Yesterday, shareholders of both Sirius and XM Radio approved the proposed $5 billion sale of XM Radio to Sirius. I have reported on the merger news in the past, but yesterday the shareholders voted. The proposed merger still needs the OK from the FCC and the Department of Justice. As an XM-radio subscriber, I still think it is a bad idea, but I may be in the minority on this. What are your thoughts on the proposed merger? Feel free to post a comment. See my previous posts: Satellite Radio to Offer Different Plan Options, XM+Sirius Merger Thoughts from ZDNet, Sirius and XM To Merge.
Shareholders approved a deal Tuesday to allow Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. to acquire its rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. for about $5 billion, but the largest hurdle has yet to come regulatory approval in Washington.Shareholders of Sirius and XM had been widely expected to approve the deal, which would allow the companies to save costs on programming, acquiring subscribers and broadcasting. Shareholder advisory firms had already endorsed the deal.More difficult will be getting the deal approved in Washington, where the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission must both give their blessing. Several consumer groups have opposed the combination, saying it would create a monopoly that could hurt consumers.

By: David Johnson If you haven't yet heard of Sirius satellite radio, it is the latest technology in radio broadcasting and it is completely changing the way that we listen to radio. Rather than the radio signal being sent directly from the broadcasting station to the listeners, the signal is sent to a satellite positioned in stationary orbit in space above the earth and the signal can then be sent to far more people this way. It is paid for radio programming, so you get no commercials on it and also this means that there are no sponsors that the broadcasters have to appease. There is also no government censorship either, so the talk radio programming can be very provocative. A few weeks ago I wrote an article about the new Hockey Night in Canada radio show that is only available on Sirius satellite radio with a paid subscription.
While certain that there was a perfectly logical rationale that fit within the whole concept of a taxpayer funded public broadcaster, lacking any real knowledge of the business or of government regulations guiding the CBC’s operation, I was unable to articulate the details.
I sent an e-mail to the CBC requesting an explanation. The response was a while in coming but when it finally arrived it was in-depth and informative.
Senior Director of CBC Sports, David Masse, outlined the relationship with Sirius (a company that the CBC owns shares in) and the model that is used to produce shows like HNIC and numerous others. The question that I was most interested in regarding the funding and production of such broadcasts was addressed thusly:

Sirius Satellite Radio is set to launch an all-Grateful Dead channel on Sept 7th. The initial launch will showcase an exclusive recording of the July 21, 1974 concert at the Hollywood Bowl, with a show hosted by Bob Weir, a founding member of the Dead, to follow. Additional programming for the channel includes rare interviews with Jerry Garcia, unreleased recordings and original hosting content from other Dead members.Sirius must ensure to fans the channel will feature a good proportion of rare, exclusive content, a feat that doesn't come easy, considering the free-taping of shows and the stewing of shared content over the years. Sirius however considers the effort worthwhile since the Dead garners a fan-base defined by loyalty. I've witnessed the loyalty of those fans at work here on this site, after writing one quick blurb about Starbuck's upcoming, exclusive release of the Dead's compilation, "Eternally Grateful". So what’s the deal with the bikinis? I’ve never seen these totally strapless bikinis before, is this a new thing? A Vegas / West Coast thing? They don’t seem too practical… I can’t see someone going into the ocean with these bikinis on. What do you think about them? Trend or Flop?
The XM and Sirius merger has a lot of people nervous. Whichever side you currently are a subscriber with, you most likely have your favorite stations — losing some or all of them would not be good. I have been a Sirius subscriber for years (way before Howard Stern) and have my favorites and would hate to lose them.
The latest news-rumor about the XM-Sirius merger has some good news, it looks like you will be able to get a low cost $6.99 package that will get you 50 channels or a $16.99 deal that would give you channels from both XM and Sirius. You will also be able to add and remove channels as you desire. Sounds like a good deal to me, I love Sirius but I listen to just about five channels, it would be nice to be able to get somewhat of an a-la-carte offering.
