      Joke - Redneck Sensitivity

As the ambulance takes the body away, Bubba says, "Well, damn, someone should go and tell his wife." Donnie says, "OK, I'm pretty good at that sensitive stuff, I'll do it." Two hours later, he comes back carrying a case of Beer. Bubba says, "Where did you get that beer, Donnie?" "Cooter's wife gave it to me," Bubba replies. "That's unbelievable, you told the lady her husband was dead and she gave you beer?" "Well, not exactly", Donnie says. "When she answered the door, I said to her, you must be Cooter's widow'." She said, "You must be mistaken, I'm not a widow." Then I said "I'll bet you a case of beer you are."  Read more

MRT food sensitivity and food intolerance testing helpful
Certain foods, additives and chemicals are capable of triggering immune reactions that are not due to allergies. Chemicals mediators released by the immune system are capable of producing a variety body reactions resulting in symptoms. Avoiding foods that produce such reactions significantly improve symptoms resulting from eating those foods. Mediator release (MRT) testing measures the release of chemical mediators from white blood cells and platelets in response to specific foods, additives or chemicals. Such chemical reactions presumably indicate sensitivity to these foods or additives. Principles of mediator release testing (MRT):Mediator release testing (MRT, Signet Diagnostic Corporation, www.nowleap.com) is based on measuring the reaction in the blood resulting from a food or chemical to which you have become sensitive or intolerant. When exposed to a foods or chemical that you are sensitive to your cells release various chemical mediators. These mediators cause an alteration of

The Chinese Monkey Incident: When Should Personal Morality Overshadow Cultural Sensitivity?
A word of warning: some of the events described in this post are quite graphic. My more sensitive readers may wish to stop reading here and click over to The Daily Puppy. If you’re still here out of morbid curiousity, I’ll continue. I don’t write this to be gratuitous in any way. The event I outline below is only to lay foundation for a broader, more important moral and cultural question. The Chinese Monkey Incident My step-father was telling us the story of how his boss, Dan, flew to China to drum up new clientèle for their wholesale seafood business. His prospective clients treated him to a local restaurant that specializes in very traditional Chinese fare - a variety of animal delicacies. At the conclusion of a dozen or so courses including all manner of mammal, fish, reptile and insect bits, the coup de gras was delivered to the table: a live monkey. The monkey was walked to the dining table, into the center of which a whole had been cut, then strapped to t

How Insulin Secreting Cells Maintain Their Glucose Sensitivity
Scientists at the leading Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet have resolved the mystery of how insulin-secreting cells maintain an appropriate number of ATP sensing ion channel proteins on their surface. This mechanism, which is described in the latest issue of Cell Metabolism, explains how the human body can keep the blood glucose concentration within the normal range and thereby avoid the development of diabetes.Blood sugar absorbed from food is timed to enter muscles as energy supply as well as the liver and fat tissue for energy storage. Otherwise, diabetes occurs. Such glucose transport is precisely controlled by insulin, the body's only hormone capable of lowering blood sugar. This hormone is released from insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas.Click here to see the rest of this article in Medical News Todaypermalink TechnoratiPhilippine Nursing http://Philippinenursing.blogspot.com

The marriage eventually soured and she left husband Lketinga for good, returning to Switzerland with their daughter. Later, she wrote a book about her experience as a “White Masai” that became a huge bestseller in Germany and beyond. Is this: a) European colonialism meets Jerry Springer? b) A cross-cultural romance ripe for commercial exploitation? c) International child abduction? The answer, from the evidence of The White Masai, is d) all of the above. In the movie adaptation, Carola (Nina Hoss) is entranced by a man in traditional dress while in Mombasa with her boyfriend. Gluten sensitivity confirmed by genetics and blood tests in irritable bowel syndrome
Gluten sensitivity is very common, much more common than celiac disease. However, both celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are often missed, ignored or misdiagnosed. It is widely accepted celiac disease affects approximately 1% of people worldwide. It is commonly accepted that between 3-4% of people previously diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have undiagnosed celiac disease. Dr’s. Rodney Ford, Ken Fine and I believe that many more than this are gluten sensitive. We believe that the presence of an elevated serum gliadin antibody is indicative of gluten sensitivity in most people. We concede that such individuals often do not have “true celiac disease” as it is now strictly defined by presence of HLA DQ2 or DQ8, a positive IgA endomysial antibody test or tissue transglutaminase IgA antibody with characteristic small bowel biopsy. However, our experience is that such individuals commonly present with symptoms identical to those with celiac disease and these sympto

