For Indians, one of the most auspicious days on the monthly calendar is marked by Sankranti - the day on which the sun moves from one sign of the zodiac to the other. Of all such days, it it the day of Makar Sankranti that is believed to be the most holy. This is because it is on this day that the sun returns to the Northern Hemisphere thereby marking the end of a long cold winter and the return of spring. As it is in the month of Magha that the sun enters the Makar Rashi or sign on the zodiac known as Capricorn, this Sankranti is known as Makar Sankranti. The terms come quite literally from the fact that the sun leaves the Tropic of Cancer and enters the Tropic of Capricorn. The ensuing period i

While they don't have a problem having troubled buyers calling up a toll free number and opening up their financial books as if it were a therapy session, they want to keep a lid on what is going on with troubled banks: "Some market observers suggested that banks would likely be to able to avoid the so-called stigma associated with the discount rate and borrow money through the auction process at a lower rate than the discount rate" After all, you wouldn't want to hang out with a schizophrenic bank and have your friends and family start whispering behind your back. Here's how to get to Sesame Street
I loved Sesame Street when I was a kid. We didn't have television while I was growing up, so I was only able to watch at Grandma and Grandpa's house, which of course just added to that wonderful homemade-cookies excitement of visiting Grandparents. But I remember old school Sesame Street. I remember back when Big Bird was the only one who could see Snuffleupagus, and I remember when Mr. Hooper ran the soda shop. I remember the shock I had when, while visiting my Grandparents, I discovered that Snuffleupagas had become one of the gang, and that Mr. Hooper had died. These changes stand out in the memories of my childhood as markers, early lessons in change and loss, and things outside of your control. When I couldn't be watching, I was still listening. My all-time favorite record was the Bert and Ernie Sing-a-long, featuring Bert in the bathtub while the whole street shows up in the bathroom to sing away his suds. I still have a copy of this which I, um, still love to listen to

The New Sesame Street DVD's Are Not for Kids
The Bryant Park Project, November 15, 2007 · Early episodes of Sesame Street are being released on DVD — with a warning that they are intended for grown-ups and may not suit the needs of today's preschoolers.Virginia Heffernan of the New York Times blog The Medium went looking for Big Bird, and found that his neighborhood has essentially been gentrified for a new generation of viewers. "I definitely had dimly remembered that something in the palette of the show was really unnerving — both unnerving and thrilling," she says. "I watched it from a small town, and it made me think of, you know, 'New York's mean streets!' "The vintage Sesame Street characters couldn't make on T.V. today, she argues. Just look at Oscar the Grouch, a fellow who lives in a garbage, gets no help with his obvious emotional problems and shows no ambition to better his station in life. Gone, also, are the parodies of PBS programing and scenes of puppets smoking pipes. And then there's the question of pa

Sesame Street - Not For Kids?
I saw a report on the news about the early seasons of Sesame Street coming out on DVD.  According to the report, the videos contain a warning that they are intended for adults and not suitable for children.  What?  The news report went on to detail the possible bad influences on children like; Oscar the grouch suffering from untreated depression, the Cookie Monster being on the fast track to diabetes, and the poor living conditions of Bert and Ernie’s basement apartment.  I haven’t seen the label myself, this is just what I saw on the segment. What is the world coming to!  bookmark:

Taking a stand on Sesame Street
I’ve written before about my love for the original, unadulterated Sesame Street of my childhood, and how Simon and I have spent hours enjoying the old clips - first on YouTube and then on our Sesame Street Old School DVD collection. I’ve even added the latest collection (Old School: 1974 to 1979) to my Christmas wish list. Not Simon’s wish list, mind you. Mine. What I didn’t notice was that apparently somewhere on the DVD collections there is a disclaimer that states: “These early ‘Sesame Street’ episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child.” Seriously? I mean, you only have to watch some of those old episodes to see how they are fundamentally different - and, IMHO, far richer - than what’s available on PBS today. But not suitable for a preschool child? What, because of the psychedelic colours, the folky music, the blissful naivety, the 1970s peace-and-love groove? Granted, it’s a litt

