I looked back through my sketch book and chose three to share with you today. The first one was done today at a neighborhood park. It is a loose pen drawing of the park with the houses surrounding it.The second one was done a few weeks ago with charcoal, and a few pastels. An experiment really since I have never used dry pastels before. Turns out I shouldn't use them as they aggravate my asthma and I really don't need thatThe third one is a water soluble graphite pencil drawing. Butterfly Sketches
I thought I'd spend some more time this year working off of references.  The first sketch, to the left, was done directly from a photo in the Wetcanvas! image library.  I can see the tentativeness of the lines I made as I tried to reproduce the lines of the reference.  Part of the difficulty was that the angle of the photo wasn't directly on the wingspread, but slightly off so that the left wing should be foreshortened a bit, an aspect I didn't capture.  The second sketch to the left was an attempt to draw the same butterfly in a freer fashion. Instead it ended up distorted and child-like looking, at least to my eyes. For a third try I decided to use an aid.  I sketched out guidelines with a pencil.  First, one across the wingspan, then a perpendicular on

      After the Sketches
I have decided that this painting will be made using Winsor and Newton’s Griffin Alkyd, fast drying oil colour. I want to put these paints through their paces as I have a feeling they might tick all of my boxes. My need to work fast, layering of colour to build up body in a painting and I enjoy the solid butteryness of oil paint. I also want to find something that I can recommend to my students, who want to learn the principals of oil painting but who need to be able to take their work home, after a few days, without getting paint all over their suitcase…so here I go.After the first sketches comes the composition.I have my sketches, some blurry photographs and some notes about my feelings and thoughts at the time. Every one of these things acts as a tool towards the final painting. It

      Sketches From Liquid Arch_Identities Essay
Obviously the study of architecture isn't all about designing buildings. The pursuit of the degree expects some sort of contemplation and criticism of the space around us. I wrote an essay recently, and here is the forward:In this essay, the author explores how “borrowed authority is elusive in nature” and how “construction of historical identities is fluid”. Through the examination of selected works of Glenn Murcutt, and the contemporary revitalisation of Malagasy architecture, the author draws towards a resolution that the notion of borrowed authority is a concept that can exist within an architect’s attempt to possibly rectify the intrusion of imposed and dominating architectural languages. The author then concludes that there cannot be a finite answer for an architect when resolving past architectural impositions in an attempt to revive a native architectural vernacular and thus shows that not only is historical, but architectural identity fluid. Here are a few sketches f

      cards from watercolour sketches
towards the headland, watercolour, Vivien BlackburnI have lots of small quick paintings that were done as demo's of techniques for classes, usually added to over several sessions as I explained how to use use coloured pencils over a previous watercolour that 'didn't quite work' or showed how to use oil pastel as a resist with watercolour or splatter paint, wet in wet ..... a zillion bits of the 'language' of painting. I'd often continue working on a fragment done another week. I never do a complete painting as the students are there to paint themselves, not watch me, but I do show them how things work in small quick examples. So .... I had quite a few of these sketches doing nothing. They are only small, sometimes just a couple of inches square, sometimes 6-8 inches. I decided to make use of them by cutting them up to make some more cards for the Art Fair. I like the abstract minimalism of them.Three more cards ready to go :).... and another 3 ....... and yet another 3

      Sketches with pen and ink
I try to make the most of the time I have to spend waiting for my daughter here and there. One of my favorite ways to utilize that time is to sketch. This is 8×10, done across a two-page spread in my sketchbook with Pitt pens. Trying to capture the different foliage textures and the distances (not to mention the architecture!) is great practice. I rarely let myself sketch in pencil, even with complex subjects. There’s something about the unforgiving quality of ink that is very appealing to me. You need to really think your important lines through in advance, and make a commitment before setting pen to paper. I find I make much more of an effort to get it right on the first try when I know there’s no going back! This one is 8×5″, on a single page in the book. It is the side of the Howland Center in Beacon, NY. It seems nothing opens in Beacon until noon, so whenever I get there early, I have some time to sketch or paint.

