The countryside must've followed me back to Shenzhen. This morning I heard an unfamiliar sound just about the time my alarm went off. From the 16th floor of my building, with windows closed, I heard the rooster. It sounded like it came from the floor above me.After my shower, I heard the rooster at it again. Shortly thereafter, I heard the sound of someone strangling it. Guess they had to prepare

According to today's Shenzhen Daily, Longgang has experienced 10 earthquakes in the past 19 days. The epicenter of these quakes is about a two-hour bus ride from my apartment, but I haven't felt anything unusual. Fortunately, all of these quakes have been less than 5.0 on the Richter scale. Does seem strange that I haven't felt anything like I did during the minor quakes a few years ago. The last

I came across an amazing article in Esquire by Colby Buzzell about Shenzhen (thanks to Laowaijohn at Twitter). This is quite possibly the best portrayal of the city since Peter Hessler's Oracle Bones (except that this one doesn't focus as much on history). It's a bit lengthy and almost a year old, but well worth reading.Reading through "Digging a Hole All the Way to America" I noticed the reaction

It took more than two hours to get there from Nanshan.Hakka people are Han Chinese, but have different customs than the rest of China. The migrated from the north and settled south--there are many photos of Hakka villages from Fujian province. The Crane Lake Villa was turned into a museum by the city in 1996. Prior that, it belonged to a single family--the Luo family, which began building the home during the Qing Dynasty. It is not the circular structure-style Hakka village that is shown in most pictures, but rather a trapezoid-shaped structure. There isn't much in the way of exhibits at the museum. It appears that most of it is being renovated. Many of the 300 original rooms are inaccessible at thi

the iPhone is quite simply the reason I believed in Apple as a company 18 months ago when I bought shares. As I have mentioned on a number of occasions, it is its telecommunicationally challenged brother the iPod that has been a form of rechargeable sanity for most of my time in China… and that is why when I saw a few posts on the iPhone supply chain I had to write this post.
Beginning with the recent Foxconn article in the WSJ, and my resulting post, I then stumbled upon Spendmatters’s Apple’s iPod Supply Chain post, which lead me to TEXYT’s article iPhone: Who’s the Real Manufacturer, which then took me the to Shumla’s post entitled The Apple iPhone Supply Chain, source of this diagram

At the time, Apple told Develop that iPod games development was to remain closed to developers with no publically available SDK, and that games functionality
Once again I could only get Cantonese commentary for this game, hence couldn't make out who was playing from the grainy pictures on my computer screen. But it didn't spoil my enjoyment watching the game. The gulf in class between the two sides was huge right from the get go. The end result could have been so much more had Fergie not shown mercy and fielded our token Chinese guy after we had raided 6 goals from the non-existant defence from Chinese side.Giggs (10'), Rooney (19'), Nani (23'), O'Shea (55'), Ronaldo (56') and Eagles (64') were the scorers for tonight. For the second game running, Eagles' goal has to be the pick of the bunch, with Rooney's delightful chip coming a close second.Nani showed pace and skill in his debut. The link up was sorely missing from him, but that is understandable since it's the first time he's on the pitch with the team. I'm looking for that to improve significantly. Eagles impressed me again. For a young man who hasn't played many first

We took my niece to Hong Kong Disneyland for her birthday and tried to find the cheapest package not realizing it's hidden costs and problems. There were thus many forgettable experiences. Here are the top 10 things to remember to help you pick the right package tour to these Chinese cities:1. You get what you pay forIf it's too cheap, be wary since these tour organizers will definitely make money from you some other way. You'll find out how as you read on. We wanted to save but the hassle and hidden costs were not worth the savings. Trust me!2. Go for the tried and tested travel agencies Although I've seen tried and tested travel agencies advertising in newspapers, many others could be in the category of fly-by-night. Don't be fooled by the rates they publish since there are more hidden charges. Our tour was a little over US$150 in the newspapers but ended up close to US$350 when all the costs were added in. Everyone’s been talking about how hot China is, so I did a little research and came up with these:
Dow Jones Shen Zhen Index:
Dow Jones Shanghai Index:
The charts look almost the same but if you look closely they are slightly different. I guess the Shen Zhen index is slightly different from the Shanghai index? Shen Zhen is a rapidly developing city that is about 45 minutes away from Hong Kong by train. They’ve both been uptrending since late last year, and show no sign of stopping!
Shenzhen is the highest personal income in China. I had a short trip to China because of celebration of Chinese New Year which is the most important festival for Chinese.I found that many relatives who have more than one flat or house. Normally, domestic flat owners with three to five flats/ houses is not uncommon. According to their opinion, China government's economic adjustment policies will not workable because the high return. The rent can cover the mortgage in Shenzhen with needs as many population coming from the other parts of China.Besides, they are no need to pay mortgage for most of their flats from the fruit of early investment. What I worried is that more and more youngsters even don't work because they can sustain their livelihood from rent. It is unhealthy for China economic development at all.

The mountain’s paths aren’t surfaced, yet the climb [...]
