Data from Columbia disk drives survived the shuttle accident
AP - Jon Edwards often manages what appears impossible. He has recovered precious data from computers wrecked in floods and fires and dumped in lakes. Now Edwards may have set a new standard: He found information on a melted disk drive that fell from the sky when space shuttle Columbia disintegrated in 2003.

MORE THAN READY : The Shuttle Stallion Concept
More Than Ready (Team Valor) One undoubted benefit of the shuttle stallion concept is that a stallion can be seen in a new light by breeders in one hemisphere, thanks to his achievements in the other. There's arguably no better example of this than the great Danehill, who was once on the brink of becoming just another stallion on Coolmore's star-packed Irish roster. In 1994, in his fifth season, Danehill's fee was a mere IR9,000gns, which placed him only 10th in the pecking order among Coolmore's Irish stallions. Although he started to flourish with his northern hemisphere runners in 1995, the Coolmore team was prepared to lease him to Japan for the 1996 season, which suggests he still wasn't considered vital to the operation's success.Click here to watch video of Danehill winning the Co

Buran Space Shuttle Floats Along the Rhine [Space Fleet]
The Buran space shuttle was once the apple of the Soviet space fleet's eye. Unfortunately, it has now been reduced to floating peacefully down the river Rhine, where it will eventually come to rest at the Technik Museum Speyer in Mannheim, Germany. The great shuttle took to the skies only once during an unmanned test flight, but two decades later, the modern relic has gone the way of a crushed Buzz Lightyear—it's realized it can't fly, but at least it can put on one hell of an exhibition. Good on you, Buran. The images of the final float look stunning, and the video of the event, which is set against some seriously melancholic music, makes the whole event look like a sad and dignified funeral procession. Check out the pictures in the gallery below, then jump in to see the clip. Warni

Russian space shuttle won’t fly in Germany, either
So they shipped it up the Rhine at 5 miles an hour where it just spent the night in Cologne. The Soviet Russian Buran orbiter, which never orbited, designed to plant Cold War cold space mines among other things, is being put to rest at Germany’s Speyer Technical Museum, of all places. Business-savvy museum technocrats figure that Buran will be better off drawing admission fees here than gathering dust in some long forgotten Russian warehouse somewhere. And I’m sure that they’re right. I am a bit surprised at all of the sudden space race curiosity here in Germany, however. The Germans have always been a bit sceptical when it comes to space exploration and space racing and space militarization. And I don’t blame them, either. After all, they invented it. Shuttle's KPC ready for prime time, starts at $299 for a ready-made unitIt sounds like Shuttle was being a little optimistic in January when it promised a $99 barebones PC and a $199 version with a full complement of internals and a Linux OS. That said, the KPC is still a decent deal, with the K45 barebones kit including quite a bit to be getting on with for $199, and the K4500 pre-configured system offering an Intel Celeron 430 processor, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB HDD and Foresight Linux pre-installed. Other perks that are present even in the barebones kit include Intel GMA 950 graphics, gigabit Ethernet, 5.1 audio, WiFi and a decent bit of room to grow. Newegg should start selling the K45 this weekend, while Shuttle will be selling a user configurable K4500 soon.(Via Engadget.)

Maybe it's because I grew up with America's space program--I vividly remember the first space shuttle launch then later sitting in English class glued to the television watching the Challenger explode. So regardless of their whines Andrew and I dragged our less-enthusiastic children over to Cape Canaveral (or as we lovingly refer to it, Cape Evel Canaveral--an hour in the car can be a LONG time with four children and we get our kicks wher

