For many people, extra storage space is at a premium. If you’re running out of room in your home, a garden shed can be an excellent and cost-effective way to make some more room. Any major garden supply retailer will have a selection to choose from, from cheaper plastic to more durable wood. They are [...]
What do people keep in their storage sheds? Are there shovels and rakes? Are there cookies and cakes? What secrets lie beneath those plastic or boarded-up doors? The rusty latch may not have budged for decades. Perhaps it is the family secret waiting to be seen. Perhaps it is the family skeleton waiting to scream. Storage sheds hold our lives, in some subtle way. They can hold our dreams or hold our fears or the things we want taken away. We cannot get rid of them, but we do not want them to stay. So, for each person, storage sheds become the way.
They come in all sizes, all shapes and all colors. They can be the dark brown of the forest or the red paint that was once your brothers. When old, it is a cold, damp place. But when young those storage sheds are a magical place.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Employers cut payrolls for a third month in a row in March and the unemployment rate jumped to a 2-1/2 year high, more evidence that a housing downturn and credit crisis may have pushed the economy into a recession. The Labor Department on Friday reported that March non-farm payrolls fell 80,000, biggest decline in five years. It also said the March unemployment rate jumped to 5.1% from 4.8%, highest since a matching rate in September 2005. (HealthDay News) -- One of the oldest known types of fungus seems to contain clues to gender development in humans.Duke University researchers report on the unusual linkage in the Jan. 10 issue of Nature. In research with Phycomyces blakesleeanus, the Duke team isolated two versions of a gene that regulates mating. They named these versions sexM (sex minus) and sexP (sex plus). Both encode for a single protein called a high mobility group (HMG)-domain protein that leads to sex differentiation through an unknown process. This protein is similar to the one encoded by the human Y chromosome, called SRY. When SRY is turned on, a developing fetus develops male characteristics. The similarity suggests HMG-domain proteins may mark the evolutionary beginnings of sex determination in fungi and humans,

Def Jam has long been known as the hub for Hip Hop releases. With the industry dealing with tough times selling records, the label's A&R sheds some light on new releases and lingering issues. “Things at Def Jam are looking great,” Lenny S said to HipHopDX. “We signed Jadakiss to Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam so that’s coming, we have another Fabolous album, another Young Jeezy album coming. And another Ghostface album by the end of the year." One of the more interesting deals has to do with Jadakiss signing with Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam. Many are curious what to expected from Jada's Def Jam debut. “It’s hot! No seriously it is," Lenny jokes. "We’re like 8 songs deep. Here is a fantastic book called "The Complete Blokes and Sheds - Stories from the shed". Amazon.com describes it as: The Complete Blokes and Sheds goes to the heart of what's sacred to many Australian men. Like the dunny (outside toilet), the footy game (football), and the meat pie with sauce, the shed has acquired an important place in Australian culture and mythology. It stands as a symbol of the Aussie male's integrity and a testimony to his ability to fix anything with a length of fencing wire, a hammer and a piece of 2 x 4.In this good-humored and affectionate portrayal, author and photographer Mark Thomson peers into the gloom, past the dartboard, the beer fridge, and the piles of timber offcuts, to discover what really goes on between a bloke and his shed!Click here to read an inter

From the Oregonian:Monthly state figures released Monday showed Oregon lost 5,900 construction jobs last month when a winter drop of 3,700 would have been normal. Seasonally adjusted construction employment stood at 98,500 jobs in January -- the first month below 100,000 since March 2006.The national housing crisis appears to have caught up with Oregon, hitting construction workers especially hard. "The economy's slowing," said Dae Baek, deputy state economist, "so despite better affordability of houses, the potential buyers are dwindling."Building permits, which provide a view into the near future, have plunged. Permits for privately owned housing units halved from December 2005 to December 2007,dropping from 2,181 to 1,093, said economist Timothy Duy, University of Oregonadjunct assistan
Aboriginal land claims in BC appear so complex that, given so many other matters that take my time, I seek to find simple principles amidst the details. A full list that I was more than happy to copy/paste from fourzerotwo himself can be found after the break, but some of the highlights of the upcoming update include host migration, kill cam for airstrikes and claymores, and the inclusion of the much talked about “N0M4D” control scheme.

