I'm having a bit of a tiff in the comments section to my post the other day, which was otherwise one of the best-received posts I've ever had. Although it is not worth reviving most of the debate here, I think the commenter does make one important point that is presumably intended to undermine my argument that political coalitions are not monolithic but are instead slowly but constantly shifting a

Workers shifting to 4-day week to save gasoline
When Ohio's Kent State University offered custodial staff the option of working four days a week instead of five to cut commuting costs, most jumped at the chance, part of a U.S. trend aimed at combating soaring gasoline prices. "We offered it to 94 employees and 78 have taken us up on it," said university spokesman Scott Rainone. The reason is simple: rising gas prices and a desire to retain

Things you have to do is to know its basis and do.All we know the essence of weight loss is to burn redundant fats. One key factor that helps burn fat is to increase the metabolism. One of the main reasons why 95% of diets fail is that your metabolism slows down during the diet until it burns less and less fat. That is also why people lose a lot of weight when they start dieting but see their weight loss rate slow down with time. What happens is that your metabolism doesn't know your dieting, it thinks your starving. And so it slows down so your burn less calories. It's a

Although there are clear signs that some of the ECB rate setters are shifting to a more neutral, if not exactly dovish stance, the anti-inflation stalwarts like Weber and Stark seem far from ready to abandon the tightening bias. Indeed, Weber sounded even more hawkish earlier today with a warning that markets are too benign in terms of the outlook for inflation based on current rate expectations (ie a cut later in the year). He not only questioned whether HICP would return to sub-2% price stability ceiling levels at all this year, but also said the staff projections made in Dec underestimates the outlook for 2009. This is widely expected to be addressed this week when updated forecasts are published in conjunction with the Mar 6 policy meeting, while in contrast GDP estimates are seen lowe

Shifting Fortunes In Iowa-- The Countdown Begins!
Americans are anxious about the future and politically, apathy abounds. But momentum and expectations build excitement and after what seem like an endless cycle of debates the countdown to Iowa has begun.Yes, finally a political marathon has been reduced to a sprint. Three weeks until the big day, January 3, 2008, when caucus goers in Iowa attempt to select those candidates who should be given tickets for a "connecting flight" to New Hampshire. Some of course, will not make that flight, and will experience 'political death' by natural cause. On the Democratic front I see contenders fading into the sunset, realizing that the road to the presidency is impassible. Surprisingly, even Biden -- considered knowledgeable on the issues and articulate, might realize this time around it is again 'No go.' The same true among Republicans where as Mike Huckabee surges, questions arise on the viability of Thompson and Ron Paul. The maverick, Senator McCain still holds on for a meaningful show. Th

Building, Diversifying, and Shifting Your Income Streams
I think many of us have heard about income streams, active income, passive income, and portfolio income before (if not, I have brief description below). I like to share some quick observations about active versus passive income as it relates to financial independence and wealth. The image above is a simplification that shows active income on one end, and passive (and portfolio) income on another. The key differentiator is how much of your time and energy is required to generate the income: active income generation requires a lot of your time and energy, whereas passive income generation can persist for days, months, or even years with very little effort. Below the continuum are various types of income stream to help make the picture whole. In my previous post, I defined financial independence as having enough income generated from passive sources to cover my family living expenses and a few luxuries. By inference, we can say that we should do the following to achieve financial i

From today, you can swap it for a similar-sized property in northern France that's half of what it would cost in south-east England, leaving you enough for a pied-a-terre in the centre of Lille.Rather than pushing your way on to the 6.36am from Faversham to Cannon Street (arriving at 7.54am), you could spend the same journey time travelling into St Pancras in a reserved seat. Throw in the added bonus of excellent restaurants, cheap food and good quality healthcare and schooling, and life on the other side of the Channel starts sounding like a no-brainer.

