Sick leave 'link to early death'
People who have long spells of sick leave for psychiatric reasons are twice as likely to die from cancer as healthier employees, research suggests. The "unexpected" finding could help pick out at-risk groups, the University College London researchers reported in the British Medical Journal. More... BBC © MMVIII

Even California thinks paid sick leave is a bad idea
California is uniformly thought of as the most liberal employment law state. It is often the test ground for new employment laws and theories. Yet, paid sick leave could not even make the grade in the Sunshine Golden State. According to the Angeles Times, California's paid sick leave measure died in its legislature: A state bill to guarantee paid days off for sick workers died Thursday amid op

New Jersey to adopt paid sick leave - is Ohio next?
While the Ohio Healthy Families Act stalls in the legislature, and Sick Days Ohio, the group lobbying for this bill, gathers signatures to place in on November's ballot, New Jersey will join California and Washington to become the 3rd state (plus the District of Columbia and San Francisco) to require paid sick leave for employees. The New Jersey plan, however, differs from Ohio's Healthy Families Act in three key regards: New Jersey's employees will partially fund their own paid leave through a payroll deduction. According to today's Philadelphia Inquirer, each worker will pay about $33 per year, while each is entitled to collect up to two-thirds of their salary, capped at $524 per week. Employers will be able to require their employees to use accrued vacation days and other paid time

      Sick Leave
Went to the doc yesterday after a few scary dizzy spells, and holy baloney, no wonder I feel so wretched. Sinus infection. Bladder infection. Anemia. I’m eating Keflex and iron pills, and I’m taking advantage of all the pity and laying on the couch like a pregnant spud. See ya next week sometime. PS - Shaggy woke up yesterday, doing [...]

      I'm On Sick Leave
God Bless You! Well, I didn't get a chance to help my Grammy with any more blog posts this past week because I got sick with a cold. I was sneezing and coughing a lot. Mommy said that I felt a little warm and had something called a "fever" so, she decided not to send me to day care on Thursday and Friday. I really missed Ms. Bea, Nyeisha, and all my friends but Mommy said that I might make them sick too so, I had to stay at home. She stayed home (and didn't go to work) so she could take care of me and did all kinds of things to help me feel better. We even wrapped up in our blankee and watched "Thomas & Friends" together for hours!Click logo to enter!

      Sick Leave
(A week ago) Friday night, Bug had cold-like symptoms. Saturday night, her fever and throat pain were pushing straight through my efforts. I wasn't expecting her to be admitted when I took her to the ER, but within a couple of hours, she was being processed. She had a bad case of strep throat and a white count well above her doctor's level of comfort. Bird and I spent three nights camped out in

      Sick Leave and Chronic Absenteeism
I recently came across a study that caught my interest. Have you ever wondered how many of employees who call in sick are actually ill? A 2003 study by Harris Interactive found that only 36% who claim to be sick are sick. Not only is this figure disturbing, the trend is disquieting. It seems that back in 1995 45% of those taking sick leave were sick; we have lost 9 % in 8 years. A summary of the full study is available at www.cch.com in an article titled Unscheduled Absence Survey. The actual data on the reasons given for using sick leave, as provided by Harris Interactive: 36% Sick 11% Stress 13% Entitled to their sick leave 18% Personal matters 22% Family Matters 100% The study also viewed the data from the standpoint of companies with very good morale (12%) and good morale (44%), fair morale (34%) and poor morale (10%). As you might guess, morale did have a marked impact on absenteeism. Companies with very good/good morale had an overall absenteeism ra
