Oh My... How Do you Get Stuck in a Sidewalk? LOL.
When this man accidentally dropped his cigarette lighter down a hole in a pavement he made the ill-advised decision to try and retrieve it – with his feet. It was a choice he lived to regret. Having misjudged the diameter of the 18 inch hole, which workmen had dug to fix in a lamppost, he became wedged in it up to his armpits. A crowd of more than 100 people gathered around to watch as he

Sidewalk repair in progress in Klong Toey
A Bangkok sidewalk repair work is in progress as cement is laid to patch up broken tiles and manholes. The pavement is entirely sandy and a bit wet from last night's heavy rain, which left many worms & centipedes homeless and forced evacuation of some of Bangkok's elite frogs.

Gambas Al Ajillo & Sidewalk Paint
George, the Kitchen Goddess posted a fabulous prawn pil-pil tapas recipe the other day and it got me thinking about a lower fat version. I've been trying to cut down on carbs lately and this is a perfect low carb treat. I came up with this variation of Gambas Al Ajillo, the traditional Spanish tapas. This makes one portion, so multiply as necessary. It reminds me of sitting in rustic town squares in Spain last summer, sipping Sangria and munching on tapas. Heaven. To cut down on fat you could always use the ingredients as a marinade instead and grill them. A quick, healthy and easy summery recipe!Calories: 169 Fat: 10g Carbs: 6g Protein: 14gIngredients:8 medium raw prawns, shelled2 cloves garlic, finely chopped1/4 - 1/2 tsp chili flakes 2 tsp olive oil Splash of sherry or sherry vi

      Homemade Sidewalk Paint
Yesterday was a beautiful day. Belle never likes to play outside, but Tank can hardly be kept indoors in the worst of weather. A few weeks ago I can across a recipe for sidewalk paint and decided to test it out and kick the kids out in the yard for the day.It took me under a minute, from start to finish to make the paint. Three ingredients! One of which is water! My kids happily played for a couple of hours until Tank picked it up and dumped it all out. My one concern with the final product was that it looked watery until the paint dried. Once dry you could clearly see the design, but with little kids, it took awhile before they figured that out.To make your own sidewalk paint you need:1/4 cup corn starch1/4 cup of cold watera couple drops of food coloringMix it all together, send your kid

Catwalk to the Sidewalk: Proenza Schouler Safari Look
The Proenza Schouler sping 2008 collection for was all about the Safari look. The collection was filled with military inspired jackets and vests in neutral and muted colors. It was all about layering vests in different shades and accessories. The masculine collection was balanced by the full 'ice skating' skirts. Models' outfits were completed with belts, platforms and patent pumps. I loved the entire collection; however, my favorite look was this neutral ensemble. The look is so simple and versatile. You can change the look from dressy to casual by switching the pumps for brown gladiators flats that are all the rage this season and adding a few accessories. Remember to have fun with the safari-esque look. You don't have to go overboard with it. If you don't like the neutral colors, switc

Weekend in Review: Greek Festival, Bham Sidewalk Film Festival
Friday Night, Leslie and I went to the Birmingham Greek Festival. We heard some Greek music, looked in the Orthodox Church. The gyro and vegetable plate was good and served with a nice ‘opa!’ But it was a lot of people in a little area and then forklifts came in the crowded areas. Saturday and Sunday we attended the Film Festival. Which was even better than last years. Last year was hard to beat, but this year did it handily. We got to see. Darius Goes West - This could be the best documentary of the festival. The story follows Darius Weems from Athens, Georgia. He has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which will kill him. He has never left his small town. His friends take him across the country to raise awareness of DMS and to get MTV to pimp his Wheelchair. This is an organic, well constructed film that gives hope where there seems to be none. (A+, Find out how you can see this movie, Documentary) The Devil Came on Horseback - This film was about Darfur, but even more it was

      Lingering Sidewalk Snacks
Saigon has its own snacks which are favorites of students. These childhood food favorites often last with Saigonese throughout their lifetime.Last week, during our chat about the best foods in town, one of my colleagues asserted, “No places in HCM City offer foods better than sidewalk food stalls do.”This 52-year-old gentleman is widely respected in the office for his straighforwardness and pointed remarks. Therefore, although he is not a native of Saigon, his comments gave me some careful thoughts.I think he may be right, at least when it comes to Saigonese snacks.Like other places around the globe, the city has its own snacks. Some of them actually originated from elsewhere, but they have been all localized to fit the local taste.Take bò bía, spring roll of chopped jicama, carrot and small fried shrimp served with bean dipping sauce. This snack is a particular favorite of schoolgirls. Yet many ladies still keep this school-age preference. Or gi khô bò, green papaya salad with

      SIDEWALK SALE
A local antique store holds a truck load sale every two weeks. Store employees unload the truck, filling a small wagon with seven or eight boxes of goodies at a time. The boxes are lined up along the storefront. Nothing is priced. The boxes are full of all kinds of vintage items. Linens. Books. Glassware. Pottery. Tools. Radio tubes. Customers are not allowed to touch anything in the wagon, and they cannot dig through the boxes, until the last box is set down. When the wagon is completely unloaded, all hell breaks loose. Arms flail, hips bump and grind, feet stomp and get stomped as customers claw their way through the feeding frenzy. If two hands grab the same item, it's a tug of war, with the plunder generally going to the beefier picker. The store's owners supply coffee, doughnuts, and band aids.Last Friday, the crowd was particularly worked up. I saw an older woman pick up a medium sized box full of table linen. She fought her way out of the crowd so she could go through the trea

This morning, I avoided the blueberry muffin devil and purchased an angelic apple.
