      Selfishness is Evil
The Schalit, Regev, and Goldwasser families are displaying their emotions publicly. There doesn't seem to be a media outlet not willing to display the results of their anguish. Unfortunately their grief has turned into selfishness. It would appear that their child is more imprant than their neighbors child. The life of their offspring is more vital to Israel than the lives and future lives of

      Just What is Selfishness?
Photo: Thomas HawkOn Tuesday evening I went to my friend Christopher’s house. I originally met him through a writers’ group that we were members of and have since become very good friends – he’s a man who never fails to interest and inspire me. Last night he held a meeting entitled “Finding Your Highest Self” where one of the subjects explored was the concept of ‘selfishness’ and

The Kibbutz in the Age of Selfishness
For much of Israel’s existence, the kibbutz embodied its highest ideals: collective labor, love of the land and a no-frills egalitarianism. But starting in the 1980s, when socialism was on a global downward spiral and the country was mired in hyperinflation, Israel’s 250 or so kibbutzim seemed doomed. Their debt mounted and their group dining halls grew empty as the young moved away. Now, in a surprising third act, the kibbutzim are again thriving. Only in 2007 they are less about pure socialism than a kind of suburbanized version of it. On most kibbutzim, food and laundry services are now privatized; on many, houses may be transferred to individual members, and newcomers can buy in. While the major assets of the kibbutzim are still collectively owned, the communities are now largely run by professional managers rather than by popular vote. And, most important, not everyone is paid the same. Once again, people are lining up to get in. An interesting New York Times article: The K

      Bok B-team selfishness a disgrace
David Moffett, former boss of the New Zealand Rugby Union, writing in The Press on 30 June 2007 labelled the South African Rugby Union an absolute disgrace. I think most of us would agree with him on that one – but he’s talking about the latest Springbok B-team fiasco, and not the usual goings on at SA Rugby HQ that regularly keep us amused. (more…)

      Selfishness Destroys Relationships
Selfishness Destroys RelationshipsSelfishness is a destructive force in any relationship, but more so in marriage because of the increased amount of time spent together. Things that you may be understanding or tolerant about with a friend or acquaintance may be unbearable when you have to live with them day after day. We all need to stop and consider in what ways we may be acting selfishly in our relationship. It is often easier to see how our partner is being selfish and can be tempting to point out to them their follies. But since it is so true that the only person we can change is our self, we need to begin and end with striving to improve our self. We can make conscious choices to be kind, considerate, and thoughtful—rregardless of the behavior of our partner. We can look for ways to be loving in our relationship. As we focus on being more loving and selfless; giving gifts of love unconditionally to our partner, we will soon find these gifts returning to us.This does not mean tha

      Selfishness won't do you good
Selfishness is not a positive term. It goes to the blogger community and the blogosphere as well. When I started Simple Life of YP, I ignored visiting blogs which have high traffic or newbie blogs. Maybe it's because I'm jealous of those Big Boys and have looked down at those new bloggers as well. I realised about my wrong just in time and quickly started responding to emails from my readers and blog pals.Bloggers can't keep all to him/herself. Sharing is caring. Also, in this boom of technology, what secrets or techniques can be kept? Internet users are smart and whatever secret can be exposed at the time it set its foot on the internet. if you help others this time, maybe at the time when you came to a dead end, some people out there might be in the right place and right time to help you out.Maybe you might be jealous of those Big Boys like John Chow, Techcrunch or Engadget because they are superior with their amount of readers and you don't want to give a linkback to them even y

On Andrew Speaker, antiquated laws and selfishness.
“The man infected with a dangerous and hard-to-treat form of tuberculosis, who potentially exposed several hundred airline passengers to the disease, is the son-in-law of a microbiologist who studies tuberculosis at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.” Anahad O’Connor and John Holusha of the New York Times website, write, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement this afternoon that Mr. Speaker’s father-in-law, Dr. Bob Cooksey, works for the C.D.C. in its division of tuberculosis elimination, where he studies the spread of tuberculosis and other bacteria. But Dr. Cooksey insisted that neither he nor his laboratory was the source of Mr. Speaker’s tuberculosis infection.“I’m a research microbiologist in C.D.C.’s Division of Tuberculosis Elimination, and my work does involve working with a wide range of organisms, including TB,” he said in the statement. “As part of my job, I am regularly tested for TB.

      The dehumanizing effect of selfishness
The brazen egoism rampant in society never fails to amaze me. I cannot understand how people unhesitatingly indulge their self-absorption and walk around with such unmerited auras of entitlement. It is a common and pervasive practice to disregard those encountered in the course of one’s day, treating others as mere occupiers of social roles, such as receptionists, employees, customers, salesmen, waiters, etc. We all have been guilty of this objectification, though in varying degrees of intensity and frequency. Some, however, habitually relegate the other solely to the capacity or function he or she occupies in their lives, never considering the other’s distinct personhood. This narcissistic attitude is conveyed in the way these sorts engage with other people, their behavior and interac

      Drunk Drivers: Pure Selfishness
Even though I serve alcohol for a living, I have a zero tolerance for drinking and driving. Getting drunk and then operating a vehicle is selfish, stupid, and inexcusable. Last May I was hit by a drunk driver - my car was totaled, my daughter, sister, friend and I all went to the hospital with injuries, my teenage daughter hurt the worst. I can proudly say I have never driven drunk in my life. There should always be a designated driver. If not, then don't drink. It is not a necessity, it is a choice and a privilege. Next time you are debating if it is a good idea to chance it, (obviously you have no regards for yourself), at least try to think of the innocent- imagine that 5 year old child that is helpless in the backseat of a car, that you may take the life of, all because of a bad decision. Plan and Think ahead. Stay alive, and keep others safe as well. Below is the total Alcohol Related Traffic Fatalities in 2005 for all 50 states. 2005 Alcohol-Related Traffic Fatalities (ARTF) S

      Selfishness, Sin, and Who Cares?
The basis of everything evil and un-Christ like is selfishness - all else is but a symptom.  All of our worldly problems, all of our fallen nature goes back to a single point of origin - selfishness.  Selfishness removes us from God by putting our own desires, individually and collectively, ahead of God.  Christians accept Scripture as the literal Word of God, the Truth.  Unpack what Scripture has to say about our sinful nature and you'll find a single essence - selfishness.  I challenge any reader or listener to identify one negative element about human nature that is not, at its core, a symptom of selfishness.  To be fair, I am strictly talking about those areas of our nature driven by free will.  Everything sinful about us is grounded in selfishness.  Our depravity is manifested through our selfishness - we are absolutely depraved.  Removed from God, we cannot be anything else.    Going back to my challenge, I'll list a few of our depravities to make my point:   Anger is

The Price Of Money - Selfishness
A series of experiments have shown that merely thinking about or looking at money changes the way people behave, causing them to be more selfish and self-sufficient.Participants first re-arranged several jumbled lists of words to form sentences. Some participants were given word lists that led to neutral sentences (e.g. "it is cold outside'), whereas other participants were given words that led to money-related sentences (e.g. "a high-paying salary'). Next, they all attempted to solve a difficult geometric puzzle. Those participants who had completed the money-related sentences worked significantly longer on the puzzle before asking for help (average of 314 seconds), compared with the participants who'd completed neutral sentences (average of 186 seconds - no different from controls who didn't complete the earlier sentence task). In another experiment, participants were again primed with either the neutral or money-related descrambling task. Afterwards they sat alone in a
