Sunset, Ebb Tide, watercolour, Vivien BlackburnSunset, looking across the beach as the tide ebbs and the pools of water reflect the sky. I haven't used watercolour for a while and fancied playing with the way that the colours merge and flow and glazes of transparent colour create colours it's impossible to name - just like the sky in real life. There's a lot of aureolin yellow in there - a lovely transparent yellow when used thinly. There is also a very little watercolour pencil and a little pencil added at the end.I do like watercolours - I should remember to use them more often and get a bit more practice in!you can see some other work on Cornwall here

‘We started when we were about 13 playing Christmas songs at school, and then we decided to write our own songs. The first ones were about hobos, boxes, and foxes.’ Ok, let’s draw a collective ahhh. These are the words of a bunch of 17 year olds from Connecticut who call themselves the Seascape. Pretty neat name I think you’ll agree and the good vibes continue to flourish as you listen to the perfect little tunes that they produce. It’s early days but already the potential is there to see. ‘Person Place or Thing’ is one of 2 new tunes that they sent me on and it highlights Seascape's willingness to experiment and change tact at every stage of a songs life cycle. It may sound like it is going to fall apart at any minute but believe me that is a precious art in itself. ‘Perso
I was laying in bed this morning thinking how the beach would be if the water was actually of this fairy floss like texture, weird.
As the title states, this was taken at Clifton Beach, Tasmania on sunset just before the weather caved in.
beach, charcoal and coloured pencil, 7 x 7.5 inches Vivien Blackburn Experiments. The scan isn't level - the horizon is :>) - a small version of the charcoal/cp beach trying out a cream cartridge paper as the background. The toothier paper worked much better, this is a little too smooth. I also like working larger better. And the landscape below was a mixed media demo of acrylics loosely applied to grey card (which shows through in places) with a palette knife and then worked on with pastels and a little coloured pencil. Winter Fields. mixed media. Vivien Blackburn 8.5 x 5.5 inchesI'm hoping to push on with the canvasses tomorrow..

Viewers knew from the moment they met Irene and her son Peter that their restaurant The Seascape was in incapable hands. From poor management, to an old-fashioned chef who was unwilling to listen to Gordo or even taste his dishes, to a nagging mama who made terrible Greek cookies, to a crumbling restaurant interior that had remained unchanged since its heyday in the 70's, one got the sense that there was NO HOPE for this group. Oh, our intrepid Gordo whipped the staff into some sort of shape, fired the chef and sous chef, both of whom kept a filthy kitchen and didn't have a clue of how to cook fresh food, and upgraded the decor to resemble a 21st century version of a red bordello. But one could sense quite early on that Peter would never fill his dead father's capable shoes, not as long as his mama was around to pistol-whip him with her tongue at every opportunity. And so on the last day of his week with this motley crew, Gordo kinda sorta showed the group how to turn the restaurant
Stormy Evening copyright Vivien BlackburnLooking through a sketch book I found these 2 unfinished works and finished them off - they are both mixed media (containing everything but the kitchen sink!).This one is earlier in the day, the clouds starting to build up.Those unfinished long seascapes on canvas are still sitting waiting to be finished off but I've been busy with other non-painting stuff :( .
Wild Day copyright Vivien Blackburn mixed media on paperAn unfinished painting I came across and finished off today, after painting the sides of some of those @&2+**@ canvasses - I HATE that job with a passion and usually keep up to date with them - but this time they were all 'in progress' and so all need doing :(This was watercolour, oil pastel and coloured pencil, I added a touch of acrylic and it was finished.Following on the last post I thought I'd look at contemporary still life that I find interesting and see what sort of objects they are using, what media and how they treat the subject.First of all is Shirley Trevena - exciting, dynamic and vibrant watercolours with touches of mixed media. I love the excitement and buzz of her work, her glorious colours, her distortion of perspective, overlapping elements, tipping up tables or plates if it works to make a better painting - a delicious explosion of colour. You can see her work on http://www.shirleytrevena.com/ - I can highly

