How To Hire A Pet Sitter
Leaving your dog or cat at home for extended periods of time while you're traveling can be trying for both you and your pet. You don't want to inconvenience your friends or family members by asking them to care for your pet while you're gone. You could board her at the vet, but that is also stressful for her. And you worry about the exposure to the other animals that are sick. An in-home pet sitter seems like the perfect solution. However, you may not know how to go about finding one.A good place to start looking for a sitter is the International Locator on the Pet Sitters International website. If you submit your zip code (or your country if you live outside of the US), you will get a list of pet care providers in your area. You can also specify the kind of pet you need care for and the t

      I'm No Baby Sitter
I just now heard a man say "Yeah, I did a lot of baby sitting last Saturday..."I thought to myself, "So.... you were watching someone else's children and getting paid for it?"No.This is not what he was doing. He was caring for and engaging his own kids on Saturday.See, if you're a teenager looking to make a few bucks on a weeknight watching some kids while their parents are out, then you're baby-sitting.You do not baby-sit your own kids, men. You are as much a parent to them as mom is. Or, if you believe you're not, then you should be. Don't leave them high and dry, dad. They're yours. And it's a privilege.Be grateful for the time you get.

Sure, you got it 40% off because you read Stiletto Jungle every day (hint, hint), but it still cost the better part of your entire monthly clothing budget. You are ready for your cold cocktail and free nachos. One problem: where do you put your purse?Your options are limited. Do you carry it with you, slung over your shoulder for the next three hours? Do you sit it right in the middle of the table like the prissy girl you pretend not to be? Do you sit your new handbag acquisition on the sticky floor? Nope. None of this is going to work. It's time for a new option. Pet sitter scams
I can’t even begin to count the number of pet scam emails I get every week from people wanting a pet sitter or dog walker to care for their pet while they travel internationally. Of course they get deleted right away because I’ve seen so many of them. Many pet sitters who have been around long for a while, and have been online long enough, can spot them a mile away. Some of the newer people who are working hard to get their pet sitting or dog walking business off the ground may not realize they’re scams though. Or, as is obvious with some, they are simply so eager to get a new client, they convince themselves ‘this one’ just may be OK. Here’s one I just got…twice today… Dear sir, I need Dog Sitter for my dog (Dolap). Blix: The German Shepherd Kitty-Sitter
Blix, my mom's German Shepherd, wandered up to our front yard in Florida, near the end of 2002 (or possibly early 2003). He was skinny and hungry and had obviously been abandoned. Of course, we took him in. At the time, Hans Blix was in the news left and right regarding nuclear inspections in Iraq and the fact that he was finding no signs whatsoever of WMDs, despite the Bush Administration's insistance that they were there. We named the dog after him. My mom's house is set up such that the three dogs (she also has a chow and a black lab, also both rescued strays) live in the fenced in back yard, while the cats live in the front yard and/or the house. Recently Blix has decided that he would much rather live with the cats than with his fellow canines, and has learned how to hop the fence. Now he spends most of his time hanging out in the front yard, baby sitting the kitties. He especially enjoys playing with the two kittens, Pewter and Silver.Meanwhile, my mom looks on from her new fr

Kritter Sitter gives pets more than just cuddles
Sandy Daens, owner of Kritter Sitter in Pleasant View, TN, is a woman I know from a pet sitter email list that we’ve both been on for years. I didn’t realize it until I read the article but she and I started our pet sitting businesses at just about the same time - around 9/11 - not exactly the best time to start a new pet sitting business! Anyway, from what I’ve seen through conversations on the email list, Sandy seems to be extremely intent on providing the absolute best care possible to the pets she is entrusted with. So, if you’re in her area, give her a call if you need pet care. Sandy also helped me out a bit during the frenzy early on in the pet food recall. (Thank you, Sandy!) Update: Sandy asked me to let people know she’s in Pleasant View, not Cedar Hill as the article states. From the Ashland City Times… The need for reliable pet care while traveling prompted Cedar Hill resident Sandy Daens to start her business, Kritter Sitter. “We ope

      The “Professional” Pet Sitter
As pet sitting gains in popularity so do the number of people wanting to jump on the bandwagon and put a “pet sitter for hire” shingle out. Every day it seems there are new pet sitters coming out of the woodwork to give pet owners “the best pet sitting service” ever. What saddens me is that many of these people are just in it because they think it will be a fun job, and an easy way to make money. Unfortunately for them, and for their clients, they do not take the time to learn about the responsibility that comes along with the job. The truth of the matter is that pet sitting can be a tough, tiring, very involved business. Sure, pet sitters get to hang with pets and have a good time, but there’s a heck of a lot more to it than that. Professional pet sitters vs. hobby pet sitters Pet sitters who contract to care for a client’s pets and home when they’re gone are responsible for the health and welfare of that pet’s life. They are the one who

Trials & Tribulations of Hiring a Sitter
The time had come for us to finally break down and hire a sitter. Snuggle Bug is 2 years and 4 months old and, up until now, he'd never been watched by anyone other than family or very close friends who have children of their own (not to mention that he's a stay-at-home kid). We've been spoiled in that respect, absolutely trusting those who have watched Snuggle Bug and not having to pay any money. The Motivating FactorWhen we signed up for the 10 weeks of PS-MAPP classes that we have to attend each Thursday night from 6-9 p.m., we realized that it would be a tough sell to get a family member or close friend to make that huge of a time commitment for us. So we started asking around to find Snuggle Bug's first babysitter. The ChoiceI didn't realize it'd be so hard to find someone that comes highly recommended and that is available on a consistent basis. We were striking out right and left, until some dear friends of ours mentioned that they had a cousin who was really good with kids
