The 2007 record I'm playing right now:It was last July that I found out just how deadly Theo Kogan - lead singer of Theo and the Skyscrapers can be. THE WORLD'S FIRST SKYSCRAPERS
Homes of the future will most likely be clustered or attached, smaller and more open due to a growing and aging population. In fact, if you take a look around the residential zones of Singapore, you'd notice this is already happening. And you can be sure we are not alone.Hence it is ironic when you realize that the people in the old walled city of Shibam, ‘the Manhattan of the desert’, already conceived the idea of building upwards some 500 years ago. Though for a different reason. They've built the world's first skyscrapers using mud-bricks (which need to be maintained regularly, even up till today, to combat erosion) on stone foundations after meticulous town planning, when the remaining available land of the city had to be reallocated with the disastrous flooding of the years 1298 (698) or 1532 (939). The consolidation of habitation upwards can truly be considered innovative at the time. The current population is a low 7000, and there is barely any traffic in sight due to the

      200 Skyscrapers Planned for Moscow
The $10-billion "Moskva-City" complex of offices, hotels, apartments, restaurants, shops and entertainment centers will have about 25 high-rises, including at least seven buildings taller than any others now existing in Europe. Dominating the site will be the 2,008-foot-tall Russia Tower, which will be one of the tallest buildings in the world and is due for completion in 2012. Most of the rest of the center is to open in 2009 and 2010. The Empire State Building, by comparison, is 1,454 feet tall, including its lightning rod. Capital officials have been working on the Moskva-City project since 1990, but few others took it seriously until the turn of the century. Now, fueled by an oil-based boom in Russia's economy, the 148-acre site is a place of frenzied construction.

Live Show Reviews: The Willowz in Cambridge! Theo and the Skyscrapers in Los Angeles! Silverchair in Boston!
We have been very, very busy at The RSL. I probably don't need to remind you yet again - but this blog is a passion and not yet a profession - so fitting in live shows and writing about it too can take some time. We have three pretty incredible recent lives show reviews to pass along today! The Willowz - T.T. the Bears - Cambridge, MA - 7.20.07 -Probably one of the best live bands I saw perform live this year... From Anaheim, California it's The Willowz. The four piece band (signed to Dim Mak records) played a damn tight live show at T.T. the Bear's in Cambridge's Central Square on July 20. They were the opener for the Detroit Cobras - but were so good, they could have been the headliners. Not only were Richie and Jessica great to talk to - they probably couldn't have done much better live. Everyone likes to talk about fusion acts. Generally these are alternative and ethnic beats or electronica with metal or rap... etc. The Willowz sound like southern rock with a touch of Led Zeppe

Exclusive Skyscrapers Set To Change Jaipur's Look
Skyline of Jaipur will soon change with the new real estate developments coming on the way on the back of new norms.  The state government has removed the ban restricting the height of a building to 30 metres.  According to the new format, the height of the buildings can be 1.5 times the width of the road running in front of the building. The new format will cater to the increasing demand for residential property in Jaipur.  So far, the city has witnessed large horizontal growth.  Since, there is a lack of open spaces in the city limits; the government has decided to increase the height of the buildings without disturbing the basic town planning, says Pratap Singh Singhavi, Rajasthan minister for urban development. The new format allows the builders to build a 15 storey building on a 100 feet connecting road,  a 22-storey building on a 120 feet road, 28 storeys on 160 feet and 40-storey building on 200-feet road. A dozen of such skyscrapers are to come in Jaipur. Construction of m

Dubai puts a new spin on skyscrapers
I would imagine that most Americans would read the article below and just shake their heads and think: Too much money and too much free time. If you were to take a bit and look at recent Dubai building projects it would be rather astonishing. The artificial palm shaped island is a good example. But it’s all in perspective. There's so much that we as Americans take as normal and everyday that in most of the world would be considered wondrous. As an example we rail about the inefficiency of the department of motor vehicles. But look at it this way. You can walk in off the street with no appointment, start the paperwork and have a legal drivers license in an hour or two at most. In many countries around the world this same process can easily take 6 months or more. And we take this for granted yet still rail about it. Eastern Europeans, especially during the cold war era, would look at everyday life in America and assume it was all propaganda. The Soviet Union regularly told its citizens

      Skyscrapers
Skyscrapers are one of the reasons that I enjoy photographing in an urban setting. There are just so many ways to compose an image with them that you could stand in one location and experiment for hours. Despite the fact that skyscrapers have easily identifiable outlines, I find that my favorite images of them are ones that are taken when I consider them in the abstract; by removing from my mind the fact that they are buildings and, instead, consider them as lines, shapes and colors. Given the number of buildings like this in any major city, there is an almost endless array of composition and images that are waiting to be made.Image taken In Downtown PittsburghCopyright Howard Grill As I mentioned in a prior post, I find it interesting that the mind set and compositional ideas I use to photograph the urban landscape are really no different than those that I find myself using to photograph nature. Before venturing out into the city with a camera, I thought they would be very d