With his stunning seventh-round knockout of undisputed champion Jermain Taylor on Saturday night, Pavlik (32-0, 29 knockouts) suddenly finds himself in control of his immediate future. With two rounds in the Chase for the Nextel Cup Championship complete, I would have thought by this point (after two races…) the chase picture would have looked more spread out considering what happened last season at first race with the lap 3 wreck and most contenders falling or crashing out early, but that wasn’t the case at all and no one expected to see Clint Bowyer pickup his first career victory and in such dominating fashion. When you looked at the other chasers after New Hampshire, just about everyone had really good runs and nothing really changed expect for Bowyers position moved up to fourth in the points. However the opposite happened in Dover, I truly believe that that racetrack is the Monster Mile, it threw everything at the chase drivers including what some would say the kitchen sink, first the crash with Hamlin and Petty were Hamlin just looked like he ran over Petty and including the little fight sort of speck in the garage area, but the second thing, the huge crash
The brains of people with seasonal depression may be too efficient at bundling away a key chemical, a new study suggests.
The finding in people with SAD backs the prevailing theory about the biochemical causes of depression, and could give clues into new ways to treat the condition.

Using magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain, researchers have identified a new abnormality related to disease progression and disability in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a study published in the September issue of Radiology, published by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)."Based on these findings, physicians may be able to diagnose multiple sclerosis more accurately and identify patients at risk for developing progressive disease," said the study's lead author, Rohit Bakshi, M.D., associate professor of neurology and radiology at Harvard Medical School and director of clinical MS-MRI at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Partners MS Center in Boston.MS is a chronic, autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of myelin, the protective layers that surround nerve cells. It can affect numerous body functions, and symptoms may include visual and speech impairment, memory loss, depression, muscle weakness, loss of coordination, numbness, pai
A groundbreaking Minnesota law is shining a rare light into the big money that drug companies spend on members of state advisory panels who help select which drugs are used in Medicaid programs for the poor and disabled.
Those panels, most comprised of physicians, hold great sway over the $28 billion spent on drugs each year for Medicaid patients nationwide. But aside from Minnesota, only Vermont and Maine require drug companies to report payments to doctors for lectures, consulting, research and other services.

In the MBC weekend drama "9 End 2 Outs," she has broken out of her fragile and elegant shell, playing a 30-year-old, foul-mouthed and disheveled spinster. From ihtTORONTO: The latest jitters over global credit markets sent the Toronto stock exchange index down almost 600 points in intraday trading Thursday — its biggest point drop in six years — before recovering some. The S&P/TSX composite index ended the day down 200.06 points, or 1.53 percent, to 12,848.7.Resource stocks were the hardest hit as investors worry that the global credit squeeze could slash demand for commodities."I think people are sort of wondering what the next stage here is (and) what effect is it going to have on global growth," said CIBC World Banks senior economist Peter Buchanan."I think we're also seeing some evidence, perhaps, that hedge funds are doing some selling. There may be cases where they earlier bought some of the resource stocks, some of the mining stocks and the prospect for potential takeovers down the road and now for one reason or another ... they're selling those stocks."The drops in Toronto and New York followed similarly steep losses in
This weekend I am looking forward to, as for the first time in god knows how long I’ve got a weekend of fun frolics planned.
The main hub of it is Ian and Ste are coming to visit, and we are going to watch the Cricket in Colwyn Bay. As it stands, the score is Northants on 115-6, chasing Glamorgan’s 465 with two days left to play. Apparently it’s a good batting pitch in the Bay, so who knows.
The one thing I am scared about is the weather, as it could spoil the cricket.
Anybody know if beercans conduct electricity?
Oh well, if it’s threatening tomorrow morning, then we shall head to watch The Mighty Seagulls take on The Marines instead, with the promise of Liverpool/Aston Villa clash in the early evening. We’re having our new home kit this weekend too, so wouldn’t mind to see that.
Following that, we are all meeting up for Sibley’s birthday celebrations in Llandudno. This will be interesting, as it’s probably one of the first times
Surprising findings by Queen’s researchers have shed new light on how the “sunshine vitamin” D – increasingly used to treat and prevent cancer and other diseases – is broken down by our bodies.
“The effectiveness of vitamin D therapy is partly dependent on how quickly it will be broken down,” says Biochemistry professor Glenville Jones, an expert in the field of vitamin D metabolism. “By studying the enzyme responsible for breaking down the vitamin, we hope to develop a way to prevent this from happening by blocking that response.”
First observed in Dr. Jones’s lab by undergraduate Biochemistry student Brendan O’Leary, the discovery reveals that changing a single amino acid in the hydroxylase enzyme will cause it to take a completely different pathway. Although scientists have known for 25 years that the enzyme is capable of taking two different pathways, until now they could not explain why this occurs.
Earlier study of the enzyme had shown that its pathway
If you’re like most people, you’ve probably experienced a shoulda-woulda-coulda moment; a time when we lament our missteps, saying that we should have invested in a certain stock, should have become a doctor instead of a lawyer and so on.
Psychologists refer to this process, in which we evaluate how we would do things differently, as “counterfactual thinking” and while it can have a positive spin, more often than not it is a psychological mechanism that causes us to harbor feelings of disappointment and regret.
In order to study counterfactual thinking, researchers are fond of having participants read stories in which the main character makes decisions that will ultimately doom him or her to failure and then ask these same participants how they would have done things differently.
But this method may not provide a complete picture of this mental process. New research published in the June issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychologi

