The second of many Korean designer interviews to come.On day two of the last Seoul Fashion week I had a chance to ask men's wear designer Choi Bum Suk some questions. I got a chance to get backstage after his runway show, so there is some noise in the background because they were breaking things down and setting up for the next show. My apologies. Here is the link on FMS: Korean Designer Profiles

By: Marilyn Surrounded by mountains, Seoul is a vibrant and fascinating city with a population of about 10 million. This ancient city has been the capital of Korea since the 14th century.Wea

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's worst outbreak of bird flu has spread to the capital with agriculture ministry officials saying on Tuesday four dead birds raised at a Seoul district government office had tested positive.South Korea has confirmed 24 cases of the deadly H5N1 strain in poultry in about a month. It has killed more than 5 million chickens and ducks but that has not stopped the virus from spreading at its fastest rate since the country reported its first case in 2003.The four birds were among 57 chickens, ducks and turkeys raised in pens at the district office in the eastern part of Seoul. The ministry said it would take about a day to confirm if the dead birds had contracted the H5N1 strain. The city had culled all the birds at the site and was limiting access to a nearby zoo an

Listen to Samples This unique album presents Kim Hye-Ran's magnificent Goot performance. Goot is a Korean shamanistic ritual done since ancient times to wish for a town's peace and a family's well-being. It's a symbol of Korean culture and shamanistic tradition. Goot mainly consists of music and dance. The main element of Goot is the female shaman, who sings and dances with food offerings. She asks ghosts to control the turbulence of life. Goot has a number of types and differs by region. The Goot in this album is the one of Seoul, which developed as a national Goot held in the royal court.

Some of the more worthy of note are wine tasting events put on by Dan Schulte, CEO of Pieroth Wines, Korea.Considering that I use wine tasting events to prove that Seoul is moving up in the culture ranks, imagine my excitement when I heard that there was a new wine bar in Seoul. Last Saturday before maedeup class we decided to check out the Maedeup Museum in Seoul. It is very near Insadong which is the arty, crafty part of Seoul. We found this street that still had the old Korean homes, most of which have been torn down to make way for the high rises. The museum was up this street.Even the roofs are a work of art.Oh, here it is. It's a good thing my friend Hellena called to get exact directions.Lots of eye candy. I told Curt (hubby), "Take of picture of this. Did you get a picture of this?" This was after Hellena made sure it was okay to take pictures. The items on this tray were for sale. We just couldn't get enough of this museum. It was only one small room but there was a lot of maedeup packed into it. We were so surprised at how many of the knots we re
Yesterday I was just tired and so ready for it to be over. I think I wouldn't have been so tired if it wasn't basically a week of me having two jobs. I was at work teaching in the day and in the evenings I was at the shows and interviewing people. Because the show went through the weekend that means I was there Saturday, Sunday and Monday too (Mondays are my days off.) I'm looking forward to next weekend where I'll make sure to give myself a whole day to myself. Here is a picture of me, Korean signer Park Jeong-hyun and her friend backstage before the last major designer Gee Choon Hee's, 지춘희, show. moi, Lena aka Jeong-hyun Park (박정현), and friendIn the meantime to entertain you, if you don't know who Lena Park is, here is a video from YouTube of her performing the Eagles classic
Today was straight up great at Seoul Fashion Week. I've named it "March of the Bad Asses" in my head.I say this because I saw the Ha Sang Beg, 하상백, show first. And take a look at the video and you should get what inspired me to use the word "march". What a way to start the day. He's all the rage here. He's a former illustrator, turned model, turned TV fashion correspondent, turned designer and he's pretty much doing all of these things simultaneously. That makes him fierce. He had an awesome show. I also scored an interview with him which turned out great. He's fun to talk to. That interview will make its way to the FeetManSeoul site as soon as we can get through all of the great pictures and interviews we've gotten.Since Ha has modeled, he's not shy and he opened the show wit
There is no day five because I didn't go to a show on Friday. Instead, when I left work, I ran home because I'd left my cell phone behind that morning. After writing and answering some emails, I headed out to the other side of town to party and spend time with some of the cool folks I've met this week. That was fun because I rarely spend my time south of the Han River. The group I was with made our way back to my side of town later for a party. However, the end of my evening was showing a journalist I met around the big shopping centers of Dongdaemun and that translated into me not getting to sleep until just before 5am. It was all great fun.I headed back the shows on Saturday and saw a few shows. I took it easy though and out of eight shows I only saw four: Hwang Jae-bock, 황재복

