The bay is about 2km wide, very shallow (3-12M), contains two small islands, and has some areas of mangrove. Being the only bay off the narrow Bali Strait, where

The Best But Used Scuba Equipment
The phrase ‘best but used scuba equipment’ might sound like an irony, but believe it or not, such is entirely possible. However hard finding the best but used scuba equipment might be, it is still something that is feasible, given your combined efforts and time. What you need to understand about scuba diving is that it can be so expensive. But why should you curtail your love for the sport just because of lack of money? Fortunately, you can get to experience your favorite sport with, at the same time, the best scuba equipment. The best part with having the best scuba equipment, also, is that it comes for a very cheap price. Indeed, all these you can have – only if you know when, where and how to look. Why should I buy used scuba equipment? The first step in scuba diving is having the

Tipping Etiquette For Your Scuba Crew
Don’t ask. The answer is a resounding "Yes"! You should tip. When you go on a chartered and chaperoned dive through a commercial diving shop, it is customary to tip both the Captain and the DiveMaster. Gratuities are voluntary, incumbent on your generosity. Even so, it is appropriate to offer a tip for your scuba crew. If you are going out for one day, it is important to bring some cash on the boat for tipping. If you are diving with the same DiveMaster and Captain for an entire week, it is acceptable to offer a tip at the end of the week. If you are arranging a variety of dives through a dive shop, you may not have the same Captain or DiveMaster on each dive, so daily tipping is a better idea unless you are certain that your crew will be consistent for the entire duration of your stay.

      Important Facts About Scuba Diving
There are a number of important facts about scuba diving that you need to know. The first one is that you need to have a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. These high pressure tanks that are strapped to the back of the diver, provide air to the diver that is regulated through a breathing device. This lets the diver go very deep in the water without worrying about coming up for oxygen. Next of the facts about scuba diving is that you need specific diving apparel to protect your body and allow you to swim easily. Such apparel includes wetsuits, gloves, hoods, computer watch, etc. The next fact about scuba diving is that nearly anyone can be certified for scuba diving. Choosing Your Scuba Diving Gear

Scuba diving is a complicated sport that requires training and endurance. Scuba diving is not for the faint of heart, or for those who would shrink at the though of being submerged in water for a long time. This is not to say that scuba diving chooses its players because almost everyone can be a scuba diver, provided they do not have the age and health limitations. Children as young as fifteen years old and in good health can train on scuba diving to prepare themselves for certification. However, all those interested to undergo training should fill up a health questionnaire and unde

Why Shouldn't Seniors Learn To Scuba Dive?
When I was a child in the early sixties, the age of sixty was old, not because I was six and anyone older than 21 was decrepit, but because seniors in their sixties were seen as waiting by their firesides to die. Five decades later, the conceptual view of seniors is more likely to be them bathing on the beaches of Borneo or other exotic places instead of sitting by their firesides. Scuba Diving – More Accessible Than You Thought!
Since the early 20th century, SCUBA diving has gone from an incredibly risky undertaking well out of reach for all but the fabulously wealthy to a relatively safe sport with a rapidly growing participant community. SCUBA stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, so named for the tanks and other gear which divers carry on their backs allowing them to breathe underwater. Although this gear termed “life-support equipment” and a commitment of real training is necessary in order to become safe and proficient enough with it to dive even in a small lake or quarry, technological advancements and improvements in science and engineering have enabled longer times underwater, deeper dives, and reduced danger in this exhilarating activity enjoyed by athletes and nature lovers. Scuba Diving And The Of Nitrogen Narcosis
Nitrogen narcosis is a dangerous condition that can affect scuba divers, especially when diving deeper than 30 meters. The exact mechanisms behind nitrogen narcosis are still to be explored, but it has to do with nitrogen gas affecting the nerve transmissions in the body during high pressure. Nitrogen is not the only gas capable of affecting the nerve transmissions when the body experience high pressure; the same state of intoxication can for instance be caused by hydrogen and argon. Since the air inhaled by scuba divers contains a large amount of nitrogen (just like the air that we breathe above the surface every day), nitrogen narcosis was the first type of gas narcosis experienced by scuba divers, hence the name. Today, the condition is also referred to as Inert Gas Narcosis. The effect

