I wish I can sew with a sewing machine
So that I don't have to sew with a needle. It can be back breaking and needs a lot of eye detail too. My eyesight is not as impeccable anymore. Is there a better way to sew a badge onto the uniform? The adhesive doesn't work that well, still need stitching to have it well-attached onto the uniform. Now, my skills are tested further when H gave me his Boy Scout uniform to have all those badges sewn.

2008 Fashion Trends for Sewing Projects
By: Elmo Kandel It's always fun to look at the latest issue of Vogue and other fashion and decorating magazines, and see what the latest upcoming styles will be. This helps us home sewers get good ideas for things we can make to wear and for decorating our homes. Keeping up with fashion is a good idea for all sewers because it insures that your sewing items are current to the times and will be able to be used for the longest period of time possible. The look coming in Spring 2008 appears to be a throw-back to the 1950's. Such items as high heeled pumps, slim skirts, large belts, and loose blouses with puffy collars and sleeves appear to be becoming all the rage once again. It appears that the days of butts hanging out of low-rise jeans are ending and a more sophisticated look is returning to the mainstream. For many of us, this couldn't have come at a better time; unless you are a six foot tall pencil, the fashions of 2007 just aren't that flattering. Some of the latest staples

Look Your Best at the Beach or in Pilates Class by Sewing Your Own Swimsuit & Leotard
A wide range of pattern styles is available. Styles with princess seams are slenderizing. So are patterns with a center panel of a contrasting color; to minimize hips, use a dark color for the side panels. High-cut leg openings on swimsuits and leotards give the appearance of longer legs and a slimmer torso. For a full-busted figure, choose a pattern with a bustline shaped by darts or seams. To fill out a slender figure, use a pattern with shirring, draping, or ruffles. Or choose a simple pattern style and a splashy printed fabric to enhance a slender figure.By sewing your own swimsuits and leotards, you can make garments that meet your needs. Add a full-front lining to a swimsuit, if desired; this is especially important for light-colored and lightweight fabrics. Or you may line just the

Easy Sewing Pattern Alteration for Full Hips
You might think so, but it could be one of two things: large hips or a small waist. A quick look in the mirror will tell the story. If your hips are large in proportion to the upper part of your body, then full hips are the problem. If your hips are in proportion to the upper part of the body, but the waist appears small, then the problem lies in your waist. If your waist is small, the garment's waist can be reduced by increasing the width of darts and pleats. If your hips are large, the pattern needs to be increased at the side seam in the hip area.Read More...

Hi sewing friends, Being the new kid on the block, I had to start from scratch, so I wandered around town looking for sewing magazines, fabric and notion stores. I found a few fabric stores but I have a feel there is more… The good news is that I can get sewing magazines at the newsstand. I can get Burda Moden, Burda Easy Fashion and Ottobre Design. It gets even better. Some sewing magazines sell in Italian which is much easier for me to understand then in German. Burda Moden sells for €3,60 while Burda Easy Fashion (I found it only in German) sells for €6. Unfortunately I can not get the Threads magazine here. I was hoping they import Pattrones but it turns out they don’t. If someone is interested in getting Burda Moden, Easy Fashion or Ottobre Design I’ll be very happy to mail them for Threads or Pattrones. My sewing space…
I am almost finished fixing up my sewing space downstairs in our guest room… The office and the guest room have been sore spots since we moved in here. It has been a rare occasion that they have stayed clean and uncluttered… actually… I don’t think that they ever have…. With the water heater disaster… and now new floors and being able to start out new, I have made a nice little sewing space. Simon uncluttered a lot of his clothes and his dresser is now in the closet and out of view. The bed frame was broken so we put that in the garbage and now the mattresses are on the floor, which may not be ideal but it will have to do. My sewing table fits perfectly and I have space to work without cluttering the office space up. I also got rid of a lot of scraps and placed all my material in a bureau that used to be in the kitchen… About 2 months ago I found a junior size dress form for 15$…. and last night I had an idea… I put some ba

One of the great things about crafting is that you can save money by making your own items or, if you are good enough, you can even turn your craft into a small business and make some money. Of course, when you are starting out with a new hobby you are likely to make some mistakes and create items that you can be proud of but that you won't find at eye-level in your local fashion outlet just yet

Shading, Sewing, Detailing, 3-D Piecing and Attaching Felts
After posting my latest layout titled "Out Of Shell", some of my forum friends would liked to know more about the technique used. This is actually an extension on my topic "Felt Piecing in Layouts" in my tips and tricks section. Therefore, I've thought of posting it here so that all my blog readers would also get to know more about the technique. I will answer those questions by referring to my felt piecing work in the picture below: Shading felts:I've used some fabric markers to shade my felt in my flower felt piecing before sewing or attaching it to the layout. You can also used some permanent art markers as long as they are not water based. This will add depths to the overall look of the flower.Sewing felts: I've used embroidery threads (ie. DMC) for almost all my scrapbooking work. It comes in great variety of colours and it is softer and won't tear your paper easily. It is definitely great for sewing very fragile and soft materials such as felts.Detailing felts:In my layou