Another partial day for me at Seoul Fashion Week. I got to see two really great shows in the evening, Lee Ju Young, 이주영, and Lie Bong Sang, 이상봉. Both of these designers had exciting and unconventional collections. Lee Ju Young has a love for hard rock music which is apparent in designs and was also apparent in her show. With her clothes you could step out and go to a club or concert. Lie Bong Sang's collection seemed to be like art you can wear. That means some pieces seemed to be more experimental than not, but it was very pretty collection with lots of circle patterns and florals. moi and Lee Ju YoungI had a chance to interview Lee Ju Young and, like the other designer interviews, it will end up on the FeetManSeoul site. Here is video from the end of Lee Ju Young's show.

Like I said, I didn't go to the shows at Seoul Trade Exhibition Center today. However, I did catch Jain Song's, 송자인's, collection at Daily Projects in Apgujeong. Daily Projects is an AMAZING space. At least, it looked nice at night. On the link check the "Garden 1F" page. That gives you wide shots but it still doesn't capture how it looked tonight.During the show my diabetes reminded me that running too much will get me in trouble. My blood sugar crashed in the middle of the show so badly that after the show I had a can of Welch's grape soda in one hand and a can of lemon lime soda in the other, so the best video I have is from the start of the show. Once that insulin reaction hit full force the shots I got were just horrible.
It's late and I have a couple more that aren't ba
I had to work today, so I was only able to make it to a couple of the evening shows at Seoul Fashion Week. I figured today would be really good as it was the last day for men's fashion. It pretty much was.I had a chance to see two shows, Choi Bum Suk, 최범석, and Song Zio, 송지오. I also had a chance to interview both of them. Those interviews will find their way to the FeetManSeoul site soon. The treat was the great fashion but also the celebrities showing up. The problem is I keep a far distance the celebrity thing. I know who my favorites are, but, beyond that, I wouldn't know a Korean celebrity if one was right in front of me. It's happened a few times that I've met someone socially not knowing who they were and the people around me are frantically either trying to act cool
I've spent the whole day running around Seoul. First, just on personal business. However, I got to the Seoul Fashion Week in the afternoon and had the best time. Now I've come to finally admit I'm a horrible photographer. However, someone did take a shot of me and designer Han Seung-soo, 한승수. So I can prove I was there ;)Today was the start of the event and it will go through next Monday. Today and tomorrow will feature men's clothing.Out of the shows I saw today, my love was the "beyond closet" collection by Ko Tae Yong, 고태용. As stated though, I suck at photography, so keep tabs on the FeetManSeoul website for the pictures. Here is the start of the "beyond closet" show. The camera is a hand held and it's askew, so forgive me. But, from it, you can catch a quick glimpse

I have mentioned Seoul Garden Seoul Garden before but that was before we had pictures so I thought I'd give you another run through, since I had lunch there yesterday. Since my last visit, they have replaced their tabletops and printed new menus. It's nice to see that the content has remained the same and the prices too. I believe they have the best prices in K-town, possibly because they are a second floor restaurant and rent is lower.Usually, their panchan is pretty good but yesterday, I felt like it was a bit skimpy and below normal quality. I usually go for dinner so perhaps lunch is not the way to go. Kimchee is a standard part of panchan and it was good. The bean sprouts, another commonly served panchan, was average. The celery was nothing interesting. I always love the dried and fri

A 14th Century gate widely seen as South Korea's most treasured attraction has been ravaged by a fire that broke out late on Sunday.Namdaemun, or the Great South Gate, was the oldest wooden structure in Seoul. It served as the city's main entrance when it became South Korea's capital more than 600 years ago.More than 100 firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze, firing hoses from every angle. But their efforts were not enough to prevent the two-storey superstructure crumbling as the flames ripped through it.By Monday morning, only the stone base of the gate was left. According to initial estimates, it will take three years and $21m to restore.South Koreans spoke of their anguish at losing the gate, which was re-opened to the public two years ago for the first time since 1907.[BBC]

