      QUESTION # 568: CALL ME A SHIPWRECK
Dear Useless Men,I'm watching one of those late night ads for the call me for a good time girls. You know the kind that say they are always waiting for YOUR call. All the women are about 20 or younger with huge boobs and nothing else to do with their time but get out of swimming pools, slowly and twirl phone cords while smirking at the camera. My question is... Do men REALLY think any of those women are eager for their call? If they do, why are men such simpletons?Just Curious. Dear Just Curious, Just how curious are you? ... Sorry, this is neither the time or place for that and I apologize. The short answer is: YES. The not as short, but still rather minimal answer is: men don't THINK these women are waiting for our calls. We KNOW these women are waiting for our calls, because we ARE Simpletons. The much longer answer, more so than you cared to hear, is this: To truly understand the "Call me for a Good Time Girls" phenomenon, we have to go as far back as ancient Greece and a smal

Missing the boat on shipwreck treasures
12 July 2007 (New Straits Times) - Lucien de Guise, curator of the Malaysian Museum of Islamic Arts, writes a column about the sale of shipwreck treasures in Malaysia. Missing the boat on shipwreck treasures JUST in case anyone thought that the last discussion about fakes was the end of the series, it was actually the beginning. My email inbox is once again filling up with opportunities to detect the bad boys in a ceramics collection. A short time after Peter Lam came from Hong Kong at the request of the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society to talk about “Detecting the Fakes”, we now have Roxanna Brown of the Southeast Asian Ceramics Museum of Bangkok giving her expertise on ceramic dates. In addition, there is Sten Sjostrand on the subject of “How to Identify Real Antiques from Fakes”. It’s no wonder Malaysia is so interested in fakes. The nation is Public Enemy Number One in the all-round piracy league table, after China of course. On a per-capita basis, Malaysi

      Shipwreck Teaches Students About History
ON THE JAMES RIVER, Va. (AP) - Five 13-year-olds in life jackets crowded inside the cabin of a small research boat and stared at a bank of computer monitors.Suddenly, a dark gray mass appeared on one of the screens - a sonar image of the wreckage of the Civil War-era frigate USS Cumberland. As members of the Cumberland Club, the kids studied artifacts from the ship, then helped researchers beam sonar to the bottom of the James River near the coal piers in Newport News to check on the condition of the ship itself. The U.S. Navy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration hold the summer enrichment program, which gives students a hands-on feel for what it's like to be historians, archaeologists and marine scientists."It was fun to be able to do things that are important that kids don't usually get to do," said Jazmine Brooks of Norfolk, who'll be in eighth grade in the fall. The Cumberland Club, now in its second year, is free to the middle school students and funded by a gra

      The Belitung Shipwreck
Earlier this month, I was able to catch a lecture about the shipwreck laden with Tang Dynasty treasures that sunk off Belitung island in the 9th century. What was it about this shipwreck that made it so spectacular? What treasures were stored aboard the ship and where was it headed? And what did the Belitung Shipwreck tell us about maritime trade n Asia and Southeast Asia at that time? The Belitung Shipwreck was discovered in 1998 - like most shipwrecks, this one was discovered by chance by some fisherman. The wreck rested on relatively shallow waters - about 17 metres below the sea-level and recovery of the wreck took about two years. It is currently the oldest shipwreck in Southeast Asian waters. The majority of the cargo (some 60,000 pieces) recovered consists of ceramics, most of which are Changsha ware. Changsha ware was mass produced for export in Tang China, and the dates imprinted on a couple of the bowls place the shipwreck from between 826 and 850AD. Other significant finds

      Shipwreck
A shipwreck, seen from Land's End in Cornwall. I could be wrong, but I think this is the RMS Mulheim, which ran aground in March 2003.This is the only decent shot I got at Land's End from our recent visit due to bad weather (the only outdoors shot anyway - some from the Doctor Who exhibition coming soon). A shame as we quite fancied a stroll along the cliff side path.Nikon 18-200mm at 170mm, f/9, 1/125sec

      Large Shipwreck Update
Reviews have built up during Christmas, so I'll just do them all in one post.Leading The Charge and International Herald Tribune have the same review and describe Jennifer Ehle's performance like this: One involves the lovely Jennifer Ehle , bewitching as Herzen"s free-spirited wife. She is a woman who gives a bit too freely — and to one too many people. Her dalliance with German poet George Herwegh (a humorously self-centered David Harbour) threatens to capsize her marriage to Herzen. Elysa Gardner from USA Today is impressed by Shipwreck's script and scope. Ehle makes a convincing soul mate and sparring partner, relaying Natalie's fierce emotions and convictions with a stringent intensity. The Variety Review is out: The compelling work of O'Byrne and Ehle dominates the play, and their confrontation, when Alexander learns of Natalie's affair, is shattering.Newsday.com reports: Women, who seemed a bit too "Little Women" in the first section, have far more fascinating things to

      Shipwreck Opening Night
Playbill.com reports on the Shipwreck opening night. It appears good friend Julianna Margulies was there in support as well! Julianna Margulies, of "E.R.," who did time at Lincoln Center, too (Ten Unknowns) and Broadway last spring (Festen), was Ehle's cheerleader for the evening. "Yes, I am also biased, but I think it's a spectacular theatrical experience." She hopes to be back on the boards herself soon. "I'm looking for something, but I always need a break in between." Ehle, who copped her Tony as another of Stoppard's chaotically married women in the revival of The Real Thing six years ago, would be more than at home in the role without the little summer brush-up she did as Lady Macbeth opposite Liev Schreiber in the park. "I have never been as happy on stage saying a playwright's words as when I am playing a Stoppard woman," she declared. "It's true. I just adore attempting to embody them." Accent on "body." She does a nude scene here, and O'Brien has directed it with

      Shipwreck reviews
The LCT blog has been updated: "New York 1848"All That Chat has been talking about Ms Ehle in Shipwreck, although their reviews contain spoilers. First mention: I'm surprised to see so little mention of Jennifer Ehle. I walked away from the performance feeling that this portion was really her play. Though Herzen is clearly the main character, it seems that Ehle is given all the best moments (and the final bow). Judging from the first two plays, Ehle is really getting the choice female roles. And boy is she great!Second mention: I liked Ehle a lot in this one too - it's a very different character from Lubov in Part I and she draws the distinction well. Third mention mention (with spoilers). There are lots of other Ehle-non-specific reviews as well, here.

      Shipwreck
Well crew, I'm home so here's the first splash of Shipwreck news and reviews.Firstly thank-you to Kate for the heads-up on this positive review of Ms Ehle from "Just Goes To Show You"(be warned that the rest is not so nice): "...The one exception among the actors with a lot of material here is Jennifer Ehle, who gives an emotional, capivating performance as Herzen's wife." Elizabeth Maupin's blog reported that she will see the marathon."And then there's the required reading list the New York Times published a week or two ago -- the tomes you supposedly have to read to understand this stuff." So much for not having to do any homework for the play! (*See the opening night video) A positive review from All That Chat But I saw part two, Shipwreck, this afternoon, and I found it completely enthralling. I saw it without having first seen Voyage. Perhaps part two is more interesting than part one? I think that the person with whom I attended, who had seen Voyage and liked it, liked thi