      No Sewing Required, Just Click!
I'm way envious of people who can sew. My mom tried to teach me when I was in grade school, but the only thing I ended up making was sucky beanie baby-esque things for one my brother's 1st grade projects. I have tons of patterns for clothes I was going to make, but that fell through; I can't even figure out how to thread the bobbin anymore. My mom is a great seamstress. She has made dresses for both me and Blythe for homecoming and she made the skirt of my first prom dress after an unfortunate internet shopping experience. This envy tends to steer me to clothing companies that remake vintage clothes like the one Eve Chrust created called eve*lynn. I think being able to take something you find at a thrift store or Salvation Army and make it totally stellar is something everyone should learn to do. Eve started selling eve*lynn to classmates in 2004. She ran her business right out of her college dorm room, and just last year started her first RTW line. She likes to experiment with dif

Singer Sewing Presser Foot Videos - By Singer!
Hey, look what I found: Videos on the SingerCo site that feature their various presser feet. There are a number of presser feet featured, with different videos for different uses on some feet. I can’t hear anything, is it my system or do these old vids not have a sound track? They annoyingly posted them for QuickTime (I hate how QuickTime tries to take over my machine, like this time it said that some MIME type was assigned to another program -duh, I hate QT). However, I suspect I’ll be happy that the Sew and Surge foot video is posted. I recently bought the product and am looking for a chance to try it out. You can also shop for the right Singer presser foot on my site ;).

      Singer Sewing Machine Tutorials
I’m working on more tutorials. The first two are already uploaded to Google Video. Although I originally posted the first one on YouTube as well, I was spammed within one week by ickly people, so I deleted my account. I’ve since also posted the video on Yahoo Video and AOL’s video posting as well. I still need to post the second one on those systems.  Please let me know what other tutorials are really important for you to get going on your Singer sewing machine.

We're one of Ten Best Sewing Blogs!
Guess what? The Wandering Quilter has been named one of the Ten Best Sewing Blogs: Learn to Sew and Sew like a Pro or for Fun written by Slate Stone and published on Associated Content, the People’s Media Company. How exciting! There’s power in numbers, and knowledge to be shared, so the more of us who gather here, the more we can learn from each other. I discovered this morning I have no batting the right size for my charm square quilt, so a trip to town is in order, I’d like to finish the quilt up and start on another. I might look for more flannel for PJ’s… but save it in case I get that serger anytime soon… like next week maybe?

      Shopping and sewing
I've been spending again, but I think I'm about there with the Christmas presents. Except I need something for my Grandparents - I don't think I can do the calendar idea after all. Having dropped into Hobby Craft yesterday on my way back from the work thing I went back over again this afternoon for more stuff. I bought a cross stitch magazine yesterday which has a 3-D nativity scene which I am now aiming to make before Christmas so I needed some more threads for that, and there were some designs which were suggested for the top of wooden boxes you can buy. The boxes cost about £15 though, so I am going for compact mirrors instead which should look nice but are pretty straightforward to make. Especially now I have a bit more time.Driving over this afternoon it looked like a rainbow was erupting from the road somewhere straight ahead of me. I remember when I was a kid I made up stories involving climbing the rainbow. Probably inspired by My Little Pony or the Carebears or something l

Make Money Sewing Accessories for Dogs!
I just read in a recent issue of Pet Product News that knitting sweaters for dogs is a new "HOT" item! So if you know how to knit why not try it. You might make some extra money or be able to add to it and create a whole new line of items for dogs. If you sew you could make jackets, make gourmet doggie treats, and the list can go on. I did some searching and I found a website that has a few FREE patterns for some dog clothing and accessories. CANINE CRAFTS. This could turn into a cool work at home career. In the search box below you can do a search for more pet crafts and ideas!!Enter your search termsSubmit search form

Sewing Stretch Jersey posted by soggy.moggy
Hi all! Please help! I'm trying to sew a top from a book (Making Stuff: An alternative craft book by Ziggy Heanor ISBN: 1094772617) using stetch jersey fabric. I'm fine with everything the instructions up to where they say to use stretchy iron-on (fusible) interfacing on the edges of the garment before sewing it up using a straight stitch... Must I use interfacing? I can't get the stetchy type anywhere and wondered if i used a narrow zig-zag stitch instead whether that would be ok? Failing that I have normal non-stretchy iron-on interfacing... Feel like just using zig-zag stitch and going for it... Please help - my local dressmaking shop was rude to me - don't think they like beginners much :( Many thanks AmyLast post by Sherril Miller at Thu 12 Jul 2007 09:12:46 AM Total posts: 6 Visit PatternReview.com to read this entire topic.Take a PatternReview.com Sewing Class today.
