“Seagate would be extremely sensitive,” said an industry executive who participates in classified government advisory groups. “I do not think anyone in the U.S. wants the Chinese to have access to the controller chips for a disk drive. One never knows what the Chinese could do to instrument the drive.”
Yep, because the Japanese (Hitachi, Toshiba) and South Koreans (Samsung Group) are that much less of a potential security threat so it’s okay to use their drives.
Not to mention the fact that since 2000 you’ve been using Chinese hard drives manufactured by ExcelStor in your laptops.

The computer industry is odd in many ways. I can buy a Toshiba 160GB laptop hard drive all by itself at Fry's for $149.99 or I can buy the Seagate external FreeAgent Go with a case, USB chord, and some software for 109.99. If you just wanted the drive it would be cheaper to buy the FreeAgent Go and remove the hard drive from the case. And, you'd still have an extra cable for free!

Seagate has announced two hard drives for consumer and enterprise markets, the Barracuda 7200.11 and Barracuda ES.2 hard drives. The new hard drives use Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR), spin at 7,200 RPM, 32 MB of cache, and Seagate’s renowned five-year limited warranty. The new drives are designed to lower operating temperatures as well as power consumption to increase overall drive longevity and lower decibel ratings from the drives. Along with quite a few newer technologies, Seagate has announced the new drives to have a higher sustained transfer rate of 105MB/s, the highest to date.
Expect to see the new drives in the third quarter at a price of approximately $400.

Seagate Technology on June 25 introduced two 1TB hard drives for consumer and enterprise markets the Barracuda 7200.11 and Barracuda ES.2. Seagate claims to have "the world’s most advanced family of one terabyte drives" with the new Barracuda models. The Barracuda 7200.11 for desktops and Barracuda ES.2 enterprise PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) hard drives deliver 1TB of capacity on a four-disk platform, 7,200-rpm spin speeds, and caches up to 32MB.Seagate claims the new Barracuda 7200.11 only draws 8-watts during idle and 11.6- watts during seek. Acoustically, the Barracuda 7200.11 generates around 27-to-29 decibels of noise during idle and seeking tasks. Both drives will begin shipping in volume during the third quarter of this year. Pricing for each is set at $399.99. Seagate becomes the third hard drive manufacturer to reach the 1TB mark after rival Hitachi launched its 7K1000 3.5-inch drives in January this year.Hitachi’s 7K1000 also sells for around the $US399 price.
