What Happened To The Friendly Skies?
I find it incredibly annoying to watch films from the 60s and 70s that have airplane scenes.  The flight attendants are so polite.  There seems to be so much leg room.  Hot meals are abundant.  It just looks like such a pleasurable experience. Fast-forward to now.  It's a whole new world of "complimentary" peanuts, headphones jacks that don't work, and flight attendants who sometimes don't care.  If a writer back in the day painted this picture of air travel in the new millennium, he or she would have been fired.  Yet here we stand, taking it with our hands firmly gripping our ankles.  What happened?US Airways just announced that you might have to pay up to $30 extra to get a window or an aisle seat, depending on the flight and its dur

American Airlines canceled 900 more flights today, so it could continue to inspect the way wires are bundled in wheel wells of its MD-80 fleet, reports said today. The airline canceled more than 1,000 flights yesterday, which represented close to half of all of its daily flights for a Wednesday. If you're flying American anytime soon, you might want to call ahead to find out whether your flight was one of the cancellations. This morning, on ABC Radio, Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, claimed the cancellations could be a bureaucratic message from the airlines that suits aren't happy with the way Congress is handling the airline industry's financial woes. Romney was filling in for Paul Harvey. I can't believe I'm finding myself actually agreeing with Mitt Romney.

Lower Air Fares with the Australia/US open-skies agreement?
Australia and the USA have signed an open-skies agreement, eliminating air travel limits between the two countries. The accord will now allow more US and Australian based carriers to fly on this route, increasing competition and hopefully lead to lower fares.  This agreement breaks the long-standing monopoly of the direct route enjoyed by US carrier United Airlines and Australia's Qantas. Officials who signed the agreement said, "Eliminating restrictions on US-Australia air services means lower fares, more convenient service and more opportunity for travellers, commerce and carriers to thrive," Currently an adult fare from Sydney to Los Angeles direct costs between $A2100 and $A2300. United Airlines is generally 3-8% cheaper than Qantas, but it is one of the worst airline

The Young Republic - Blue Skies
If the Thrills had actually been born in America then this is probably what they would have sounded like. As you can imagine this means that the music the Young Republic make is uniformly pretty. All 8 of them recently moved to Nashville from Boston after several years studying music so as a nicely timed mark of respect you’ll find some country dimensions to tunes like ‘Blue Skies’. In this instance you may also notice a sneaky resemblance to the Shins ‘New Slang’, which adds rather than detracts from what is an all-round knockout piece of music. ‘Blue Skies’ is lavishly crafted, the lush instrumentation so adept it never detracts from the clean shaven vocals. The song is taken from the Young Republic’s debut album ‘12 Tales From Winter City’ which is out now on End of

The Cuisine of the Friendly Skies
A couple of weeks ago, I took my last business trip of the year, a short (five day) jaunt to Sweden. The corporate travel agency booked me on an outbound flight on Lufthansa and had me returning on United, so I had an opportunity to compare their cuisine a few days apart, which is about as close to head-to-head as I would probably ever get to experience. I had flown in United Business just a few months earlier, but hadn't flown on Lufthansa since late last year, so I took the occasion to reacquaint myself with the fare on German flagship airline.I took the Monday afternoon flight from SFO to Frankfurt. After my customary nap through take-off, I spent about a half an hour fiddling around with the settings on the new Business Class seat before a flight attendant came around with napkins in hand to kick off the dinner service. To start my meal, I could have selected a pistachio crusted shrimp with mango salsa and cilantro aioli, but I instead went with the smoked duck breast with sweet

Flying the not so friendly skies
Back not too long ago I walked into the airport and past the security with a knife big enough that security personnel stopped me and measured the knife before handing it back saying that if the blade were a hair longer they’d have to arrest me. In fact, I walked through several security checkpoints with knife in my back pocket. Then came 9/11, after which my fifty-something mother, boarding a plane to come visit me, was told that she couldn’t carry a pair of finger nail clippers in her purse. And that knife? Well, I can’t even get past security at all with a boarding pass, much less carrying a knife. Now someone explain this. I do think it is related. A Southwest Airlines Co. employee pulled Ebbert off a flight this summer and forced her to adjust her outfit of a tank top, sweater and miniskirt before getting back on the plane. ‘Too sexy for Southwest’ woman in Playboy - Media- msnbc.com Apparently, Kyla Ebbert, a not too bad looking 23 year student, was refused

I've seen this video before, but it just popped up on YouTube again and I realized I've never posted it. This is Michael Landau and Steve Lukather doing the Hendrix tune "Up From The Skies". Cool stuff.

