Sigur Ros have recently released a brand new 2 disc DVD and it is nothing short of amazing. I got a chance to take in the 97 minute documentary this weekend and found it to be better than I expected. First off, to say this is a documentary may be a bit misleading, the band is interviewed throughout the film, but it does not get into much detail with them, and the music really plays center stage here. I was a bit surprised that the band and all the member of Amiina, who are also interviewed throughout, do all of their interviews in English, despite a few of them being a bit less than fluent. I was expecting loads of subtitles, and outside of one quick scene, I don’t think there are any. I should note, for those unfamiliar, that Heima translates as "home" and "homeland" and if follows a series of free concerts Sigur Ros played in their native Iceland over the course of summer 2006. There is a huge set of anticipated releases coming up for Sigur Rós and it's creating quite a confusion in my head. I want to keep track cause I love these guys, so here's my attempt at updating you! A double compilation with previously unreleased tracks will be coming out on the 6th, called Hvarf-Heim, which includes regular and acoustic studio versons. On the 20th, the Iceland tour DVD, Heima, will be released. To help you get excited for the Hvarf-Heim , a single was released on monday called Hljómalind, which used to be Rokklagið. Pitchfork reports that the 4 piece have just signed a new deal here in the US to release their upcoming new album and DVD, though not together. Sigur Ros have signed to XL Recordings to release the double CD Hvarf / Heim. While not all new material, this is obviously exciting news for fans of the band. Also, SR will be dropping a concert DVD, titled Heima, which documents a series of concerts from the summer of 2006 in Iceland. Both will be released on November 6th here in the states. Are Iceland’s Sigur Rós the saviors of 21st-century rock or true heirs to the silk-robed-and-platform-booted, pompous progressive rock of the '70s?
