Can Calorie Restriction Prevent Skin Cancer?
A restricted-calorie diet was shown to inhibit the development of precancerous growths in a two-step model of epithelial skin cancer. In contrast, an obesity-inducing diet activated skin cancer pathways. Epithelial cancers, which comprise 80 percent of all cancers, are those which arise in the tissue that lines the surfaces and cavities of the body's organs, in this case the skin. Calorie restriction and obesity both directly affected activation of the cell surface receptors epidermal growth factor (EGFR) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1R). Calorie restriction inhibits their signaling, and obesity enhances it, leading to cell growth and proliferation.

Can Caffeine Cut Your Risk of Skin Cancer?
A recent study into the effects of caffeine seems to indicate that the risk of some skin cancers can be reduced by consuming moderate amounts of caffeine. The mechanism or trigger appears to involve skin cells that are in a precancerous stage due in part to overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet radiation or UV rays are a product of the sun and the specific UV rays referred to in the study were UVB rays which oscillate at a slightly slower rate than UVA rays. Both types of ultraviolet radiation make up ninety percent of the UV rays that strike the earth surface.Tanning is big business with billions of dollars spent worldwide on indoor tanning sessions, lotions, self-tanning sprays and the like. In spite of recent warnings about spending too much time in the sun, there still seems to be a very strong societal connection between having a tan and maintaining the appearance of health and youth. It is almost as though we can not help ourselves and let us be honest, the warmth of

      Know Your Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Skin cancer generally develops in the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, so a tumor is usually clearly visible. There are three major types of skin cancer -- basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Basal cell carcinomas and most squamous cell carcinomas are slow growing and highly treatable, especially if found early. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. It affects deeper layers of the skin and has the greatest potential to spread to other tissues in the body. Squamous cell carcinoma also can spread internally. It is estimated that over 1 million new cases occur annually. The annual rates of all forms of skin cancer are increasing each year, representing a growing public concern. It has also been estimated that nearly half of all Americans who live to age 65 will develop skin cancer at least once. They usually form on the head, f

We have gone over the life insurance underwriting differences of the three types of skin cancer in previous posts, but just to re-summarize, there is basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. In general one instance of basal cell or squamous cell can still get you best rates with several companies. Multiple instances can still get you better than standard rates with a few companies, but standard rates seems to be the low spot where most companies are settling. A middle of the pack stage and grade could be standard rates after 3 to 5 years. During that period the company would charge what is called a flat extra. That is a dollar cost per thousand dollars

Skin cancer and life insurance 101!
Skin cancer is probably one of the most common forms of cancer, especially here in the sunny southwest and growing up in the Rocky mountains as I did with very little between us and the sun’s uv rays. Sunscreen didn’t show up on the scene until I was in my 20’s and with sun being the cause of more than 90% of skin cancer, that puts many who grew up in uneducated and unprotected times at risk. There are three types of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and the most vicious of the three, melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common of the three and accounts for about a million new cases of skin cancer each year according the the Skin Cancer Foundation. While basal cell in fairly detectable and treatable, left undetected and untreated, “it can be resistant to treatment or locally aggressive, damaging the skin around them, and sometimes invading bone and cartilage. When not treated quickly, they can be difficult to eliminate. Fortunately

Shorts, sleeveless Ts could make you prone to skin cancer
New Delhi, June 13 (IANS) Going sleeveless and wearing shorts may seem like a good way to beat the heat, but doctors warn that overexposure to sunrays could increase chances of skin cancer. “Overexposure during the summer that is searing north India is harmful. It’s could cause not just gastroenteritis, but also increase chances of skin cancer,” cautioned Jyotsna Govil, joint secretary of the Indian Cancer Society. She said escaping rising temperatures and going to comparatively cooler cities was not really a way out. “We Delhiites go out of the capital and bask in the sun in cooler cities. But spending time boating, bathing in open ponds and rivers is not good for the skin. Sunrays reflecting from the water are even more dangerous and helps the cause of skin cancer,” Govil told IANS. The problem, she stressed, was that people don’t cover themselves properly in the summer. Added Kusum Verma, a senior consultant at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here: &l