Genetics of Food Allergy and Food Sensitivity
Can genetics explain if you are allergic to some pollens or foods? White blood cell patterns determined genetically and designated as HLA DQ and DR genes have been identified with an increased risk of pollen, dust, latex, and food allergies. The intriguing part of this story is that there is an advantage to knowing your HLA DR and DQ type when evaluating your risk for pollen allergies and their associated food allergies or cross reactions. We all have proteins on the surface of our cells that are genetically determined. These patterns are easily detectable by testing cells from blood or from the mouth. Specific patterns have been associated with increased risk for autoimmune conditions, gluten sensitivity and celiac disease. Now it appears certain DQ or DR patterns are associated with food and pollen allergies as well.Boehncke, et al. from the University of Frankfurt reported in 1998 that certain white blood cell types known HLA class II genotypes or HLA DQ and DR genetic patterns were

      SENSITIVITY TO HOT N COLD
Sensitivity Sensitivity may be loosely defined as the short sharp pain felt when something touches the affected tooth. It usually occurs in response to cold, hot, sweet, sour or touch. It is usually the response of the exposed dentin to some irritant. Dentin is the underlying part of the tooth that is exposed when the overlying enamel is lost. This may occur either due to tooth-decay or to wrong brushing habits - leading to enamel getting lost from that area and exposing the underlying dentin. Another important cause of sensitivity is trauma to the tooth - if any tooth is constantly being traumatized due to bite problems or improper occlusion then that tooth is likely to become sensitive. People who tend to consume a lot of aerated drinks (sodas) may also have sensitive teeth. The acid in the drink tends to wear off the enamel and then the underlying dentin gets exposed to the environment, causing sensitivity. Bad oral hygiene that can cause severe gum infections can also p

Food sensitivity and intolerance testing options include new mediator release testing (MRT)
As a gastroenterologist, I diagnose and treat many people with food allergies and intolerance, colitis, Crohn’s disease, reflux and irritable bowel syndrome or IBS. As a food allergy and food intolerance specialist – the Food Doc, I find food allergies are relatively easy to diagnose, as is Celiac disease, the worst form of a spectrum of gluten sensitivity. Crohn’s and colitis are also usually easily diagnosed though this requires an endoscopic examination of the colon, colonoscopy, with biopsies of abnormal appearing intestinal lining. Sometimes specific blood tests for colitis and Crohn's disease may screen for or help confirm ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. More recently, biopsies of normal appearing intestine lining, has been found to reveal previously unsuspected microscopic forms of inflammation that may be due to food allergies or intolerance. These various forms of microscopic colitis, often misdiagnosed as IBS include lymphocytic, collagenous and mastocytic

      Post-Modern Sensitivity
Josh mentioned some writing in the Times on Barak Obama in his recent post here. There were a couple paragraphs from his book that I loved. I pasted them below. [And yet for all her professed secularism, my mother was in many ways the most spiritually awakened person that I’ve ever known. She had an unswerving instinct for kindness, charity, and love, and spent much of her life acting on that instinct, sometimes to her detriment. Without the help of religious texts or outside authorities, she worked mightily to instill in me the values that many Americans learn in Sunday school: honesty, empathy, discipline, delayed gratification, and hard work. She raged at poverty and injustice. Most of all, she possessed an abiding sense of wonder, a reverence for life and its precious, transitory nature that could properly be described as devotional. Sometimes, as I was growing up, she would wake me up in the middle of the night to have me gaze at a particularly spectacular moon, or she would

      The Importance of Sensitivity
By Jacint BarbaThe ability to respond immediately and effectively to an attack is key to defending one's self in a combative situation. In any moment of time during a fight, the opponent will have some sort of action whether it is a slight movement, a pronounced movement, or no movement at all. This action may serve as a stimulus for a response and can be monitored by the sense of touch. In the martial art of Wing Chun, sensitivity is the term that describes the ability to be aware of what is happening through the sense of touch. The goal of developing sensitivity is to get an instant and accurate assessment of what is happening in a fight so that an immediate and proper response can be performed. There are many things during a fight that a combatant needs to be aware of that can be recognized through sensitivity. Sensitivity gives awareness of the ever-changing positions between a fighter and his or her opponent. A fighter needs to know when the opponent is in a strong dominating pos

Probiotic VSL#3 breaks down toxic protein gliadin that causes celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity
The probiotic VSL#3 breaks down gliadin, the toxic protein produced from gluten. VSL#3 hydrolyzes gliadin peptides according to De Angelis et al. ("VSL#3 probiotic preparation has the capacity to hydrolyze gliadin polypeptides responsible for Celiac Sprue" in Biochim Biophys Acta. 2006; 1762(1): 80-93). They observed almost complete breakdown of gliadin during prolonged fermentation in bread dough. The ability to decrease the toxicity of wheat flour is a giant step forward. VSL#3 (www.vsl3.com), a commercially available probiotic, has previously been shown effective in digestive conditions such as Crohn's disease, IBS, antibiotic associated diarrhea. Probiotics are known to decrease gut permeability. This study confirmed proteins extracted from dough pre-treated with VSL#3 released less zonulin, the protein that controls tight junctions between intestinal lining cells. Zonulin is believed to be important in the development of celiac disease. It increases permeability of leaky gut t