When did shuttle launches become so news-unworthy?
It's too bad that the space shuttle program has become old news. In regards to the current Atlantis mission, Traci Watson of USA Today wrote, "The successful launch meant that a European scientific laboratory that has been waiting on Earth since 2002 finally reached space, where it will be attached Sunday to the International Space Station. It will be the first room of the station that isn't owned by Russia or the United States. Operated by the European Space Agency, it gives European nations their first chance to control a human spacecraft."As the space shuttle Atlantis lifted off on Thursday afternoon headed toward the International Space Station, it reached a mind-boggling speed of 14,000 miles per hour. Space Shuttle Launch Videos NASCAR is fun. Fighter jets are cool. But when it comes to engines, power, and feel-it-in-your-bones rocket propulsion, nothing compares to the spectacle of a space shuttle lift-off. This YouTube collection of NASA and amateur clips takes you to the launch pad and beyond. Witness Discovery's rare nighttime ascent to orbit. See the earth fall away as Atlantis spirals upward. Watch Endeavor, "flying straight as an arrow," move out from beneath its solid-rocket boosters. Ain't space technology grand? The brief video segments veer between far-off shots highlighting the full rush and flick of the booster engines' flames and shuttle eye-views from cameras mounted on external tanks. We also love the authoritative NASA voice-overs. There's something so enthralling about hearing them intone, "T-minus two minutes and counting." And every once in awhile, you catch an orator saying something like, "everything looking good on the bird." Does it ever!

      Shuttle Launch, Anyone?
I have so many odd things to blog about these days, from the letter we received from NASA last month to the exceedingly random screen saver Dr. V. inadvertently installed on my laptop, but I can't seem to get my act together. I blame the impending start of the school year and my giddy state of anticipation at the prospect of being alone.. in my house... all by myself... almost every single day. Wheeeeee! The NASA letter thing is kind of cool, actually. One of Dr. v.'s fraternity brothers is an astronaut, see? And he's kind of going up on the space shuttle in October? And he's going to replace this guy on the International Space Station for a little while? And he kind of invited anyone who was interested in watching a launch to add their name to his "friends and family" list a while back? So we have, like, kinda been invited to go watch the launch in October? In other news, I finished painting the kitchen a luscious tomato red, and it makes me incredibly happy to look at.

      Shuttle Lands Safely
The space shuttle Endeavour landed safely on earth on Tuesday at 12.32 pm Et. Even though the shuttle landed safely it was not without drama. A peice of foam fell off during liftoff and once  made a 3 inch gash in the tiles. After inspection NASA determined that it was safe for reentry. Endeavor also had to come home one day early due to hurricane Dean and the fear that it would hit Houston, TX where mission control is for NASA. Even after it became clear that Dean posed no threat NASA still decided to bring the crew home early. The crew made a total of four space walks on this trip. They also replaced a new truss segment to the space station, replaced a failed gyroscope and delivered about 5,000 lbs worth of supplies.  This flight spanned 13 days and 5.3 million miles. the next shuttle flight is slated for liftoff in late October

Damage by Foam not Ice: NASA gives shuttle's underside a close look
CNN News story link NASA gives shuttle's underside a close look  Managers say gouge caused by foam, not ice, so it may be less seriousAstronauts use robotic arm, laser-tipped boom to check depth of gashNASA looking to mitigate recurring problem of ice forming on fuel tank bracketsShuttle exposed to 2,300-degree temperatures as it passes through atmosphereHOUSTON, Texas (AP)-- Astronauts worked Sunday to give NASA a closer look at a troubling gouge on the Endeavour's protective heat shield to help determine whether they need to repair the 3-inch wound on the space shuttle's belly.Astronaut Charles Hobaugh used the international station's robotic arm to pull a 50-foot laser-tipped boom from Endeavour's cargo bay and hand it off to the shuttle's robotic arm.Later in the day, teacher-turned-astronaut Barbara Morgan and crewmate Tracy Caldwell were gingerly maneuvering the shuttle's robotic arm to scan the damage in the difficult-to-reach belly area. NASA Currently Analyzing Extent of Space Shuttle Ice Damage
As astronauts continue their spacewalk mission NASA is trying to determine the extent of the ice damage on the heat shield of space shuttle Endeavour.  Pictures taken from a routine inspection showed a three square inch gouge on the space shuttle, which NASA thinks was caused by ice that was formed by humid air contacting the liquid hydrogen fuel tank. Tomorrow astronauts will use the robotic arm, which has a camera attached to it, to look closer at the damage, and will also determine the depth of the gouge by using a laser.  If NASA determines that the astronauts will have to fix it then they will extend the mission to allow the astronauts to perform another spacewalk to fix the damage using the materials that are already available to the astronauts. As of now three spacewalks are scheduled with the possibility of a fourth, depending on how bad the damage is.  If a fourth spacewalk is required then the mission will be extended from 11 days to 14 days.