On Saturday night we went out with some friends for some Korean food. There are a surprising number of Korean Restaurants here in Melbourne, although lately I noticed a few have disappeared.
After discovering Seoul Garden on Exhibition St is no longer open, (and the building has probably been flattened by now) we walked back a block and spied the sign for Seoul House, upstairs on the corner of Lonsdale and Russell.
Any vegetarians out there? Any vegetarians out there in South Korea? Recently, one of our coworkers asked us if we'd want to join her at a vegetarian restaurant located at Sinsa Station, near Apgujeong. We decided to make it an adventure and last weekend we made the long trek to eat some...veggies. I have never visited a vegetarian restaurant before, as I am a pure carnivore at heart (Veggies have feelings too when you cut them up...)!Anyways, we finally made it to our destination, a vegetarian restaurant that was recommended by one of the Seoul tourism websites. What we saw when we went in was not very appetizing. We either came at the wrong time of day, or they just weren't busy enough to keep their "buffet" stocked with fresh items. It was not a memorable meal, but since it was only 6000w per person we decided to give it a go anyways! There were four of us in this restaurant on the second floor of a building...along with three others:Here are some pictures of the buffet...you know
As you may remember, one of my interests is the London Underground, so this map caught my eye:Thanks to a blog called Strangemaps. The caption reads“This playful diagram shows all the cities which have, are building or are planning to construct an urban rail system. It is the opening page of a new book about the graphic design of subway, metro, underground and U-Bahn system maps and diagrams.”I like the way the six cities in South Korea with subway systems have been represented as stations on what is the Jubilee line on the London Underground Map and Tokyo is shown at the end of the Central line.Credit for the map goes to Mark Ovenden, author of the book Transit Maps of the World which was published recently by Penguin USA.Here's the real London Underground map to compare it with :Geoff used to have a great collection of spoof London Underground maps, until TFL got the lawyers on to him. Luckily there are plenty of mirror sites of the collection. I wonder what TFL lawyers will have
So wayyy back, the corporation we have all known to love/loathe/hate, Walmart, used to be in South Korea. However, along with Homever, Walmart ended up kicking the bucket. Well, today I'm going to show you another way to buy your puppies in Seoul.I'm not sure if the following way to buy your dog in Korea is actually a good idea, let alone legal. There are lots of sellers that line the subway station exit steps selling puppies--resting in cardboard boxes lined with newspaper. It was shocking to see this, especially during the freezing winter! These things could not have been more than a few weeks old.The following pictures were taken in Myeongdong, where some sellers line up plastic boxes and they are filled with puppies. Most of the time these stands draw a crowd of onlookers, but we didn't see anyone actually buy a puppy. If someone can translate what the signage says, that would be appre

A few months ago we enjoyed the first of BH Production's 'Standup Comedy nights'. Thanks to being on their mailing list I can tell you that in November they are presenting another night of comedy at the B1 Lounge in Itaewon.Don't miss Bryan Erwin and Nathan Timmel for an outstanding night of comedy. Bryan Erwin and Nathan Timmel, two professional comedians in the United States, are being brought over to Korea for a one night only show in Itaewon. Bryan Erwin's comedic appeal is universally apparent: audiences everywhere can identify with his take on life, or as he puts it, "an ongoing series of awkward, uncomfortable moments." His satirical style has been featured at legendary comedy clubs such as the Comedy Store, the Improv, and the Laugh Factory.Nathan Timmel is known for his edgy, observational humour unmercifully directed at contemporary culture and politics. Nathan has entertained audiences at numerous comedy clubs around the world, and looks forward to unleashing his ac

