You may have seen them on t-shirts...or in the lobby of Yahoo! HQ in Sunnyvale. These, my friends, are the shoes off of David Filo's feet. While I will be conducting an interview with Filo sometime in the next few days, if luck is on my side these might be in my possession before the post is up.
How, you ask? Today is a great event at Yahoo! called the "Free is Good Fair", where Yahoo! is working with Freecycle to have employees bring in stuff they don't want or need, and in turn they can take stuff they want from what has been brought in by others. Think of it as Craigslist without money...or "one man's junk is another man's treasure".
I brought in several things, including sneakers and some snazzy soccer cleats--all in great shape. My guess is that you too have some sneakers y

“An innovative book for an innovative topic.” Charles Hampden-Turner
Like the subject matter it covers, Clusters of Creativity is innovative and original. It breaks with popular interpretations of Silicon Valley and similar regions, which range from the hyperbolically laudatory to the contemptuously dismissive, and takes a critical, objective look at the lessons that these locations [...]
By Ken McLaughlinMercury NewsArticle Launched: 04/24/2008 02:19:23 AM PDTAt the Asian supermarket 99 Ranch, the price of jasmine rice has already doubled this year. Across the street, Costco is rationing its 50-pound bags of discounted rice - if you can get them at all. And some Asian restaurants are even reconsidering their longstanding policy of refilling rice bowls for free. The worldwide rice shortage has come to Silicon Valley."There is no rice," said Rita Patel of San Jose, a native of India who couldn't find any at Costco on Hostetter Road in northeast San Jose on Tuesday night. In a valley where nearly 30 percent of residents are of Asian descent, people are increasingly frustrated by the soaring cost of the staple of Asian cuisine. Economists blame the price increases on everything

One key to driving healthier economies in the countries of Eastern Europe, particularly in the former Soviet republics, could be significant investments in Web 2.0 development. Could Eastern Europe foster its own Silicon Valley? The Soviet Union had its own technology capital once, though you might be surprised to learn it wasn't located in the Russian Federation."Belarus was regarded as the 'Silicon Valley' of the former Soviet Union, manufacturing over 50 percent of the computers and components in the former USSR." said Sergei A. For the last seven years, ever since the 2001 dot-com bust, Silicon Valley is a very skittish market. Investors keep an eagles eye on every small movement which could herald a new drubbing for the tech companies. There's been a lot written about the various factors which impact tech bottomlines and signs of another bubble building up. As this report on the relation between innovation and job

The good part is that while Europe is working hard in the web 2.0 space, the Aussies have taken the concept and have developed an incubator service much like the Americans have with Angel and VC funding of companies. The LLC in place, Internet Property development Group, has been funding groups and sites, with their first release this month.
On that news we were really excited about it because the USA, Asia and Europe are working very hard on web 2.0, and coming up with some great stuff. In reading the PR flash below, we thought it would be way too cool.
New Web 2.0 Internet Incubator, Internet Property Development Group LLC (IPDG), launches in Silicon Valley with backing from Australian listed company Photon LTD (ASX:PGA), with goal of launching new web 2.0 consumer innovations from around the world in to the US market. Toyota's Prius hybrid has become the bestselling car in Silicon Valley. That must be because of the high concentration of smart people living and working there. They are probably more aware of the dire consequences of global warming. At 94,503 sales, the Prius represents just 1 percent of U.S. car and truck sales so far this year. In Santa Clara County, Prius registrations represent 5.3 percent of the market. The best selling car in Sweden (where I come from) is Volvo V70. It emits more than twice as much CO2 than a hybrid.

Interesting. via TechCrunch - Silicon Valley Could Use A Downturn Right About Now"When I look back at the pictures from those early events, I remember good times, and no one was talking about twenty million dollar venture rounds or selling out for a cool $1.65 billion. Companies like Meebo and Sphere literally launched in my living room in front of a couple of hundred genuinely interested people.Somewhere in there the money started rolling in. Our first dime of revenue was December 2005. A few months later a lot of companies were raising $3 million A rounds, then $7 million A rounds after the YouTube acquisition. Companies started to hire marketing managers and PR firms, and spending tens of thousands of dollars on launch parties. Now, a year after the madness started, it’s even worse. Companies have to actively dodge venture capitalists to avoid raising a big round of financing.Times are good, money is flowing, and Silicon Valley sucks.I don’t know what it is, but the same thing h

Silicon Valley Moms Blog is a collaborative group of moms writing about their lives in Silicon Valley, Calif., where moms are CEOs at work and CFOs (Chief Family Officer) at home, houses are expensive, rain past April is a crisis, two-year-olds love sushi, six-year-olds have web businesses, and moms are too busy chauffeuring their kids in their minivans (which they really wish were Priuses) to raise a sword in the mommywars.Perhaps that's why it's so refreshing to read the longish slice-of-life posts that dominate the archives of Silicon Valley Moms. The women are smart, sincere (often sincerely hilarious), and by sharing their lives and their struggles they remind everyone that being a mom, even in the shadow of the Googleplex, doesn't mean having to stop having an identity. They recently recapped their first six months for your perusing pleasure, offering a great roundup of the blog's "topic days," which every so often bring the women together to touch on specific subjects, inclu
We repeat: the Toyota Prius is the official car of the intellectually superior. According to InsideBayArea.com, after trailing Camry, Corolla, Accord, and Civic in Santa Clara County in California's Silicon Valley last year, Prius has outsold all four through May of this year. Ron Diridon, executive director of the Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University and himself a Prius militant owner, shows no lack of hubris in his assessment of the situation: "The intellectual capacity within Silicon Valley is amazing. That higher level of education reflects a higher level of understanding of the terrible consequences of global warming." Intellectual superiority aside, the free pass to the carpool lane that was available for Prius drivers, the outrageous price of gas in California and the fact you can now buy a Prius for less than sticker had a bit to do with it as well.