      ENDEAVOUR SHUTTLE - STS118
Just watched the launch of Shuttle STS118 (Endeavour) live on NASA TV. I haven't watched a Shuttle launch on live TV for absolutely years and watching it on-line at NASA.gov was a great new experience. It is amazing to think that the Shuttle program has been in orbit now for some 26 years, and despite the various setbacks along the way it is hard to believe that the Sun is about to set on the Shuttle program. I watched the first Shuttle launch on Tv from behind my desk at school and watching this most recent launch raised the adrenalin level a few degrees. What an absolutely awesome ride! Eight minutes to Earth orbit and the ride of your life is worth paying for in my book. The pictures shot from the main tank camera showing Earth receding into the distance were fantastic and it reminded me of watching the film taken from the Saturn 5 launches of the Apollo program, pictures that will probably be seen again in the coming years when NASA gets the Orion project off the launchpad. Microsoft Photosynth Software Shows Shuttle Pre-Launch
Microsoft’s Photosynth software is basically an application that takes hundreds of photos of a certain landmark, object or building allowing it to be seen in a ‘3D view’ on the computer. Microsoft’s latest 3d model coverage is the Space Shuttle Endeavour on the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, before it launches. It allows you to move around, zoom in and view with great accuracy. It really is a great and innovative idea that I’m sure someone like Google will catch onto soon and make faster, simpler and easier to use. What do you think of the Microsoft Photosynth Software?
NASA Spells Space Shuttle Name Wrong
Some genius at NASA created a banner and spelled the orbiters name wrong. Instead of spelling it Endeavour they spelled it Endeavor. You would think that if anyone could spell the name right it would be the ones that operate the shuttle. Nice going. Here is the full article.

      space shuttle astronauts
How nervous are shuttle astronauts you ask? They’re so nervous you couldn’t drive a pin up their asses with a sledge hammer. If you put a dime on a railroad track and let trains run over it for a week, you wouldn’t be able to slide it between their butt cheeks. That’s how nervous they are.

A Piece of the Past Hitches a Ride on Next Space Shuttle Mission
Can you imagine what the citizens of Jamestown would have thought of this? Picture a piece of Apollo 11 being the first cargo moved through a wormhole powered transgalactic subway system in 500 years. The people of Jamestown had left England to escape religious persecution. I wonder what they would think, good or bad, about the world we have made form their humble beginnings? On the one hand they would be amazed at the technological marvels but at the same time they would wonder how state supported religious persecution had managed to take root here as it had in Britain. I wonder if they could look past the bright and shiny technology that modern day man so takes for granted and see that humanity itself has not progressed an iota since their day. Some might even say it has possibly regressed since their time. Or at least we haven’t improved our lot in life as much as we could have from our vast modern day technological wealth. We can do better and we should. Hat tip to NASA Watch for

Eco-Friendly Cruise Shuttle Approved for Victoria BC
In Victoria, British Columbia, cruise passengers are getting a greener way to travel. Their city council has just approved the use of an eco-friendly shuttle for cruise passengers to get to and from tourist areas without interfering with the regular transit. Victoria News writes Run by former Gray Line general manager Gary Gale, Cruise Victoria plans to fuel its buses with biodiesel. “We’re starting out at 20 per cent and we hope to be at 50 per cent by the end of the summer,” Gale said. The shuttles were operated by Gray Line until the end of last summer. Gale left the company in October and the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority approached him over the winter looking for a new operator. Gray Line charged cruise ship passengers $5 US or $7 Cdn last year for an all-day pass on the shuttles. Gale said the cost will be $6 in either currency this year. Mayor Alan Lowe called for the GVHA to work with tourism and business groups “to actively promote a free bus for cruise ship pa