It all starts with a brainstorm and some sketches
We are nearing the home stretch before Argus is released into closed Alpha at PostieCon. I was reflecting this morning on how far we have come over the last few months. It all started with a brainstorm that focused on what our users want: This list was daunting. We quickly came to the conclusion that the current structure of PayPerPost.com could not accommodate all of the features and functionality that we wanted to be able to eventually offer to our users. The team rallied and we decided to embark on the development of not just one new system, but nine new systems that would work together to become Argus. You have seen the core of three of those systems roll out already, the others will be processing away in background. I have been working hand in hand with the dev team creating the interface and user experience that will bring all of the data and functionality together. It all started with some sketches and information architecture: And we have been making revisions and twe

      Ink sketches
It's been over a week since I posted. Life's been hectic, mainly because it's the start of a new academic year, with it's seemingly endless number of welcome receptions, induction briefings, and dinners. The college Freshers Dinner can be slightly excruciating, but this year's bunch were fun to chat to. I just wish they would vary the menu; this was my 14th Freshers Dinner, and every year they serve chicken Kiev and profiteroles!Anyway, mainly inspired by Anita, I've got me a bottle of Noodler's red/black ink. It's a great colour. Are any others worth checking out? These are some sketches from my bedroom. Yes, OK I admit that I sometimes sketch in bed...I'm not sure whether that makes me a very keen sketcher or a very, very lazy one!

Ink and Acrylic Sketches—new art supplies and fruit from the Farmer’s Market
I love to play in my sketchbook. I’ve had so many shows lately that the pressure has been on to turn out finished pieces, but sometimes I think this is how I like to spend my time the most. It enables me to test drive ideas, relax, and enjoy the “doing” of art. The pears in the shallow bowl are ink sketches, with acrylic washes laid over while the ink was too wet. I get impatient. Below the pears are my new bottle of Sennelier Walnut Ink, and a little inkwell I got in the gift shop at Sturbridge Village. It’s made there in the pottery shop, and it works really well! The apple and pear on the facing page are from the Brewster Farmer’s Market. They are painted in Golden Fluid Acrylics, with no preliminary drawing; I just went in straight with paint—always my favorite painting method! For the pear, I experimented with the Irridescent Gold Deep, using it to mix my greens, and with ochre. The shimmer is quite subtle when combined with the other colors. W

Eight selected abstracts from the “Thousand Sketches” are currently for sale on Art Bash, a New Zealand online Gallery and art site. The selection is not so much a representation as a group that highlights my abstract explorations. It is good for me to see this small pool highlighted in this way. The editions of 25 are all in pigment ink on heavy Hahnemuhle Paper, 13 x 19 inches. They are currently available only through Art Bash (they will be briefly available at the exhibition that is coming up as well). Have a look at the selection.

      Maritime Sketches (1)
I had a bit of time this afternoon to do a couple of small sketches from the reference photos I took last week. These are nothing more than studies. As you can see, I have some work to do in figuring out how to get that lovely gray in the maritime skies!

      quick sketches of cornwall
all images copyright Vivien BlackburnThe view of the sunset over the sea from our windows was spectacular :) These are some quick sketches done from the window and the one above is trying to catch the pattern of the clouds and waves - they changed so fast and the light was going, so I didn't attempt to use colour. They are all in my moleskine sketchbook - which was only added to my art bag(s) as an afterthought because I'd planned to work larger. I made notes to myself of the colours so that if it develops into a painting I'll remember them. This one is the view from the windows looking more to the left, where the steep road hairpins round to a narrow little old bridge over the stream - the stream that comes down the valley (the Vale of Lanherne or Mawgan) past the farmhouse a couple of miles uphill, that we lived in for a year when we first moved to Cornwall. We rented half of the house and the farmer lived in the other half. It was a lovely tall Georgian farmhouse, the farm

and yet more sketches of paintbrushes
copyright Vivien Blackburnand yet more paintbrushes! a demo using, in order, pastel pencils willow charcoal and coloured pencils for a class. They are a great subject as they include all those different textures - the bristles, the wood and splatters of paint and the shiny ferrule..... and now I'm going to be off line for a week so there's going to be a lot of catching up for me to do when I get back :) Katherine tells me my icon for feedburner doesn't include the email option - so I'll sort that one out when I get back for those of you who would like to change over and avoid the ads..

      Sketches on the go
I spent the week in Vancouver on business again. I didn't have a lot of chances to go out and sketch, but I did one on the plane heading to Vancouver, and I did a quick one at the hotel looking out on the bay. Neither is that great, but then I was just having fun.

      small seascape sketches
Stormy Evening copyright Vivien BlackburnLooking through a sketch book I found these 2 unfinished works and finished them off - they are both mixed media (containing everything but the kitchen sink!).This one is earlier in the day, the clouds starting to build up.Those unfinished long seascapes on canvas are still sitting waiting to be finished off but I've been busy with other non-painting stuff :( .

