Which 3 Common Drugs Trigger Most ER Visits by Seniors?
In 2004 and 2005, three drugs -- the blood thinner warfarin, the diabetes drug insulin and the heart drug digoxin -- caused about 58,000 emergency room visits a year in those 65 and older, which amounts to a full third of all U.S. emergency room visits by senior citizens. All three are drugs for which it is difficult to determine the correct dose. Researchers were attempting to determine the danger posed to senor citizens by a long list of drugs that have been deemed "potentially inappropriate" for use in the elderly. But the 41 drugs accounted for just 3.6 percent of emergency room visits. Instead, three well-known, commonly used drugs caused the most problems. Warfarin can cause excessive bleeding, insulin sometimes causes blood sugar levels to drop to dangerous levels, and digoxin can cause problems ranging from nausea to erratic heartbeats.

      Should Seniors Consider Online Dating?
Online dating isn't just for young people. Today there are many, many places online for vibrant, enthusiastic seniors to meet people. They all offer different services and provide features that you may or may not like. But in general, online dating can be a very positive experience for the single senior. With an online dating service, there are lots of choices and dating opportunities. Not since high school or college will you find such a large number of potential dates and mates in one place. It can be heartening just to know that there are many single seniors out there who would love to find a loving partner. Since there are so many people on the Internet dating scene, it should be enough proof that it does work, right? Some people are a little iffy about putting themselves out to strangers, but with the advancing technology making the world smaller and smaller everyday, the word "stranger" sometimes means nothing anymore. Online dating sites give you a wide list of people to choose

News : 11 ways for seniors to mop up credit card debt
11 ways for seniors to get out of credit card debt By John Egan Before she sought help from the nonprofit Consolidated Credit Counseling Services Inc. about three years ago, Joyce Roberts' credit card debt had swelled to between $10,000 and $15,000. This Massachusetts baby boomer had essentially gone bust. Now Roberts, 51, pays $270 a month through Consolidated Credit Counseling in hopes of erasing her credit card debt within the next year. She no longer has any credit cards -- just an ATM card. Roberts says the debt mounted because she'd been making only the minimum monthly payments on her credit card bills -- something she advises others not to do."I was always a day late and a dollar short," Roberts says. "I've never gotten really close to being financially secure."Once the debt is eliminated, Roberts plans to quit her part-time weekend gig at McDonald's but maintain her full-time job as a customer service representative at an optical supply company. Why weight loss requires strength training, even for women and seniors, Part 2
In the first part of this article we highlighted the importance of strength training while dieting to lose weight. I introduced the idea that underneath your body fat you have a strong musculoskeletal system. There’s a lot of muscle mass and good, strong bones underneath all of that body fat. If you find a strategy to conserve that muscle, even while you’re losing body fat, then you can have a much more successful weight loss experience and can end up with a strong skeleton and strong muscles at the end of your regimen. The way to do that is to engage in basic weight-bearing strength training while you are pursuing a diet. You don’t have to go crazy on this. I am not suggesting that you go to the gym and start pumping iron on the bench press, 50 reps a day, or that you exhaust your body with crazy workouts. It turns out that you don’t even need to stress your body very much to maintain the current muscle mass that you have. Just 15 seconds of stress creates new

Why weight loss requires strength training, even for women and seniors, Part 1
Did you know that strength training is crucial for successfully losing weight and keeping it off? I’m talking about weight-bearing exercise. It doesn’t have to be a huge, hulking workout where you’re trying to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime, it just has to be some basic strength training. Why is strength training important for losing weight? Strength training is important because many people try to starve themselves into weight loss. They think it’s all about controlling calories. Unfortunately, a lot of dieticians and nutritionists don’t really understand strength training, and they also think that it’s just about calories: Calories in, and calories out. You consume extra calories, you’ll gain body fat. If you have a calorie deficit, you’re going to lose weight. While this may be true, this approach is only part of the picture. Sure, you need a calorie deficit to lose weight, but how does your body actually use calories? It

      Don't Be Bored, Seniors!
I think most of our seniors at home don't have many activities to do. Moreover, we sometimes don't make time for them. If this is the case, why not make them gather online and they might use their time efficiently. This will also keep the boredom off when they chat on "their" topic. People talk with people in the same group better and the same goes to senior personals as well. They find it interesting when they gather with each other with the same age group and talk about happenings during their times.Senior dating is becoming a trend now and even a site is made for this purpose. They chat online and if they find each other is interested in each other, a time can be set for a day out or for a gathering. Nice, isn't it?