These are some photos I took, before I left Seoul, of the hoardings around the construction site beside City Hall. As I have mentioned before, the Koreans build very high quality hoardings around the building sites and put a lot of effort into making them look attractive. The hoardings beside City Hall are particulary impressive. From a distance it looks just like a normal picture. As you approach you realise it might be some sort of mosaicAs you get closer you see it is made up of small photos.Once you stand beside it you realise how cleverly it has been put together. The artist has used thousands and thousands of different photos, some of them going back to the 1980's of all sorts of places, events and subjects. The photos do not appear to have been altered in any way, and yet they create the picture you see from a distance. It's well worth taking a close up look if you've seen it from a distance. I haven't been able to find out anything about the artist or how they did it so if any
I often visit the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forum website and offer advice to travellers asking about Korea.Today I saw a posting that I thought deserves a wider audience. A group of Koreans have created a small organistion to offer Free guided tours of Seoul. This is from Youngdae Kwon, the organiser's website :Free Tour Guide in Seoul, non professional volunteer organization, was launched for helping overseas visitors experience Korean culture and customs.Free Tour Guide in Seoul offers overseas visitors a free guided tour in and around Seoul, which has a myriad of exciting and appealing attractions.Since we are volunteer guides, our members may not speak your native language perfectly. We can only offer visitors the services at weekends. However, we are full of energy, heart-warming hospitality, and cultural insights. Our latest information ensures that you will have a memorable experience in Seoul.Even if you already live in Seoul, all overseas people are welcome. We may know abou
Today my husband took a "vacation" day to take me to the Seoul International Quilt Festival. It is held October 12th - 14th in the Gymnastics Building on the Olympic Park grounds. The festival features quilters from Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Our Korean language teacher told me about it since his sister owns a quilt store in Seoul and would be attending. He was our guide and got us to the right building. He also introduced us to his sister and a number of other quilters who were attending and who had quilts in the Festival.I met a friend of his sister's who spoke English very well. She had lived in the United States in Oklahoma City and Washington DC. It was while she lived in Washington DC that she discovered quilting. She does her quilts completely by hand and doesn't even own a sewing machine. She told me that she is afraid if she did have a sewing machine, she would be tempted to do a lot less hand stitching. She said that a quilt usually takes her two years to complete. She also t
There are things that you will start to get used to after living in Seoul. You know you're in Seoul when you recognize this sweet tune being played...can anybody guess where this was taken? For the longest time I never realized where the heck it was coming from, but it was from these orange machines:Or how about the following...we stumbled upon these power outlets inside a Starbucks near our work. What's so special about them? Well for starters they have been SEALED shut with a glue gun! We had used them on a previous occasion to plug in the AC adapter for our laptops. However, this time around we found them sealed shut, probably to prevent people from spending all day inside the coffee shop. Anyone care to translate the sign? You know you're in Seoul when the fellow sitting beside you on the subway is enjoying his DMB "handphone"...while you're sitting there bored out of your mind. What to do? Whip out the camera and take a picture of him in secret...smile!
When I was traveling around exploring Seoul, 99% of the time I would always take a camera with me. The 1% I did not take one of my cameras I would always miss out on capturing something neat or interesting! Anyways, the result of always taking my camera with me has resulted in a plethora of excess videos and images that are waiting to be blogged about. It results in a back log of stuff to put up here for y'all to check out.One of my favorite things to do was to capture videos when the time was right. So here are a few miscellaneous videos for your enjoyment. Let's take a look, shall we?Video #1: The Art of Placing Prawns on a Hot Plate - this video was taken during our "ohgyeopsal" dinner (the one that you're never going to hear about...maybe someday). I was making a big deal out of nothing and of course it comes back to bite me when some oil splatters onto my face...doh!Video #2: Car Spinner Turns Your Car Around - this was taken in the parking garage at work. One of the staff was
My biggest craving since moving to Korea has been for Mexican food. Thanks to the Daily Kimchi, we found Mexican food in Korea. By subway, take exit 6 from Gangnam Station and upon leaving the station walk about one kilometer and look for the Tous Les Jours bakery which will be on your left side. Right before the bakery is an alleyway, turn left into the alley and you will see the signs for Dos Tacos. We were there on a Saturday about 3:00pm and it wasn't crowded at all. We sat next to some other Westerners, something you don't see in Suwon everyday. We found a table and were given menus immediately. Then about three minutes later a waiter came to take our order (unusual in Korea, you normally have to wave over the waitstaff). We started to speak in our limited Korean only to find out the waiter spoke perfect English. I was also surprised to hear English being spoken exclusively by Westerners and Koreans alike. It felt really strange to hear all the English. This is my chicken burri
I discovered the Eros Museum of Seoul when I was wandering around the city in the area near the Blue House. It had just opened its doors to the public for the first time on Aug 21st 2007.It is on three floors and has a small but interesting collection of artefacts relating to erotic art in Korea, China, Japan and other Asian countries. As this is a family friendly blog I will not show you the full image..but there are plenty of examples of Japanese 'Shunga' works on display. You will have to go to the museum to see the rest of the picture. The museum is open every day except Monday. Admission is 5,000 won. You may not want to the take the children, unless you want to do a lot of explaining. To get to the museum go to Seoul Selection bookshop and continue walking north towards the Blue House. The museum is on the right hand side of the road. The local bus (number 11) from Gwanghwamun stops fairly close by.The museum printed the name of their website on the flyer, but while they are pa

On my last day in Seoul I visited a number of museums and events. The Seoul Fine Arts Competition was interesting. It was only 2,000 Won to get in and I was brusquely informed that it was "Only Korean, no English". So nothing new there. It was in two halls. The first had some modern art pieces which were quite good. In the second hall were hundreds of scrolls of hanguel and chinese characters. Here's a collage of the photos I took:The exhibition started Aug 21st, but I'm not sure if it's still on or not. If it is still running, it's at the Seoul Museum Annex beside the Seoul Musem of History building.

