I'm not going to be drawn into any arguments of whether something is Shepherd's Pie or Cottage Pie. Blix, my mom's German Shepherd, wandered up to our front yard in Florida, near the end of 2002 (or possibly early 2003). He was skinny and hungry and had obviously been abandoned. Of course, we took him in. At the time, Hans Blix was in the news left and right regarding nuclear inspections in Iraq and the fact that he was finding no signs whatsoever of WMDs, despite the Bush Administration's insistance that they were there. We named the dog after him. My mom's house is set up such that the three dogs (she also has a chow and a black lab, also both rescued strays) live in the fenced in back yard, while the cats live in the front yard and/or the house. Recently Blix has decided that he would much rather live with the cats than with his fellow canines, and has learned how to hop the fence. I always love Robert De Niro and Matt Damon. They're one my favorite actors. Last night, we watched "The Good Shepherd" and it was really good. Edward Wilson played by Matt Damon, the only witness to his father's suicide and member of the Skull and Bones Society while a student at Yale, is a morally upright young man who values honor and discretion, qualities that help him to be recruited for a career in the newly founded Office of Strategic Services (OSS, the predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency). While working there, his ideals gradually turn to suspicion influenced by the Cold War paranoia present within the office. Eventually, he becomes an influential veteran operative, while his distrust of everyone around him increases to no end. His dedication to his work does not come without a price though, leading him to sacrifice his ideals and eventually his family.If you haven't seen the movie, you should go and watch it! Ingredients:450 Gram Minced lamb (1 lb)1 Large Onion, chopped1 Bay leaf50 Gram Mushrooms, sliced (2 oz)2 Carrots, diced25 Gram Plain flour (1 oz)300 ml Lamb or beef stock (1/2 pint)1 Tablespoon Tomato purée700 Gram Potatoes (1 1/2 lb)25 Gram Butter (1 oz)4 Tablespoon Milk50 Gram Lancashire cheese, crumbled (2 oz)Method:1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 °C / 400 °F / Gas 6.2. Dry fry the lamb with the onion, bay leaf, mushrooms and carrots for 8-10 minutes. Add the flour and cook, stirring for 1 minute. Gradually blend in the stock and tomato purée. Cook, stirring, until the mixture thickens and boils.3. Cover and simmer gently for 25 minutes. Remove the bayleaf and spoon into a 1.7 litre (3 pint) ovenproof serving dish.4. Meanwhile, cook the potatoes in boiling water for 20 minutes until tender. Drain well and mash with the butter and milk and mix well. Pile onto the mince mixture and sprinkle over the cheese5. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Serve hot with a green vegetable.Serves-4

I've been putting off seeing the doctor about my rheumatoid arthritis until I went in for my annual checkup. When Jesse switched jobs back in August, we switched insurance carriers, so I lost the doctor who had been caring for me for almost two years. That was one of the reasons I went from 30 pills a day down to one. But I'm not dealing with the pain very well, it's come to inhabit every part of my life and my mind, so I made an appointment to see a doctor yesterday. She was new to me, so I had to tell her the whole story of the last 2-1/2 years of pain. As she questioned me carefully about the different meds I've taken, I could feel my hands starting to shake, and when she commented that I didn't seem to be functioning well with the chronic pain, I surprised us both by bursting into tears. On our latest podcast we mentioned that Sea Shepherd had posted a reward for anyone able to provide them with the co-ordinates of the Japanese whaling vessels currently in the Antarctic.
The good news is that Sea Shepherd has finely found the vessels and was disrupting their activities.
The bad news is that two people from Sea Shepherd have been reported missing.
The inflatable carrying an Australian and American was last seen operating alongside the factory ship Nisshin Maru when a sudden fog and drizzle descended on the sea near the Balleny Islands, south west of Tasmania, according to a Sea Shepherd statement.