If the dominant colors in your painting are light, it is considered high key. The dominant color should differ in value from the other colors for good effect. Using high contrast at the focal area will lead the eye to that area of the painting. Remember that the focal point is the star of your production. Other areas of the painting are supporting characters.
Click for 318 image of a SeagullWell I didn't see Easter Bunny but this bird tended to make a nuisance of itself when I was trying to take a seascape photo. I walked to the left and it did the same as well as moving to the right, the gull followed, but of cause it had to stand between me and the photo I wanted to take.Click for 281kb image of Sunset at Port BroughtonThere is usually a good sunset at Easter time at Port Broughton and this year was no exception.Click for 497kb image of Port Broughton SeascapeI wouldn't say Port Broughton has a beautiful beach but at the same time it is an interesting one. I stitched three photos together in an attempt to give you a general idea of what the coastline looks like that is neighbouring the edge of the caravan park that my husband and I were staying at.Quick links:Free Subscription to SnapShots by Email technorati tags: images, Port Broughton, snapshots, photo, seagull, beach, sunset
I knew that people had said that moleskines didn't take watercolour - but I had to find out for myself :>)I started off with a rough pencil sketch of a marsh harbour at Brancaster Staithe from the small moor on the hill above. It's a tiny area but real moorland with gorse and bracken and rocks. The watercolour just rolled off its waxy surface and had to be scrubbed in quite drily to get it to stay on the paper at all! Definitely not one to try again - maybe gouache? or acrylic? Then I used coloured pencils to reinforce colours, letting some of the watercolour that 'stuck' show through.A mix of Polychromos, Lyra, Derwent and some cheap unnamed supermarket coloured pencils were used, reinforced with graphite pencil. This is a view I'd like to do in oils some time, working plein air. It was done from a photograph taken when I sketched there last year. There's a wonderful view from the moor, known as The Common, of the harbour with its islands and twisting creeks, reed beds and salt mar

The thing I like best about teaching workshops, is the study I have to do myself to be prepared. I take teaching very seriously and I do the exact same tasks that I ask my students to do. It forces me to go back to good fundamentals in my work and to do the exercises which make us better painters. I don't believe I would study if I weren't teaching. It is too easy to get into my painting routine, never giving a thought to good study time. Teaching keep me on my toes, and forces me to justify what I do in methods and techniques, not to my students but rather to myself. I've made a start on two of the 40inch square canvasses. One is going to be an evening/nightfall view of the beach with the moon rising and the last light catching the pools left by the ebbing tide. One of a series of works I've done about the beach at this time - just before and just after sunset. There are more subtle colour changes and more shine on the sea than the photo shows. It has a way to go yet - this is the beginning, establishing lights and darks and the form of the pools.I sketched it in roughly in Prussian blue acrylic and then worked on with oils. Some of the acrylic will show in the finished piece.Next I decided to work on another of the 40 inch canvasses, loosely using the sketch I'd done in charcoal. I used the prussian blue again just to establish where things were, the form of the rocks and the lie of the land with the way the tree grew out of it with some of the tones roughly put in. This has a long way to go and a lot of decisions to be made. Part of me likes i
Looking at some snowy photos a friend showed from a 'little walk' I wondered where our ideas of what scenery is beautiful start. Clearly she loves her area very much.Snow is not my idea of fun! I like to see it - but from somewhere safe and warm and no 'little walks' in it at all for me thanks! The scenery that I love best is the coast. Particularly the wild Atlantic coast of Cornwall, with small coves, wild seas, clean washed sand, rocks, rock pools, beautifully every changing colours of water and flower studded turf coming down to the cliffs. The lanes are very very narrow, one car width often, with high banks just packed with wild flowers. The small ancient stone harbours with old houses clustered round. That was the north coast (it's a peninsula) - the south coast is tidal creeks (drowned valleys) with wooded hillsides and trees overhanging the water, herons, tiny hidden villages and a gentler quality. In spring the woods are totally blue with bluebells.Winter gales are