      Sesame Street Spooktacular
Wake up early, pack up the car with ever conceivable snack, drink, and toy combination to make any child happy on a long drive and you have my Saturday. Last week Jodi and I decided to take advantage of our Season Pass at Sesame Place and go on a day trip. Usually I am weary of doing a day trip like this because Sesame Place is not exactly the closest place for us to go. Leaving early to drive for few hours with the knowledge that your child is not exactly going to enjoy being stuck in the car is enough to make most intelligent parents wish for a sedative (for themselves). So we go, and Eli is a champ on the way, no whining, no complaining. We are stuck listening to Laurie Berkner the entire time but that is okay (except when Eli won’t let us sing - I guess we sound horrible). I have delusions of grandeur when I think of what Sesame Place could do to decorate for Halloween. I am thinking of spooky to the core with no expense skipped to make the place a fantastic Halloween experie

      Sesame Chicken
This was done some time back. I bought some (skinless) chicken breast meat from the super market. I knew my son won't like it because they are skinless (he likes the skin) so I did this instead. The sesame seed gave a nice aroma to the bland chicken.Ingredients: 2 Chicken Fillet or Breast Meat Batter (Flour with water) Sesame Seed 1/2 tablespoon Light Soy Sauce 1 teaspoon Chinese Cooking Wine Oil for frying How to do it: Marinate the chicken with light soy sauce and wine for an hour. Dip the chicken in batter and coat with sesame seeds. Deep fry in low heat till the sesame seeds turn golden brown. Remove and drain the oil. Cut in slices and serve with your dipping sauce. Note:I served it with my Sweet and Spicy Sauce. Click HERE for printer-friendly version of an original recipe.http://feeds.feedburner.com/wokkingmum

      Sesame Place - Day 2
IMG_0134, originally uploaded by BlueK9. The picture says it all. Eli had such a good time on the second day at Sesame Place. Some kids are scared of giant characters walking around but not Eli, he wanted nothing more than to be face to face with Ernie, Bert, Big Bird, Grover and Elmo. We decided to test Eli’s bravery from the moment we got into the park. The closest ride to the entrance is this massive river ride that turns the riders from dry to wet. There are nice sized drops in elevation and waterfalls that dump all over the riders who are sitting in a circular raft. From the moment you sit down you are immediately drenched due to drainage holes (more like flooding holes) that circle the base of the raft. I jumped in and Jodi handed Eli to me. He was geared up in a life jacket and didn’t seem nervous at all about the entire thing until I sat him on my lap and he got all wet. Immediately he said NO but it was too late, we were heading down and around the first be

Sesame Street’s thirty-eighth season premiere is today
Who doesn’t love a little Sesame Street?? That’s right, the show is entering its thirty-eighth season today, including stars such as Tina Fey, Chris Brown, Brian Williams and more: Sesame Street remains (thankfully) true to its roots. Sure, there have been a few tweaks necessitated by changing times: You might notice that the famous theme song (”Come and play…”) has been given hip-hop and jazzy under-rhythms. But the show’s core mission — introducing (and making familiar) to children the educational building blocks of letters, words, and numbers — is alive and well, accomplished in a way that never talks down to children and still manages to amuse their parents. A Muppet with an uncanny likeness to David Caruso leads the ”RSI: Rhyme Scene Investigation” skit, and viewers are encouraged to test their own rhyming abilities. Tune your ass in on PBS or wherever delivers quality children’s television in your neighborhood. C IS FO

RECALL: Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, other children's toys
Fisher-Price issued a recall of several licensed character toys today, about 967,000 of them. The involved toys were manufactured between April 19, 2007 and July 6, 2007 and sold in the U.S. from May 2007 through August 2007.The recalled toys contain excess lead in the surface paints and could cause lead poisoning in children--manufacturer: China.I've been seeing many recalls due to lead poisoning, and most of them are produced in China. I don't know China's production policies, but until they stop producing products containing lead these many recalls should be loud signs that it's time for the U.S. to stop using China to manufacture their products.Having had a child lead poisoned at a young age from lead paint, I can't understand why China continues to allow products with lead off their assembly lines when they are aware of the health hazards to people. (They must be aware with the number of lead recalls in the past few years.) Do they really use these products themselves thinkin