Pegasus,The Winged Horse Of The Skies
Poseidon seduced Medusa in the Athena's temple. Athena got angry for this desecration, so she cursed Medusa. She turned her hair into snakes, and all those who dare to look at her eyes would be turned into stone.Perseus, Greek hero, searched for Medusa as he needed his head to defeat the marine monster called Ceto. This monster was so strong that the only way to beat it was showing it the head of Medusa, so it will be petrified.Perseus cut the head of Medussa off. And Pegasus emerged from her spilled blood.Pegasus is depicted as a gorgeous white winged horse that rides across the sky. According to the legend, where it passed, water gushed out. This is because Pegasus is symbolic descendant of Poseidon, who is not only the God of Oceans, but also of the rivers, fountains, lakes...It was said that Pegasus lived in the mount Helicon, until the Greek hero Bellerophon went to capture him.Bellerophon needed Pegasus to carry him flying to the Olympus, where the Gods lived.Zeus realized this,

Perrin Post: Blue skies in Beijing
Boy, has Beijing changed in the nine years since I was last here. Not only are the air and streets much cleaner — thanks to the city’s effort to shape up in time for the 2008 Olympics — but the city is also much more user-friendly for travelers. More: continued here

The Fantastic Skies of Orphan Stars
Science @ NASA article link The Fantastic Skies of Orphan StarsOctober 17, 2007: What a view! It's late summer, after dark, and you're flat on your back in a sleeping bag watching the camp fire's last embers drift up to the heavens. Overhead a magnificent band of stars divides the night—it's the Milky Way.Now, imagine that scene doubled in brightness and beauty. No, that's not quite right.Imagine an entire galaxy of stars spinning overhead. The galaxy's blue-white core of young stars is surrounded by yellow octopus-arms of older siblings. Off to one side a faint red column of gas meanders away from the starry whirlpool and turns in mid-sky toward … you.Astronomers using NASA's Chandra X-ray observatory have found a place in the Universe where the view may be like that. "It's near a galaxy named ESO 137-001," says Ming Sun of Michigan State University who led the study.Above: The Milky Way above a country road in Texas. The Roundup - Friendly Skies Edition
This afternoon Eric left for a short business trip to a client site.  I hate it when he has to travel.  He doesn’t particularly enjoy it either but this trip he said is good because it will help him keep his gold status until 2009.  He called me a little bit ago and said the flight is delayed but that he got bumped up to first class.  Hopefully that will make up for the extra wait. I had my first ever guest post over at Paid Twice this week.  When you get a chance, make sure to hope on over and read my article about The Clearance Craze. Some of my favorite articles this week:  The Myth of the Parent that NEEDS to Work @ Brip Blap -  I also find it hard to believe that most families are “forced” to earn a dual income in order to make ends meet.  It is all about lifestyle choices and determining what’s most important to you.  Five Fabulous-Paying Jobs Anyone Can Do - Except They’re Totally Illegal @ Punny Money - I got a kick out of this.  Thi

Flying The Communist Skies: Air Koryo To North Korea
[Editor’s Note: I’ve never traveled to North Korea, but dearly wish to do so. As an American, the likelihood is slim, alas. I envy PRC Chinese who, following the footsteps of the presumably still incarcerated Yang Bin — the ex-flower magnate, embezzler and bankrupt of Shenyang who had planned to corner the cross border trade — flit over to Shinuiju to gamble on the crap tables installed by Stanley Ho of Macao casino fame and fortune. I long, redheaded, white-skinned Chinese speaker that I am, to turn the heads and fix the eyes of those North Koreans who’ve never seen a Westerner, as I did with PRC Chinese in the early 1980s. In essence, to turn back the calendar by thirty years and re-visit ancient Asian “communism,” still on display in its only remnant, the death defying holdout. I wonder how I would apprehend it this time around. Most likely with the same desperate sadness I did then, but who knows? I find any first-hand account of N

Early Look: JOURNEYMAN second episode “Friendly Skies’
The nice people at NBC were kind enough to send me a screener from the second episode of JOURNEYMAN entitled “Friendly Skies” which airs on Monday. It’s no secret that Journeyman is one of my favorite new shows and after watching the second episode, I can tell you that it’s still as good as the first episode if not better. Without giving anything away from the plot let me give you a few of my thoughts. The second episode picks up where we left off last week with Dan (Kevin McKidd) traveling back in time again in order to help someone new. I really enjoy the way they set up the show. It creates conflict because Dan doesn’t know when he will “leave” or when he will come back. This creates some funny situations and some not so funny ones. If you liked the pilot, you’re in for a new treat. The thing that appealed to me about the pilot is the formula, and even though this can be interpreted as a negative word, I use it here positively. Blue Skies
Blue skies, shining on me, nothing but blue skies, do I see. Here’s the thing I’ve discovered about photos. You’re never 100% happy with anything you do. I was extremely pleased with this photo when I shot it a couple months back. The back of this house looks beautiful. But….  Major fisheye distortion corrected. (The sides of the house are curving away from the middle) Converging verticals corrected. (The top of the house is smaller than its base) Sharpened. Changed the sky from blown out white to blue.  Hopefully you don’t notice anything I changed if you only get to look at the second photo though. Edit: I’m still not sure if the saturation is overdone Bookmark this article:

Advanced Russian Air Defense Missile Cannot Protect Syrian and Iranian Skies
DEBKA - The Pantsyr-S1E missiles, purchased from Russia to repel air assailants, failed to down the Israeli jets accused of penetrating northern Syrian airspace from the Mediterranean the night before. The new Pantsyr missiles therefore leave Syrian and Iranian airspace vulnerable to hostile intrusion.Western intelligence circles stress that information on Russian missile consignments to Syria or Iran is vital to any US calculation of whether to attack Iran over its nuclear program. They assume that the “absolute jamming immunity” which the Russian manufactures promised for the improved Pantsyr missiles was immobilized by superior electronic capabilities exercised by the jets before they were “forced to leave.”

