This afternoon I finished my workday close enough to downtown so that I could make it to Thanksgiving Square before it closed at 5pm. In case you didn't read my previous post, Thanksgiving Square is sort of place downtown where people can meditate. I don't know the correct word for this, but there's also a multi-religion chapel there, too. Any faith is welcome there. For a place like this to exist in the middle of one of the most conservative cities in the USA is pretty cool. Actually, it's very cool. A man at the bar proposes a toast on this special day, Unification Day, when the aligned planets ended the “scumbag Independents.” Mal, of course, picks a fight with the man, relegating the dirty work to Zoë who is very adept at using the butt of her shotgun. The hitch? This bar is an Alliance-friendly bar… a full-on brawl breaks out, Mal and Zoë against everyone else (Jayne didn’t fight in the war, so he decides to just watch).
At this point in the episode, we know we are not in a Western movie. Zoë and Mal get thrown out of the saloon’s holographic window with the backdrop of three moons in the sky. It is also important to note here that our heroes fight dirty. It is not above them to throw sand in the eyes of an opponent.

In the kitchen, Simon tells the story of River to the crew of Serenity. His story is juxtaposed with shots of him treating River in the infirmary. He first speaks of himself: how brilliant he was in medical school and so on. He does this to illustrate how smart River is; that she made him look like an "idiot child" He says that River was "more than gifted: she was a gift"
Her family sent River, then 14, to a special school sponsored by the Alliance. It was an exciting program and she wanted to go. After a while, communication stopped. After several months of no contact, Simon got a strange coded letter from River. Deciphered, the letter said "they're hurting us" For two years, Simon searched for River. The following is the first installment in a series on the television show Firefly This review will be quite long because of all the exposition, but subsequent entries will be shorter and expand more on the philosophy and theory behind the characters from the point of view of a woman. Now, I am not going to go all feminist on you. It is just a fact that I am, indeed, a woman. I am also a friend, a mother, a wife, a sister, a daughter, and a fangirl. I hope that some of my insight will ring true to those other fangirls out there who long for well-written scripts, beautiful cinematography, strong female (and male) characters, and most importantly, relevance.

Christians believe that their holy text, the Bible, is the inerrant word of God. They believe it can be referred to as a complete guide on how to live your life and secure salvation. However, the religion has also produced an abundance of extra-biblical teachings and doctrines. Many of these reflect the cruelty and intolerance that dominate the Bible, but, just as the Bible has some teachings and values that we should proudly uphold and defend, so the post Biblical teachings have messages worth listening to, and I believe in giving credit where it is due. One such lesson worth saving, is the Prayer of Serenity.
The prayer was written by the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr in the 1930’s or early 1940’s. There is some dispute over the exact original text, but bar a few details of wording, the structure is always the same. This version may be cropped from the original, but is probably the most popular version in circulation today:
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can
Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family–squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.
