Known to all as simply R' Shimon, R' Shimon Shkop is one of the 'Roshei Yeshiva' who has become part of the staple diet of all yeshiva students. His chidushim in Shaarei Yosher with new and unique ways of looking at talmudic topics, revolutionised Torah study, and created a new foundation on which later novellae were built.Today, 9th Cheshvan is the Yarzheit of this genius who refused to stay in America and returned to Europe before WWII at the request of the Chofetz Chaim and R' Chaim Ozer. He died during the war (though not in the holocaust). Here is his biography from wikipediaRabbi Shimon Shkop (1860-1940) was a rosh yeshiva ("dean") in the Telshe yeshiva and a renowned Talmudic sholar.
Three of the 'Ten Martyrs' were killed on this date: Rabbi Chanina S'gan HaCohanim, Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel and Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha. (this is brought down in the Tur and Shulchan Aruch OC 580). Their deaths are remembered in the kinah of Tisha B'Av 'Eileh Ezkera'.Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel was the grandson of Hillel. He was the nasi durign the end of the Second Temple period and after the destruction, at the time when Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai was the Rosh Yeshiva. His grandson was Rebbe Yehuda HaNasi.Rabbi Yishmael, Cohen Gadol went to learn Torah from Rabbi Nechuniah ben Hakanah at the age of 13. He was able to speak to angels, and when the Sages heard the decree that ten of their number were to be killed as atonement for the sin of Yosef's brothers it was R' Yishmael who ascended to Heaven to hear whether this was decreed from on High.He was very beautiful, and the Talmud tells that when he was being taken out to be killed, Caesar's daughter saw him and asked that hi
Shimon Peres is showing signs of age in sleepiness, and has also lost Labor's support for him as a presidential candidate:Vice Premier Shimon Peres is by all accounts active for his age, but time may be gaining on the octogenarian.According to the Jerusalem Post, the Labor Party's executive committee voted nearly unanimously to endorse Colette Avital rather than Peres as its choice for Israel's next president. [...]The Vice Premier, who bolted to the Kadima party after losing to Amir Peretz in the race to lead Labor, was not pleased when Channel Ten screened a clip of him falling asleep during a TV interviewer's question about Iran. [...]The interviewer, evidently from an Arab television station, asks Peres whether Israel should see development of nuclear capability in Iran as an "existential threat." The Vice Premier mumbles in response that Iran should feel threatened, and that they would in ten years see the investment in nuclear weapons as a mistake. But by the time the intervi
He never was to begin with, of course. But MK David Tal seemed to think otherwise:Vice Premier Shimon Peres told Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday evening that he does not see himself as a candidate to replace Olmert in the prime minister's office. The two agreed, however, to work together to promote Peres' bid for the presidency.Peres' comments came hours after Kadima MK David Tal said he was suited to be prime minister, in the wake of calls by senior Kadima members for the party to begin preparations to replace Olmert. That's interesting to see that Peres doesn't see himself as being fit to be prime minister. As for Tal, he was one of these party defects who jumped from party to party at least twice, from Shas to a small party once formed by Amir Peretz called One Nation, and then to Kadima, because he really didn't have much loyalty to begin with to any party or its platform.
David Bedein (via My Right Word) discovers that Shimon Peres, the already too old "statesman" has faked his record with the Israeli military:It was discovered that the internationally-known elder statesman of Israel's Knesset Parliament, Shimon Peres, 83, the member of the Israeli Knesset who has served longer than any other member of the Knesset - since 1959 - has falsified his "c.v." on the official Knesset Web site. Now mounting a "last hurrah" campaign for the seemingly honorary position of president of the state of Israel, Shimon Peres, the current Israeli deputy prime minister and the former minister of communications, minister of defense, foreign minister and prime minister has taken an unusual step to establish a new place for himself in the history of the state of Israel, by using the official Web site of the Israeli Knesset to describe his military record as such:"Military Service Haganah; IDF; Temporary Head of Naval Services, 1950"Except that Peres never served in the Hagan