Colleges Shifting From Twin Size Beds to Double Side Beds
Dorms in colleges are supposed to make life easier for students. However, this includes ensuring that the dormitories that they are staying in have adequate space to ensure that they are not too cramped up. Anyone would love to have a big bed for his own. But the thing is, the limitation of space may not allow it. There are other things to consider such as the study table and other usual dormitory furniture which on their own are supposed to be as compact as possible. There is no issue with wanting complete and general respite. The problem is dorms are only temporary shelters while teens are in college. After that they are out and perhaps will stay at home for the early duration of their career. Driving Technique: Heel and Toe Shifting
I’ve noticed a good increase in the number of subscribers to my blog. So I want to welcome all my new subscribers and I hope you will enjoy this blog. For those who didn’t read my previous post Welcome BMW E36 blog readers! yet, please do and remember to fill your information in the comments box below that post. Heel and Toe is a driving technique. Drivers use the “heel and toe” method to smoothly combine braking and downshifting as they approach a corner. Good drivers know that blipping the throttle between gears in a downshift to speed up the engine to match the tire speed keeps the wheels from locking and stops the back end from getting loose. Heel-and-toeing simply combines blipping the throttle with braking. On early European sports and racing cars with a central throttle, the pedals were set up so the driver could use the ball of his right foot on the brake and the heel of the same foot on the gas. On modern cars, the driver uses the right side of his foot

      The Paradigm is Shifting
Corporate America can no longer be trusted to take care of us; in fact some might say they’re robbing us blind. Gone are the days of loyal, 40-year careers with one company. People are losing their jobs right and left as companies go overseas; millions go without health insurance, and social security is in danger of disappearing altogether, while mega-wealthy corporate elites line their pockets. They control everything - from politicians to the economy, to the commercials that influence what you buy, to the pitiful salary you earn trading time for money - all to make themselves even wealthier. Interest rates go up and stocks fall; people lose their houses. The rich get even richer. How long are people going to be loyal to this antiquated business model, not to mention the products themselves, when there are honest, ethical, people-helping-people businesses out there trying to tell you they’re willing to share the wealth that is created when they don’t spend over 80% o

Is France Shifting it’s Stance on the Iraq War?
According to this acticle from iht.com, France may be shifting it’s stance on the Iraq war. Now with president Nicolas Sarkozy replacing Jacques Chirac it seems as though France is more willing to take an active role. Not militarily but possibly diplomatically. Jacques Chirac’s policy was to oppose the United States at every opportunity, now the new president seems to be more willing to work with us. After years of shunning involvement in a war it said was wrong, France now believes it may hold the key to peace in Iraq, proposing itself as an “honest broker” between the Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish factions. The shift was one of the most concrete consequences yet of the thaw in French-American relations following the election in May of President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose administration no longer feels bound by the adamant refusal to take a role in Iraq that characterized the reign of his predecessor, Jacques Chirac.   Perhaps Sarkozy understands the threat in his

Shifting Needed Resources from Afghanistan to Iraq

This is one section from the article on shifting of resources from Afghanistan to Iraq: In October 2002, Robert Grenier, a former director of the C.I.A.’s counterintelligence center, visited the new Kuwait City headquarters of Lt. Gen David McKiernan, who was already planning the Iraq invasion. Meeting in a sheet metal warehouse, Mr. Grenier asked General McKiernan what his intelligence needs would be in Iraq. The answer was simple. “They wanted as much as they could get,” Mr. Grenier said.Throughout late 2002 and early 2003, Mr. Grenier said in an interview, “the best experienced, most qualified people who we had been using in Afghanistan shifted over to Iraq,” including the agency’s most skilled counterterrorism specialists and Middle East and paramilitary operatives. Although, these cities are at the threshold of real estate boom, they have been successful in attracting large interests of prospective investors. Sex Ed landscape shifting in states
While eighth-graders in North Clackamus, Ore., are learning the correct way to put on condoms, some of their counterparts in New Hanover, N.C., are using books that say, “There is not a lot of proof that condoms really work. Would you trust your life to one?”State and district officials are dealing with a variation of that question. With the April release of a congressionally authorized study showing that kids who took abstinence-only classes were just as likely to have premarital sex as those who weren’t in the classes, states are asking: Should we entrust our students to abstinence-only programs? For a rising number of states, the answer is no. While a majority still requires that abstinence be stressed in sex education, lately there has been a movement toward comprehensive education that teaches about contraception along with abstinence. This shift has been bolstered by Democratic gains in statehouses and Congress. The debate over sex education has been long-running and passiona

