Desi (or Deshi; pronounced [ˈd̪eːsi] or [ˈd̪eːʃi], Hindi: देशी, Urdu: دیسی) is an North Indian word literally meaning "of the country" (in reference to the Indian subcontinent as the country). It usually refers to someone or something "local", "regional" or "indigenous" to the Indian subcontinent, as opposed to videshi/bideshi/pardesi विदेशी, وِدسی meaning "foreign". "Desh" means country, hence the origin of Bangladesh (Bangla being the language). Although the term is most often used when referring to those directly from the Indian subcontinent, it is sometimes colloquially used to refer to people of Indian origin (whether or not they are born or living in South Asia). This use of the actual word as a colloquialism was created in the United Kingdom durin

A mixed day for both subjects and weather. It all started with a small, in world terms, but fairly large for the UK at 1.00am with an earth quake (5.3), not quite the 'right' alarm call and a few hours to early...Arriving before dawn to more cloud cover than hoped but during the morning some breaks gave glimmers of hope, but as time went on the cloud increased over the higher moors and light rain arrived around midday. Thankfully as the afternoon progressed the cloud began to break again. The area is divided between lovely towns and countryside dotted with farms, some of the towns have some stunning old mills and rows of stone buildings lining the valley sides but with the weather being so poor at the time, a return visit is planned. Well worth exploring are all the small winding lanes th
Talk of a potential banana-skin tie proved misguided as Arsenal’s youngsters comprehensively dismantled a disappointing Sheffield United side at Bramall Lane.Arsenal eased into the quarter finals of the Carling Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over a disappointing Sheffield United side.Rarely troubled by the hosts, Wenger’s men took the lead early on through Eduardo. The Croatian doubled his tally for the night shortly after half-time, before a deflected shot from Denilson 20 minutes before full time sealed Arsenal’s spot in the quarter-finals.First HalfSheffield United made seven changes from the side that drew with Hull on Saturday.Nevertheless, Bryan Robson’s side were quick out of the blocks and enjoyed their first chance on four minutes as Arsenal’s young defence failed to cle
Match PreviewArsenal's youngsters came out 3-0 winners at Bramall Lane, following an impressive performance from the club's up-and-coming stars. A brace from Eduardo and a goal from Neves Denilson wrapped up a Carling Cup game which had been completely one-sided.Arsenal had sixteen shots to United's six, and had an equally lopsided share of possession, controlling the ball for no less than 68% of the game. The Gunners have booked themselves a berth in the next round of the competition where they could end up playing the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, or cross-town rivals Tottenham.Lineups:Arsenal: Lukasz Fabianski; Justin Hoyte, Alex Song, Kieran Gibbs, Lassana Diarra; Neves Denilson, Gilberto Silva, Abou Diaby; Nicklas Bendtner, Eduardo da Silva, Theo WalcottSheffield United: Ian Bennett; Chris Armstrong, Leigh Bromby, Chris Lucketti, Chris Morgan; David Carney, Nick Montgomery, Steven Quinn, Michael Tonge; Billy Sharp, Jonathan SteadThe first five minutes of the game started
If you cast your minds back to a few years back and a match at Bramall Lane in the Fa Cup. We drew the game 0-0 after Extra Time but came through after a penalty shootout. Then cast your minds back to last season on a cold new years eve night and another visit to Sheffield, we lost 1-0 that night. The main thing the Sheffield United teams we played against had in common was their desire and lionheart attitude. Even though Wenger will probably field the youngsters again - beating the leaders of the Premier League will be a major achievement should the United players pull it off. They will be up for it, the crowd will get behind them and our boys will have to stand up and be counted.
The team I expect to see out there tomorrow night is this:

Premier League leaders Arsenal take on the Championships nineteenth placed team, Sheffield United, this Wednesday in the fourth round of the Carling Cup. The Premiership giants were lucky to avoid drawing against the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, but the Blades will not be nearly so happy to have to face Arsenal.Arsenal played twice against United during the Blades brief one season stint in the Premiership, and while Arsenal demolished United 3-0 at the Emirates, the Blades will take some solace in the fact that they were able to defeat Arsenal 1-0 at Bramall Lane - the locale of Wednesday's fixture. On current form though, Arsenal are far superior. Arsenal's first team is on a run of unbeaten games dating back to last April against West Ham. This season, Arsene Wenger's young guns went on a streak of twelve straight wins which was broken on Sunday in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield. Arsenal are at the head of the Premiership table with eight wins, two draws, and no losses
This trip has been planned for almost a year. The result of a previous mid winter visit which was purely accidental when spotting two walkers on the path (to the right hand side of the river - second picture) and wondering how they got there. The answer was a small track off the main road from Sheffield to Manchester at Woodhead (Woodhead Pass) located after the dams when approaching from the Manchester side, and from all accounts a busy place in Summer with children in the stream, family picnics etc.The hope was for lots of autumn colour, but for some reason the trees (mostly Silver Birch) in the valley (there are three tributaries) were almost bare, whilst those outside the valley had yellow or brown leaf, some even still green. As stated before, the river splits into three and each climbs quite steeply, this produces a series a small waterfalls/rapids as each falls down their steep sided valley. To obtain the best view point in relation to the sun/river/background meant crossing the
It seems as if it is not just the United States where gun related deaths are on the increase, as news has just come that a 16-year-old boy shot dead. Sky News reports that the boy’s body was found in a recreation area in Sheffield last night. Armed police are now patrolling the area of Burngreave, which is where the body was found.
Police have said that they believe that the offenders who carried out this crime are local; police are asking any witnesses who have information to come forward.
Although gun crime is very rare in Sheffield, it seems as if the city is getting like many others in the UK where gun related crimes are on the increase.