We had lunch at Ruby's Inn a delightful destination resort. They've been open since before Bryce Canyon was declared a National Park. All told, there were seven of us including Bev (my roommmate) and myself. She drove us to all the major "points" so we could get out and explore the sites. I'll get pictures posted within the week.Having left the house shortly after sunrise (before 8AM) we didn't arrive home again until shortly before sunset (7:30 PM).Click here! Senior Center Bans Free Doughnuts, Seniors Protest
This is what senior citizens at the William Koehler Memorial Senior Center in New York resorted to when they were basically told that they didn’t know what was good for them.   The protest started when the center decided not to accept free doughnuts for the seniors because they are bad for you. I love the sign on the left of the picture, we are old enough to chose. While he may believe that he is old enough to choose, the truth is that the liberals in government never believe you are old enough to take care of yourself. Now this way of thinking is creeping into other organizations. It is becoming a mindset, and people don’t even realize it. The government decides that it is their duty to regulate trans-fats and the next thing you know our senior citizens are being denied doughnuts.   Here are a couple of examples of some of the other signs the protesters wore: “Give Us Our Just Desserts” and “They’re Carbs, Not Contraband.” The average a

      Seniors protest free donut ban
Like any morning at the elderly were playing games, creating crafts and demonstrating out front. Their protest? Could it be lack of affordable health care? Perhaps mishandling of their retirement funds? No, the quagmire of the day is the lack of free donuts. The center receives on average around 16 cases of donated baked goods, however as of late they have been discarding these sweet treats as they are not healthy for the seniors. Putnam County decided that they were setting a bad example by providing these unhealthy treats. The seniors, in turn, decided to protest with sandwich board signs stating Give Us Our Just Desserts and They're Carbs, Not Contraband . The center does provide lunch everyday for a suggested donation of $1.50, and there's nothing stopping the seniors from going to the doughnut shop or anywhere else they desire. Free is free, but the seniors don't like the idea that the center implied that they were gorging themselves on jelly donuts and were too senile to

      Physical Fitness for Seniors
Keeping physically fit and active on a daily basis is beneficial for everyone. Physical fitness for seniors is a must if they are to enjoy their lives to the full.Older adults that lose the ability to do normal, every day activities on their own, doesn't have to mean that it's due to their age. Seniors, Sex, And Studies
Well, yet another study. At least those in the studious professions have job security. There’s a study for everything, but sex seems to be quite a prominent subject. Most of the “research studies” are so totally irrelevant, I can’t even get my head around how much money is spent on these studies that mean absolutely nothing. Where does the money come from? Then again, I probably wouldn’t want to know. Anyway. Here is breaking news, though, from one of our most recent studies! We now know that old people, according to CNN: “routinely engage in vaginal intercourse, oral sex and masturbation.” Holy cow! No way! I can certainly see why this would be CNN newsworthy. Good to know, though. And research funding well-spent, no doubt. By the way, thanks for putting the disturbing images of bonking seniors in my head. I may never be able to masturbate again with such things invading my thoughts, while apparently the old guys, according to the study, are

Safety Precautions for Seniors Dating Online
Older Americans can find themselves alone after many years of marriage because of death or divorce. It certainly isn't an uncommon occurrence today. These people find themselves alone and lonely and more and more often, they are turning on their computers in order to look for the companionship that they so desperately want and need. These older Americans didn't grow up in a computerized world. Many of them are very computer savvy, but there are many who are not. They may have used a computer for shopping or banking or emailing family and friends, but the world of online dating is something that is truly out of their realm of expertise. Back in their dating years, the young man always made the first move. HE called her. HE asked for a date and when she agreed, he showed up with flowers in one hand and a box of chocolates in the other. Dating was courting in their experience, but somewhere along the way the rules got changed...a LOT. Now don't misunderstand. Older people are well a
