In light of the continuing lack of understanding of libertarianism as a philosophy, I decided to make this post. I've said before that I believe libertarianism can be boiled down to one essential sentence which can be expressed in an unbelievable amount of ways. To be sure, there will be exceptions to any such statement where a given libertarian may reach a different result. But any such exceptions amount to acknowledged deviations from "pure" libertarianism. Importantly, libertarianism to me works as well or better as a personal philosophy about life as it does as a philosophy about government. Generally speaking, I think simply living life with relatively libertarian values in your day to day affairs is a valuable way of being a happy, calm, and decent human being.Anyhow, below is m

Nick Hume is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life, until one gruesome night he witnesses something that changes him forever. Transformed by grief, Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that no length is too great when protecting his family.
Death Sentence is a 2007 film loosely based on the 1975 novel by Brian Garfield. The film is directed by Saw director James Wan, and stars Kevin Bacon as Nick Hume, a man who becomes a vengeful vigilante killer after his son is murdered by a gang as an initiation ritual. This movie is far from a masterpiece, but still very enjoyable for those who love a good action movie. Sometimes completely over the top but that is what John Goodman is good at.

Interview with Leonard Vincent CAPE TOWN(IPS, April 10) - Journalism in Ethiopia has become an increasingly hazardous trade over recent years. Finally! All those desperate Atlanta Falcons fans know Michael Vick's fate: He was sentenced to  23 months (almost 2 years) in prison for the dogfighting charges. It was probably going to be less, but the fact that Vick lied about killing the pit bulls that didn't test well for fighting, added some weight to the final sentence. He admited it in the end, but it was a little too late.Â
The former Falcons star pleaded guilty last August, but he stated he had nothing to do with the dog killing. After spending a while with an FBI agent, he ended up admitting he had hung one dog. The lying was a very bad move for his sentence.
This is definitely a lesson for all those NFL players that are usually "trouble". Wasn't it stupid to risk everything like that? Michael Vick was a very successful quarterback. Why start with the dogfighting thing? Come on, it's not like the needed the money or anything. It's just beyond our reach to understand how such a successful, well-paid, fam
Michael Vick knows where he'll be spending most of the next two years, locked away in a federal prison, doing his time for dogfighting.Once he's a free man - probably in the summer of 2009, assuming he gets time off for good behavior - what comes next? Will NFL commissioner Roger Goodell lift Vick's indefinite suspension? How many seasons will the quarterback miss beyond this year and next, which are a given? Will another team be willing to take a chance on Vick? If he does get back on the field, will he still be the same electrifying player? Will he even be a quarterback?"No one knows," said Dan Reeves, who was Vick's first pro coach with the Atlanta Falcons. "A lot depends on him and what he does with these next two years. I don't know if anybody knows what's going to happen. Either he comes out a better person or he comes out a bitter person."Reeves is right. It's impossible to predict what might happen two years from now, after Vick has served the 23-month sentence imposed Mo

Today I heard another one to add to the list: "Close the baby giggle completely
Keifer Sutherland turned himself into the Glendale, California jail yesterday to start his 48-day sentence.
The actor had been sentenced earlier in the day for DUI and violating probation. The L.A. county Sheriff’s Department said,
“Mr. Sutherland is very polite and humble. He was very cooperative during the booking process,” said jail spokesman Officer John Balian. “He will be issued an orange jumpsuit, and will be housed alone in a cell, since he’ll be a long-term inmate.”
He will be assigned laundry and kitchen duties, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to other inmates. He will be able to roam around the jail 75% of the time. He is expected to serve the full-term without early release.
He was also sentenced to five-years probation and must take an 18-month alcohol education program.