      Quick Sketches
Today is starting off as a slow and comfortable Saturday. I didn't feel like making any grandiose paintings this morning, but I wanted to play with colours again and I decided to do a couple of sketches for fun.Someone emailed me last week to say that my work looked like kindergarten stuff, ah well, I guess these two will prove him/her right. I personally love to paint loose like this. It gives me so much pleasure to strike with my brush and discover what got done. In Lebanon, where I was born, ladies used to invert their Turkish coffee cups and let the coffee grains dry on the sides. They would then flip the cups over and read each other's fortune from the dried patterns that where deposited. This kind of painting reminds me of that lovely tradition.

      Nicole's Court Sketches
continued belowSomeone needs to sack this fucking court sketch person. These things are shiteous! That doesn't look anything like Nicole Richie. And the other one doesn't look a thing like Joel Madden either. This must be a mistake - maybe the artist mixed up the sketches or something and gave us someone else's drawings. Like... a fat middle aged woman's drawings. But, we all know Nicole is the hottest, so who gives a damn what the sketch person thinks.I fucking really do need to fucking stop swearing on here. Fuck.

Jeff Buckley - Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk [Extra tracks]
DISC 2We'll never know for sure what artistic heights Jeff Buckley might have gone on to reach, since he was taken from us soobscenely early, with only time enough to complete one album and begin work on a second. With the help of SKETCHES, though, we can make some educated guesses. This double-disc, lovingly assembled by Buckley's friends, colleagues and family, gathers together both his studio efforts and home 4-track demos for the album he was trying to complete up until his tragic drowning. The studio sessions, produced by Tom Verlaine, find Buckley downplaying his phenomenal vocal abilities somewhat, in favour of focusing on the songs, from the Zeppelinisms of "The Sky Is A Landfill" to the undoubtedly Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan-influenced "New Year's Prayer" and the beautiful, ethereal "You & I". The home demos show Buckley's more experimental, playful side, an aspect of his music presumably encouraged by his pals/heroes The Grifters, whose lo-fimasterpieces inspired Buckley to

Flo Dirt Reviews: "The Best of Chappelle’s Show Uncensored – Top 25 Sketches"
Flo Dirt back atcha. Yo, I had the tremendous honor of being allowed to “review” The Best of Chappelle’s Show Uncensored Top 25 Sketches. I put quotes around the word review because asking me to review this DVD is like asking me if Dr. Dre makes dope beats. It’s like asking me if I still miss Pac. It’s like asking me if I love my daughter more than anything in this world. These are all no-brainers. I mean, come on… It’s Chappelle’s Show! You’re talking about by far the funniest and hardest-limit-pushing series of our generation and those to come. This was just me watching what I’d watch anyway. This wasn’t work by any stretch of the imagination. That’s real. But let’s get into it, shall we? I own the first season on DVD, like most of America. I’m the type of dude that wants to put money in the pockets of true artists. Dave Chappelle is so incredibly smart and forward-thinking, and all the other amazing things that have been said about him since his comedic de

      Sorynefah Sketches
Sorynefah is a novel I’ve recently gone back to, the last couple of days actualy while I’ve been layed up with food poisoning. It’s been nothing more than a jumble of ideas and characters for quite a long time now, just waiting to fall into place. At last it’s getting there…. These are a few sketches taken from some of my sketch books. All the sketches here are either from Sorynefah, or at least related to it. A few have been developed further, and have back stories and personalities, but like I say…just a lot of ideas. I tend to work in one of two ways when writing/illustrating a book (one of my own). With things like Jonny Moor (out later this year), I know exactly what I’m going for before I start. I have the writing, the illustrations, the layout, even the covers and blurb clearly set out in my head. When that’s the case the stuff just flows, it feels easy. I like that, in a way, because I can come up with an idea, and get it all d

      Sketches from Tatton Park
Last Saturday [see footnote], I sketched at Tatton Park - these are views of the rear of the recently restored Japanese garden and the view of the park from the Italian gardens just in front of the house. Tatton was one of those places I used to go when I was young - a special treat was rolling down the terraced lawns - the terraces were just wide enought to allow some speed to be generated and

      Nose, eye and mouth sketches
It is really nice to come across sketches that I had done awhile ago during my time that I was studying a Commercial Art Course. These little studies are very helpful to get ones head around the shapes and size to indicate if the person is a child or an adult.Well it is a short post as there has been a lot of coming and going in my household over the last few days although did manage to get some work done in my studio today. Until next time....happy blogging!Quick links:Free Subscription to Arts & Stuff by Email technorati tags: sketch, sketching, drawing, nose studies, eye studies, mouth studiesArts & Stuff with Susan Borgas SnapShots