Portsmouth v Arsenal Match Preview
There has been a general feeling of late amongst Arsenal supporters of emptiness and boredom that would normally be attributed to being an Aston Villa or Everton fan. With the side having been left with nothing to play for in the past several weeks it really has felt like Arsenal are lodged somewhere in mid-table obscurity. In fact folks, they’re not, and a positive result on Sunday against Portsmouth could see Arsenal finish as high as third in Premiership. And, as Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has pointed out, things could be so much better if he could get rid of all the Blackburns, West Hams and Sheffield Uniteds of the league.
“If you make a table of the top 10 we are second, three points behind Man Utd. If you make a table of the top 20 we are 25 points behind the leader.”
In fact, if the table included just the top four clubs - Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal - things would be even better.
“If you ma

The talented songwriters behing The Sheds are back with a new CD this month. It is titled “You’ve Got A Light” and is another example of their maturing talents. Chris and Cam have been able to put their heads down and write some great music since they began collaborating in 2005. From the utterly hilarious to the sobering and honest, The Sheds music covers it all. And I know I have said this in the past, but you have to appreciate when two guys can pour their hearts out on paper, sweat over the recordings and arrangements and then make it all available to you, the listener, for free, no strings attached. And that is just what The Sheds continue to do, because deep down they know you will become a fan, if only exposed to the music.
The follow up to “The Sheds Quit Smoking” is a much more consistent effort for the band. While Quite Smoking had a couple songs that clearly stood above the rest, this record seems to flow in a more steady direction. And w

After Brenda Priddy and friends caught the 1-Series in an all-out photo shoot in the American Southwest, we're more convinced than ever that the 1-Series will hit US shores, and soon.[Source: Autoblog via Edmunds]Continued- Article, full imageThe 1-Series' price will likely be slotted in between the MINI Cooper and the 3-Series, with some speculation that indicates that the 300 HP, twin-turbo 3.0L may find its way under hood. That kind of power coming packed into a small, RWD vehicle from Bavaria is almost guaranteed to be a fantastic drive. To keep the BMW cachet in the US alive and well, we doubt the normally-aspirated four-cylinder model sold in Europe will come here anytime soon. That is, until BMW develops a new turbo-four.http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline/2496
Intro: "These findings provide a link between RNA silencing and the earliest mechanisms of RNA transcription - perhaps shedding light on both the origins of RNA replication (and therefore life) and the evolution of RNA silencing".
By PLoS Biology: RNA silencing - also known as RNA interference* - is an intriguing phenomenon in which short, double-stranded RNA "triggers" can prevent the expression of specific genes. First discovered in plants, RNA interference is now recognized as a widespread, if not ubiquitous, phenomenon, and it is causing great excitement as an experimental technique for selectively blocking gene expression.
The mechanisms of RNA silencing have been intensively studied. One important step is the formation of single-stranded RNA pieces (called siRNAs) from the double-stranded triggers. In "lower" organisms - including plants, protozoa, fungi, and nematode worms - it also involves an enzyme - called RNA-dependent RNA polymerase - that can generate a strand of RNA usi
In the history of life on earth, one intriguing mystery is how plants made the transition from water to land and then went on to diversify into the array of vegetation we see today, from simple mosses and liverworts to towering redwoods.A research team led by University of Michigan evolutionary biologist Yin-Long Qiu has new findings that help resolve long-debated questions about the origin and evolution of land plants. The work has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Two major steps kicked off the chain of events that helped land plants prosper, forming the basis for modern land-based ecosystems and fundamentally altering the course of evolution of life on earth, said Qiu. The first step was the colonization of land by descendents of aquatic plants known as charophyte algae. That event opened up a vast new world where the sun's intensity was undiminished by passage through water and where carbon dioxide - another essential ingredient for plant life -
