Yesterday we went to the Shanghai Zoo, it supposed to be the biggest one in China and yes! it was big!. There were allot of different animals: Giant Panda's, wolves, bears and much more. The living environment for the animals are not really like the Zoo's you would see in Europe. Allot of visitors scare the animals by screaming and knocking on the glass if not they try to food the poor thing with
After 10,5 hours of flying we finally arrived in the city of Shanghai. At the airport we took the Maglev train to go to Long Yang Road Station, it took about 8 minutes at a speed of 430 km/ph to get there. We then took a taxi to our hostel, I was so smart to NOT bring the adress of our hostel in Chinese haha. Luckily I received a confirmation sms from Hostelworld.com which also contained the numbe

Shanghai. It’s hard to imagine how this once humble fishing village at the mouth of the Yangzte River grew into China’s biggest city and the eighth largest city in the world. And yet it has become the pride of China in more ways than one – a sprawling, progressive city with a proud, resplendent past. An epicenter for art and culture as much as it is for commerce. Yes, this cosmopolitan city

… is not McDonald’s. You can breathe now :). This shot was taken in Shanghai and for one second I really thought they were talking about McDonald’s. Shanghai may be quite Western-friendly in terms of restaurants (all the usual burger brands are there), Chinese food is still the most eaten there.
We just went to New Yeah Shanghai New Yeah Shanghai last night for my dad's birthday. It was my favorite place for soup dumplings for a long time but the reign has ended. Sadly, the dough is now thicker, the meat a bit stiffer. The dough on the pork and chive dumplings has gotten too thick as well. The other dishes we got were mostly too salty but still meets the average Chinatown standard, which is pretty good. But in the end, without the super soup dumplings, Lon and I agreed, they were no longer special. You could eat anywhere in Chinatown for a similar meal.We asked the host on our way out if the chef or owner had changed. He told us that the chef was the owner and nothing had changed. Perhaps it was a fluke but none of use were convinced that it was really the same place. All five of

I didn't realize how truly cool one of our Shanghai lunch (and cooking class) stops was until I got back and read how truly cool it was. I did learn from Michelle, our superb guide, that the Whampoa Club is in a most noteworthy building, which includes Jean-Georges’ Shanghai outpost. It’s at No.3 the Bund and was built for an insurance company in 1916 and is China’s first steel building. Its award winning renovation by Michael Graves (his first project in China) was finished in 2004.A particularly interesting thing about this building is that it is the only one in Shanghai that is owned outright by a foreigner, Chinese-American Handel Lee. All the rest are leased by the government. A BUILDING may owned by the homeowner, but the LAND that it sits on is leased from the government for u
It’s not often (actually, it's never happened before) that I stay away from blogging for so long, but this Asian cough or whatever finally did me in. Just don’t get too close to the screen and you should be fine.My Shanghai adventures included a wonderful tour by an expatriate art expert, Michelle, who took us to see the Bund, Shanghai’s most famous street and district, and gave our little group an excellent historical, artistic and architectural appreciation for the area. In some ways, the history of this one street is really a microcosm of Chinese history during the late 19th and 20th centuries – from the Opium Wars through the Cultural Revolution to China today - and it is fascinating. We took a local ferry to get there, which I admit I was a bit apprehensive about. Gosh, are you