ESPN.com is reporting that in an interview with HBO's "Real Sports", which will air next Tuesday, Gary Sheffield says that Yankees manager Joe Torre treats black players differently from white players. Sheffield also said that Derek Jeter is not "all the way" black as he is bi-racial.Here are some parts/Sheffield quotes from the ESPN.com article:Sheffield says Torre treats black players differently from white players and says Jeter, who is from a mixed-race marriage, "ain't all the way black," during the interview with Andrea Kremer, as reported by Newsday.Sheffield, who left the Yankees after last season to sign a free-agent deal with the Detroit Tigers, claimed that a "couple of blacks that were there" had an issue with Torre."They weren't treated like everybody else. I got called out in a couple of meetings that I thought were unfair," Sheffield told Kremer.Sheffield later added: "He had a message to get across to the whole team, so he used me to get the message across." A popular Gatecrasher One nightclub - formerly The Republic - on 112 Arundel Street in the South Yorkshire district of Sheffield, UK has partly collapsed in a massive fire at round 5pm GMT this afternoon.
BBC reports that emergency crews were called to the venue on Monday evening. Two people were believed to be inside the building when the fire took hold but escaped the premises unharmed after calling emergency.
According to city officials the Arundel Street end of the two-story building later collapsed, narrowly missing firefighters. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said five crews - about 25 firefighters - were at the scene tackling the blaze at its height."It is not a great sight, but from our point of view the main thing is that the building was evacuated," managing director of Gatecrasher, Simon Raine, tells BBC. "There is no injury or loss of life and in these situations that is the key factor."
The statement on the club's official website reads:

I’m uncertain where the issue originated, but both Major League Baseball and most media outlets consistently press the issue of a decreasing African-American representation in baseball. Sometimes I almost feel like people are suggesting MLB should feel ashamed or that MLB is responsible.
Whether that is true or not, I don’t know. But I do know there is a lot of finger pointing and MLB doesn’t exactly act like they are trying to defend any one position over the other. In fact, I think they often frame the debate in a way that suggests they also feel it is a problem (but think that the answer to which lies in repetitive vainglorious PR events and honors).
Several weeks ago, I did a series on the issue of baseball’s ethnicity, using the dwindling African-American numbers as the launching pad. Since that time, Gary Sheffield prompted a big stir over comments made during an interview with GQ magazine in which he stated:
I called it years ago. What I called is that you’re
As we are on the cusp of Hank Aaron’s home run record being broken, and with the passing of the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson playing his first game in the majors, it’s been mentioned over and over that the participation of African Americans in the game of baseball is at an all-time low. Now, Gary Sheffield, the designated hitter for the Detroit Tigers has decided to opine on the situation. Never shying away from controversy, in an interview with GQ Magazine, he said that African-Americans have been replaced with Latin ballplayers as the prevailing minority in the sport because they are “easier to control”. He quotes: "I called it years ago. What I called is that you're going to see more black faces, but there ain't no English going to be coming out. … [It's about] being able to tell [Latin players] what to do -- being able to control them," he told the magazine. "Where I'm from, you can't control us. You might get a guy to do it that way for a while becau
Detroit Tigers Designated Hitter Gary Sheffield has been suspended by MLB for three games for his "aggressive actions" towards home plate umpire Greg Gibson during the Thursday game between the Tigers and the Cleveland Indians. Sheffield appealed the suspension which came down on Friday. He will be allowed to play until he meets later this season in New York with MLB Vice President Bob Watson, who is in charge of player discipline. Sheffield said on Friday that if he is not exonerated, he will reveal a "conspiracy" within the ranks of MLB.Sheffield was ejected during the fifth inning of the Tiger's loss to the Indians by a score of 11-5. Sheffield argued a called strike with Gibson, and subsequently grounded out, breaking his bat and throwing the handle in the direction of Gibson. The action caused Gibson to eject Sheffield from the contest, and with Watson's ruling it appears that MLB believes Sheffield was throwing the handle at Gibson. The loss was Detroit's fifth in the last six
I saw this story yesterday and somehow the irony escaped me the first time I read it, but when I saw it again today, it hit me.From the Tribune:Elijah Dukes, starting his first game at Tropicana Field since last week's events, received a subdued mixture of cheers and boos when he batted in the first inning Monday. But someone in the other dugout is pulling for him."We all need somebody to help us through our youth," Tigers star - and Tampa native - Gary Sheffield said.Dukes' youth (if you call still being in trouble in your 20's your youth) is filled with run-ins with the law, including his most recent escapade in which he barged into his wife's middle school classroom at lunchtime and also made threats to kill her and their children. No need to worry though. Gary Sheffield, the steadying influence, is there to guide him."I'm no authority figure, like you've got to listen to me," Sheffield said. "I just want to help him. This from one of the biggest malcontents in the history of pr
Well, not literally the £30 Million match, but dubbed by the media and press, Charlton entered this huge 6pointer knowing it was a must win affair. Most fans knew that we had to win, although it wouldn't be too bad with a loss/draw, a win would ease the pressure of the three tough upcoming fixtures. The Club had gone a long way to lift the atmosphere by giving out free clappers and also arranging Bjorn Again as pre match entertainment. Add that with the usual drumming and flag, the atmosphere should be immense.Charlton started the first half well and seemed to be egged on by the 'Up-For-It' crowd. Unfortunately the first half ended up being a bit dull, so half time was welcome relief.Once again Charlton started well in the second, at at '59, The Elk hit a shot towards the United goal, it deflected against one of their defenders and the net bulged. I havent seen the crowd go so crazy in such a long time. It was amazing! Then the whole stadium stood while singing "Stand Up, If You're