      Skies Oh Skies.
Do you like this picture? Do tell! On another note, school today was mentally exhausting. I hate Thursdays, because I have to attend 4 hour lectures straight from 10-2pm! My stomach growls so loudly, so much so it’s disturbing fellow mates nearby. Ma’am Justine Burley’s lectures (EG2401) are very tiring. Well first of all,she doesn’t give a break for a 2 hour lecture. Worse still, we cannot, not even for a moment, afford to idle or sleep or talk or dig nose because she randomly calls out students to answer questions! Everyone HAS to have an opinion, and HAS to devote full attention on whatever she’s spouting. Oh and she’s Canadian. I still remember the first lecture when she introduced herself, she specifically highlighted that she’s CANADIAN, and not AMERICAN. She say’s it’s a huge difference. But yeah, it’s a fact that ALL Canadians HATE to be associated with the Americans. They absolutely HATE it if you go “Are you A

      Starry chocolate skies
Despite my many claims in this blog that I am not a chocoholic, I have to admit that I have a love of it. Of course, unlike serious chocolate fiends, I don’t dream of swimming in lakes of chocolate, nor do I pitch a fit when its unavailable, but more and more I find that I’m becoming attracted to chocolaty recipes. Which would be why, when I saw this recipe in Alice Medrich’s “Bittersweet“, my heart fluttered…just a little Unfortunately, as my family are not big chocolate fans (a block of chocolate usually lasts about 1-2 weeks in the fridge or pantry), I had to hold of making them as there would be nobody to eat them but me…not a good thing when I’m trying to be very good at the moment! However, as tonight I was to meet the girls in order to go to view a night of feminist theatre, I thought it the perfect occasion for some chocolaty decadence! That…and well, since it’s been a week since my last post, I thought I’d

The goddamn skies, my patron saint, Grisham, and social networking sites
Those darn cats and dogs are once again raining on my parade. I thought they’d eventually stop their bickering and have the decency to leave this country in peace so I could go out tonight. No such luck. If anything, they’re even more aggressive now. Oh well, what did I expect? It’s typhoon season, so I guess those goddamn cats and dogs have every right to be here. And that feisty señorita La Niña is not helping things any. So, I had to cancel my date with my constant companion and patron saint Miguel (he of the 100 calories). I now have a date with John (Grisham, that is). I’m answering his summons. In a nutshell: A sick, retired judge summons his 2 sons, Forrest and Ray. “But the family meeting does not take place. The judge dies too soon, and in doing so leaves behind a shocking secret known only to Ray. And perhaps someone else.” Ooh, intriguing, huh? Yeah, I think good old Johnny is a good enough substitute for my darling Saint Miggy. In any

      Flying the Kid-Friendly Skies
According to the Transportation Security Administration (T.S.A.), there are still a number of things you can bring with you in your carry-on, but you would never know it. What are these items and where is the current list published? I don’t think the commercial airlines do a good job publishing and distributing the T.S.A. list of prohibited items. Whether you purchased your ticket online or through an agent or over the phone — you should receive a current T.S.A. list of permitted and/or prohibited items when you receive your confirmation of ticket purchase, perhaps as a good gesture or courtesy. Most parents probably know it is a challenge to travel with children in tow, being able to pack properly should be a given. It reminds me of the mother who was forced to drink her own breast milk while passing through a JFK a few years ago. The Screener had her do this to prove that her breast milk was not a dangerous substance. At the time having her do this was well within the

      Blue Skies Turn Green
Most of us have been on at least one flight in our lives, boarding a massive jumbo jet that burns thousands of gallons of fuel to soar through the sky. What you might not know, is how quickly those jets, the companies who build them, and the companies who fly them, are changing industry standards to become more and more sustainable. Remarkable developments from Boeing began with the design of the 787 Dreamliner, a jet whose creation was based on the principles of efficiency, sustainability, and for sheer economics. The Dreamliner makes use of new technologies in carbon composites, meaning, its body is comprised of almost 50% carbon fiber (the same materials they use to make the Corvette). Why the change in material? It results in using 20% less fuel per mile than a similar plane! Airbus is also looking towards efficiency but thinking in different areas. Their newest plane, the Super Jumbo A380 (and yes, it’s big enough to deserve the name “super jumbo”) carries up to