Stevie Wonder's amazing performance on Sesame Street
Whenever anyone asks me what I like to listen to when I get stressed or catch a case of the blues... I often will tell them Stevie Wonder. It just doesn't get a better than Stevie Wonder. Period. I kind of felt like that today. Nothing serious though - just a little frustrated. So, I turned on this utterly incredible video of Stevie Wonder and his band playing Sesame Street in '73.Watch the video and check these cats out. Utterly insane. I challenge you to name one musician or group better than this today. Don't hold your breath.Superstition live on Sesame Street.1973Can you name the players? I have a few listed here, I think - but not all. You are invited to make suggestions and/or corrections. Do your best - the picture quality isn't the best - but the music record is sensational! The Band: Keys and Vocals – Stevie Wonder; Guitar - Ray Parker; Bassist - Anthony Jackson; Drums - Ollie Brown. Wine and Food: Vegetable Platter with Curry & Sesame Dip
My Wines Direct features great recipes to augment their incredible wines. Enjoy this recipe for a Vegetable Platter & Dips to go along with the Merk Pinot Grigio. These light and lively yogurt based dips are a refreshing change from the usual. They can be made the the night before serving. As for the wine… Friuli, in the northeast of Italy, is considered by many to be the home of the country’s best whites - it’s cooler than further down the boot, and the area’s rolling hills create, good drainage and sun exposure so grapes ripen well. The Merk Pinot Grigio exemplifies the local style with its aromas of lemon, almond, and minerality; light-bodied and crisp, it’s refreshing and a perfect aperitif. View Recipe at My Wines Direct

      Tortilla Wraps For Sesame Pancake
There are a few variations of Asian/Chinese wraps that I crave for from time to time. The Nanjing crispy scallion pancake, Taiwanese pancake beef roll ups, and the ever popular Chinese Moo Shu wrap. I guess today was one of those days when I needed an escape from rice and noodles, so some kinda pancake wrap it is. Well I certainly didn't really feel like going out and getting something too greasy nor did I feel like rolling out some pancake dough. Maybe a simple chinese pancake recipe to conveniently finish up some leftover tortilla wraps will suffice. For the health-conscious, there are actually low-carb tortilla skins (which are the kind I used). This isn't exactly the traditional way of making Asian pancake wraps, but after a light coating of egg white wash and toasted seame seeds and a quick pan-fry, I definitely find myself preferring this over the thick chinese sesame pancake bread or the fragile thin Moo Shu wraps. As for the filling, I went with some slow-cooked boneless beef s

‘Sesame Street’ in US bid to court Indonesians
Tantan the orangutan and Jabrik the Javan rhino are among four new characters due to appear in an Indonesian version of the TV show ‘Sesame Street’ — part of US-funded efforts to win hearts and minds in the Muslim nation. The local version of the children’s show, called ‘Jalan Sesama’, which translates directly as Everyone’s Street, is beginning production in Jakarta and expected to air later this year after contracts with Indonesian stations are secured. The US Agency for International Development had earlier set aside $8.5 million for 156 episodes, part of $157 million pledged in 2003 by the Bush administration for education in Indonesia, which Washington regards as a key voice of moderation and democracy in the Muslim world. But the other two new characters — Momon, a 5-year-old boy who likes math and drawing, and Putri, a 3-1/2-year-old girl with a healthy dose of curiosity — bear a closer resemblance to Elmo and Ernie from the original show.To help draw in Indonesi

      Sesame Fish Balls
As I already had all that groundnut oil from deep-frying the Potato and Pea Pasties I decided to try out this tasty looking fish ball recipe. It was very cheap to make as I just used odd shaped Pollock fillets as it's all getting blended anyway. Really quick to make too.My sister reckoned they would taste even better with some sweet chilli sauce, but we didn't have any, and by then I was busy with the Thai Red Curry and so didn't get around to making any. Definitely a tasty snack, hot or cold, but should be eaten the same night as otherwise they're likely to go soft, although they taste fine the next day, they're nothing like as nice.Recipe for the Sesame Fish Balls250g White Fish Fillets2 cups Breadcrumbs2 tablespoons Plain Yoghurt1 clove of Garlic, crushed1 small Red Onion2 tablespoon