Two early goals, one in each half settled the game. We never really gotten our engine started when Carrick took on a beautiful pass from Ronaldo and lifted it deftly past Kenny in the 3rd minute of the game.Rob Styles, as usual, was ridiculously inconsistant with his yellow card decisions. For most parts of the first half, he let Sheffied United get away with murder. The tackle on Evra which resulted in his substitution was horrendous. It could have broken a leg, yet Styles let the perpetrator off with a warning.Smith too got a huge kick in the buttocks and his perpetrator got off with a warning. His shorts was almost ripped off in that tackle. Yet almost comically, Ronaldo's marker Geary was booked for a foul that looked really innocent. I never understand Rob Styles when he referees.Anyway, early in the second half, Giggs made a sublime pass to Rooney and he swept it into the goal. Sheffield United, quite truthfully, never really looked like threatening our goal. They looked like th
Gary Sheffield has always had one of the more violent swings in baseball, at least when he was healthy. As powerful as that swing is, it has also been one of the more successful -- when Sheffield is healthy. After taking his textbook cuts in a game against Cleveland Thursday night, it looks like Sheffield's swing is back. "You know how I know I'm fine?" Sheffield said. "I don't even think about the wrist. I haven't been thinking about it unless somebody asks me about it. That tells me I'm good to go."A torn ligament and dislocated tendon in his left wrist limited Sheffield to 39 games for the Yankees last year after he played in at least 130 games each of the previous 10 seasons and had driven in 100 or more runs in six of the previous seven seasons. The Tigers picked up the 38-year-old slugger in an attempt to add more power to their lineup. Some viewed the transaction as a gamble, but so far this spring Sheffield looks like he's back, and he should give the Tigers one of the
I was glad to read that the CCTV camera trial in Sheffield taxis has been successful, (see page 20) because I believe that every cab should be fitted with such equipment and that our trade should be given grants to enable us to do it. I know there is the argument that says what good are the cameras when an incident takes place outside the cab and the cameras can’t pick it up. I don’t accept that opinion because with today’s advances in technology I believe that can be done. What’s more, the cost of the equipment is getting cheaper so it soon won’t be price that can be used as an excuse to dismiss the idea of in-cab CCTV. Sheffield City Council should be congratulated for recognizing that taxi drivers need protection and for giving CCTV cameras the chance to prove they can have a significant impact on crime. The results of the trial they carried out showed that from one incident taking place for every seven fares, it now averages one in 100.&

We won this one despite going on down early in the game.
Evra in particular was awful. After a run of good games, he couldn't keep it up, especially after being called up to the French national team in midweek. His passing was awful and Keith Gillespie was practically having his way with Evra. In the 13th minute, Gillespie headed the ball beyond Edwin to give Sheffield United the lead with Evra nowhere in sight. Throughout the entire game, Gillespie was abusing Evra. I haven't seen a black man so badly beaten since Rodney King.
Thankfully we have Rooney to thank. He scored 2 really brilliant goals, one in each half. The first goal was a result of a really great first touch, taking out the defender and flicking the ball past the keeper. The credit of the second goal has to go to Evra. He made amends with a superb cross that found Rooney who volleyed it in from close range.
We then proceeded to miss a number of good chances, the best falling to Ronaldo who somehow missed an open goal f

SIR Alex Ferguson has reported a clean bill of health for Manchester United's clash with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.Skipper Gary Neville has come through training and suffered no reaction to a calf problem while Cristiano Ronaldo is fit despite picking up an ankle injury at Blackburn last weekend.
It means Ferguson is almost certain to name an unchanged side for the third Premiership game on the trot with Patrice Evra retaining his place at left-back ahead of Gabriel Heinze. Neville says the Reds can be assured of a real test, with ex-Bury boss Neil Warnock sure to have his troops fired up. "It will be a battle at Bramall Lane," says Neville. "We had a difficult game at Reading away and at Wigan last season, because teams that have just come up always provide difficult opposition. "It's a huge game for them because the visit of Manchester United is the sort of game for which they wanted to get promoted. They are also a big club and will have