I read an interesting article a while back by Wendy Keller called The desire not to write, a part of which goes:The reason writers don't write is because we simply know that language cannot begin to convey accurately the words in our hearts, minds and spirits. She has a point. As I may have mentioned I have a fondness for the work of the Irish writer Samuel Beckett. Well, not all of it. I own all of it and I've read all of it but some of his early prose goes right over my head. As a young man, a young intellectual, his work was deliberately esoteric and referenced now quite obscure classical literature, heroes of his like Dante and Racine, but over the years he moved farther and farther from his origins towards, to use his expression, "a literature of the unword". In fact he waged a lifelong battle with words and suffered frequently from bouts of crippling writer's block. He was rarely satisfied with his efforts and always self-deprecatory when presenting new works. His final text, a
Lindsay Lohan served just 84 minutes of her 24-hour jail sentence yesterday (15.11.07). The 'Mean Girls' star handed herself in to Los Angeles County's Lynwood Jail at 10.30am to serve the remainder of her DUI (driving under the influence) sentence and was released at 11.54am. Nicole Richie served 82 minutes in the same prison for a DUI conviction in August, while earlier this year, Paris Hilton served 23 days at Lynwood for driving with a suspended licence. Lindsay was sentenced to the mandatory minimum of four days in jail after pleading no contest to two DUI charges. Prosecutors agreed to reduce this to just two days if she served 10 days of community service. The 21-year-old actress had already served one day after the authorities gave her credit for the time she spent in custody following her July arrest. Lindsay - who checked out of Utah's Cirque Lodge rehab centre on October 5 after a stay of over two months - was also placed on three years probation and must complete an
One of the classic arguments against the reliability of scripture is that there are tens of thousands of errors in the texts. You see, there are many ancient copies of the books of the New Testament. However, there are several errors among them, and many copies don't completely match any of the other copies. Some are spelling errors, others are syntax errors. Some are paraphrases rather than direct copies. And so, the argument goes, there is no way to know what the original scripture is supposed to be. Such an overwhelming number of errors, as some assert, casts suspicion over what exactly constitutes the true teaching of the religion -- or indeed the very legitimacy of such a religion.Sounds convincing, doesn't it?Well, don't throw your Bible away just yet. Here we have a situation where the facts as they are presented are technically accurate -- there are indeed many discrepancies among the thousands of New Testament texts that exist. However, the conclusion presented (that there

The chessboard killer got life in jail, for 48 killings, meaning he didn't achieve his goal of becoming Russia's most prolific serial killer of all time. So what's his next step? He filed an appeal with Russia's Supreme Court, because he feels his punishment is "too harsh":
"At Pichushkin's request I filed an appeal expressing disagreement with the punishment, which he finds too harsh," lawyer Alexander Karyagin told Interfax.
What, I only killed 48 people, and you're going to send me to jail for life? That's not fair! He picked the wrong country to be a serial killer in, though. In some western countries, he'd probably have been released by now. He's just a misunderstood victim of society, after all. Or he should have hired some of O.J.'s lawyers.

Here's a great space for all you closet minimalists looking for an easy way out:
Each story submission must be just one sentence long, a la Hemingway's famous "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." It's a fantastic exercise in precision, and a good one-line story can truly speak a thousand pictures.

By: 0 Writing is rarely easy. This is probably because writing developed over countless centuries. During this time writing was evolved to meet the need for increasingly more accurate communication both in writing between peoples. Writing became necessary to convey accurately what was impractical to say by word of mouth over distance and to record what was said in reply and finally agreed.Writing is needed by people simply survive. The motive for the development of language and writing was not the desire to establish a literary tradition but to enable the transfer of views information and knowledge with reliability simplicity accuracy and precision between leaders who rule trade and wage war. From this need to survive the technique also extended to accommodate natural teachers of ideas in knowledge politics religion social arts and commerce to pass on the culture from the older generation to its young. To become a good writer it is not too far fetched to expect good writing basics now
A petition bearing 3,600 signatures asking a judge to sentence Prison Break actor Lane Garrison to prison for nearly seven years for killing a teenager in a drunken driving crash was refused by a Superior Court bailiff Wednesday in Beverly Hills.Friends and classmates of the dead teen gathered signatures after school, at football games, in front of stores and by going door to door, Lee said.A bailiff explained the petition could not be accepted in court, but it would be accepted at the hearing if it was submitted through the district attorney's office, said James Lee, a spokesman for the teen's family. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office had not received the petition Tuesday but spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said it was not unusual for prosecutors to submit such private communications."Generally, if people have letters for the judge, they many, many times submit it to the prosecutor and the prosecutor presents it to the court," she said."Obviously, there's a sense that peo