      Shifting from Search to Subscription
"The data-enabled mobile is and will continue to be at the core of the Live Web. Because the Live Web is about immediacy, there is no other option. Mobiles are two-way devices, enabling us to publish as well as consume, both text and rich media. As wireless data networks become faster and cheaper, use of mobiles for "sensing" the world around us will grow. If the underlying plumbing for the Reference Web is in the form of HTML documents being pulled by users, then it is RSS being syndicated to users that is at the heart of the Live Web. And this means the primary way we interact with the two Webs will be different, shifting from Search to Subscription." Rajesh Jain's I wouldn't shift from Search to Subscription, I would rather use both. There are moments for Search and moments for Subscription.I do not want to become a passive consumer of what the others provide me, I want to be able to use my "critical intelligence" to Search and decide what I want to read, after seeing what the oth

Shifting Values from Service to Dollars
Shifting Values from Service to DollarsI was sent a pdf recently entitled Of Champs, Chumps and Chimps written by Philip Jeyaratnam who is the President of The Law Society of Singapore and also a highly successful author.I found an element in the article to be a call to social consciousness, something that Philip Jeyaratnam has developed a solid and well deserved reputation for over the years. The following is the last paragraph of the pdf I was sent. And to me it is also a great opportunity for the rest of us to reflect on what we do professionally and the degree to which we contribute beyond simply making money."But there seems no way to redress the underlying shift in how we account for our time on earth - a shift from values of service and significance to emphasis of success measured in dollars and cents. But it is a terrible shame all the same. And whether the cause is hopeless or not, we should not succumb just yet. The profession still has plenty of room for socially aware, dedi

Manifesting Alternative Realities by Shifting Timelines
Quantum science tells us that there is not a flat line running from the past to the future. This is the view of most people, but it is based on the old science, and is no longer true. Einstein has proven that time is not fixed, it expands and it contracts. And, time has a vertical dimension. There are many “lanes of time” running simultaneously and you can change lanes. You can begin in one lane, then change lanes to produce a different outcome than you expected in the original lane. This means there are multiple possibilities existing simultaneously in any instant, subject to our conscious and intentional choice. We have the power to direct our awareness through this field of creative intelligence scientists call the quantum hologram. And through powerful thought we can activate another vertical strand of time, one in which we are whole and well and already healed, because we never were sick. The same applies to every area of life, relationships, finances and success. Peak perfor

Like palm fronds in a shifting breeze
Those whose actions arise from truly profound readings of the Qur’an are in every age in the minority. Those who play at politics or play with ideological interpretations of religion are in vast abundance. In between are many who stand confused - without firm knowledge we are sometimes swayed this way, sometimes that - waving [...]

      Shifting on gifted
The bill that has advocates for gifted education in an uproar got amended in the Florida Senate today. The amendment would cap funding for gifted high school students at this year's level, rather than eliminating the money for gifted education in high school altogether, as originally proposed. Bill sponsor Sen. Stephen Wise said he also would be asking the Legislature's auditing wing, OPPAGA, to look into how the gifted funding is being spent and whether high school students are "double dipping" by getting money for gifted and other special programs. The Senate still must have a final reading on the bill. The House has yet to vote on its version of the bill. Several amendments have been filed, including one that would similarly cap high school gifted funding. And handwringing among the advocates continues.

PLACE SHIFTING://Orange joins Vodafone Germany and 3G UK
Orange launched 'Mon PC à distance', a place-shifting service to enjoy your PC-content on your mobile (over 3G). Technology is from Nokia. Hutch 3G UK got a lot of attention (justly) for its new X-series, which uses Orb Networks' technology. Vodafone Germany earlier teamed with Orb for 'Vodafone-Mein PC'. Personally, I feel this is a pretty useful application, just like video/TV over wireless

      Shifting
When I greeted the dark-eyed juncos yesterday morning, coffee mug in hand, twenty-one bookcases lined the walls of the little house in the tiny woods on the prairie. By the time I crawled into bed last night, they numbered twenty-two.This means, of course, that I spent most of yesterday cleaning and shifting. It's funny. When I was in high school, I worked as a page in the town's library. I loved my work, but I really loathed being told, "The 600s need to be shifted," or "We're running out of room in popular fiction. It's time to shift again." There was never enough shelf space for the proposed shift; the volumes were often packed too tightly for browsing; and, golly, but it was a dirty, dusty job.Shifting one's own books, though? What a pleasure. To move the books, to rearrange them, is to handle them, to meet them again. A delight.A home without books is a body without soul. (Cicero)Looking for holiday gift ideas?