A Note about This Photo: This is purely a photo of association. In August of 2004, I visited Korea with my friends Shin and Ryan. (Shin emigrated to the US when she was 16. She was dating Ryan--a gringo--back in 2004. I was the decoy. Now that was funny.) Anyhow, this photo is from a cool little place on Jeju Island. (At least, that's where I think I was when I took this. I unfortunately did not keep notes. And although I did have the blog at the time, I didn't blog the trip! Idiot!)

The Damage: £12
The Victim: Me
The Background: So I went to bed at midnight last night. But guess what time I woke up? 11:30 a.m. I would feel pretty good about this (jetlag) except that my friend Kellie says that anyone who sleeps more than eight hours a night is depressed. This makes me slightly obsessive...am I depressed? Am I? (No, but I am just the tiniest bit obsessive compulsive. But not abo
Okay so the previous post I had a video of me walking down the street holding Devante's hand bag to avoid people. That worked like a charm I must say. Anyways, to truly show you how much bumpage can occur in the busy areas of Seoul, check out the following video I dug up from my picture and video archive. I like to call the following activity "Bumper Bodies," a variation of "Bumper Tanks" for those with good memories. This video takes place walking through Myeongdong during a busy Saturday. I held a shopping bag in front of my body and filmed the bag getting hit and bumped as I walked down the street. Sure, some may blame me for not moving too, but just take a look at the beating my bag takes and how many people just stop in front of me and don't move, hehe!I have some more priceless videos that I will be posting later on--videos that made me giggle like a little school girl after watching them again and again, hee hee hee (insert Homer Simpson)!
We arrived safely in Tokyo last week and moved into our new house. Today J:COM installed our internet and telephone connection. It has taken a week from first contact. Not quite as fast and efficient as KT were when we arrived in Korea, but just as easy. The commute to work is quite acceptable: 4 minutes walk to the local station, three stops to Shibuya, then one stop on the Yamanote line. I've barely got time to read more than a few pages of the Japan Times newspaper. I've observed that the total fare deducted from my Suica card for the two journeys is 240 Yen. In the morning both journeys are 120 Yen each, but in the evening the Yamanote trip is only 110 Yen, but the Inokashira line trip is 130 Yen. Strange. The Koreans will be pleased with a letter to the editor in yesterdays paper from William Wetherall reminding the Japanese how much they owe to their friends across The sea that we still can't agree a name for.

With a population sweltering over 12 million, Seoul is a very crowded city. Navigating the sidewalks in Seoul can be treacherous (scooters, cars, ajummas, ajoshis, buses, kids, bikes, taxis, construction, brick sidewalks with missing bricks, etc), especially when it's jam packed and there are sellers lined up and down the street (let's not forget about those Ludacris-inspired ajummas who like to "throw dem bows"). Well, one day in busy Gangnam (fashion central) I decided to try something special. How was I going to walk through crowds in Seoul without getting bumped and bruised?Well, the answer is to hold your girlfriend's purse/handbag in front of you while you're walking (and looking like a Korean mental patient in the process) through crowds. It's just absolute magic how people avoid you like the plague! My Korean friend Tae told me not to go through with this idea, but I did anyways. He's the one holding the camera filming me. Here we go! (this video is being hos
Seoul is a great place to experience a wide variety of spicy yet mouth-watering foods, especially the local cuisine with its distinctive tastes based on garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper powder and fermented soybean paste. Korean dishes, such as bibimpab (vegetables mixed with rice and hot pepper paste, topped with a cooked egg), kalbi (succulent beef ribs marinated in a special sauce, then char-broiled) and kimchi (Chinese cabbage or radish, salted and impregnated with various spices, including red hot pepper powder and pickled fish sauces), are becoming increasingly popular around the world.
Kimchi, in fact, is the country’s staple, accompanying almost every meal. Most of the city’s restaurants, whether high-priced or inexpensive, large or small, serve this popular condiment as a side dish. As many Koreans put it, “A meal without kimchi would be like trying to walk without legs.” The existence of some 200 kinds of Kimchi shows how important it
