, that's all it is. thinking they're saying the proper thing. comments like that ceased to make an impact a few years placement, when the haze lifted a little."are you and Chris planning on having kids soon?"i made the appropriate noises to fast-track this conversation."oh! that's wonderful. it will be so nice for you to have a baby of your own, won't it?"i firmly believe there is a time for education, and this was not one of them. i smiled at her, ended the conversation naturally and went on to my car, relieved to be out of earshot of this woman's perky coaching."...a baby of your own"certainly not the first time this has been said, and won't be the last. each time, though, its like stepping on a tiny sp
Today someone came into the office to chat. Since I'm leaving I'm used to people stopping in to ask about it... but then she said; "I heard Babygirl and Boyfriend broke up!"I look at her with my mouth open."How in the world did YOU hear this?""Oh, you know... small town!"She grinned. This is someone who doesn't have any connection whatsoever to my kids. Has no kids the same age, same group or even the same sports. Just one of the several hundred busybodies around town. But then her topic got on dating, and the age to allow to date and then onto MySpace. I found out that she regularly surfs all the kids MySpace pages that she can find that live in our town. She was shocked and appalled at what they 'have' on them and don't their parents check their MySpace? Don't they care?! And was really freaking out over it. She made sure to note that one particular thing she was freaking out over "wasn't on YOUR daughters page... but still! So many of the kids had it on theirs!" She
This article in the Tribune breaks down BR's strategy as "To get taken seriously, take Nevada. To take it, work the small towns and talk common sense." There aren't all that many Democrats there, so he can use his charm and intelligence to wow them while other candidates concentrate on Iowa and NH. I consider Richardson to be a VERY good campaigner...it's one of his key strengths. But whatever strategy he uses, he'll go at it whole hog, 12 hrs. a day. Might be kind of fun to watch. - Marc Coan By KATE NASH Albuquerque Tribune This is where it starts for presidential candidate Bill Richardson: a dim, red velour ballroom in the basement of the Carson Valley Inn Casino, with a plywood gray donkey and a pile of yellow "Nevada for Richardson†buttons. Minden, with a population of about 3,000, isn't Washington. It's not even Des Moines, Iowa. But this small town and others like it across this state are critical if the New Mexico governor's bid for president is