      Choosing Your Scuba Diving Equipment
Before taking up scuba diving as a recreational sport, it is important that you get yourself the necessary scuba equipment and gear. There are many options available but if you’re a beginner, it’s best to start from the basics such as the mask, fins, snorkel, and weight belt, then move on to advanced sets later. The Basics: The diving mask allows you to see underwater through the glass plate in front. Most diving masks are constructed in such a way that a user can breathe out into the mask. This prevents the “squeeze” during the descent caused by pressure. Choose a mask that properly fits your face and forms a seal. Most scuba diving masks come with a rubber or silicone "skirt" that creates a watertight seal with the diver's face. There are several types of diving masks such as ful

The Science Of Different Scuba Flippers
Scuba flippers are one of the most important things a diver must have. Fins help divers glide through the water. Without the help of scuba flippers, pushing through the water below would be much more difficult. The effort of moving forward would cause the divers to use up a lot of air. This would significantly shorten their stay underwater, making their dive less enjoyable. This is the reason why choosing the right pair of fins is important. Getting a pair of scuba flippers that lessens the effort needed to cover a certain distance will definitely prolong a diver’s stay underwater. Knowing how they work will definitely help a person pick the right pair of fins for a dive. How Paddle Fins Work Paddle fins are the most commonly used scuba flippers. Scuba diving and protogynous hermaphrodites in Kona Hawaii...
Now there's a phrase that's probably not gonna be googled a lot. Something few people know is that several species of fish are actually hermaphroditic. In the case of these fish, Psychedelic Wrasses (Anampses chrysocephalus), they all start as females that form a harem under a dominant male. If the male ever disappears, then the dominant female will change sex and become a male. Protogynous hermaphrodites go from female to male. The reverse is true in protandrous hermaphrodites. I suspect there are some Hawaiian fish that might do that, but you'd have to ask a marine biologist... but there are some recognizeable fish elsewhere that do just that. The most common ones I can think of are several of the clownfish (everyone seems to know them as "Nemo" these days) species. They start as

Scuba Diving Equipment - The Completely Equipped Diver
What constitutes the minimum equipment that recreational divers should have and use on every dive? To some degree, this will be a factor of the environment and the purpose of the dive. Divers in cold water require more thermal protection than divers in warm water. Divers engaged in activities, such as underwater photography or night, deep, wreck, ice or cavern diving, require additional specialized diving equipment that sight-seeing divers in shallow, open water may not need. There is, however, certain equipment items that most experts believe recreational divers should have and use on every dive. The following is a brief overview of each of these items. Mask, Snorkel and Fins These are the most basic of all diving equipment. Masks allow divers to see underwater without distortion. Snork

      The History of Scuba Diving
The history of scuba diving is full of military prowess, inventor ingenuity, drowning, exploration and tourism. This unquenchable fascination with the depths of the ocean has been fueled by novels like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and even Homer's Odyssey. Anyone that has seen a special on the Discovery Channel has probably felt a pull toward taking his or her own dive. Since the YMCA offered the first diving courses in 1959, one needn't be an expert or Navy Seal to take the plunge. The military has long been fascinated with stealth methods of maneuvering around one's enemy, so naturally scuba diving took off. During the Trojan Wars, divers sabotaged enemy vessels by boring holes in the ships' hulls. The Greeks also tried constructing elaborate underwater defensive shields to keep their a

Looking at the variety of different fins can be confusing as they all seem to offer the best performance with no effort - here I will cover split fins, full foot and open heel fins, general sizing and what the blurb the manufacturers and shops give you actually means. Split Fins Probably the biggest choice you have to make is whether to go for a solid fin design such as the Mares Avanti Quattro fins, or a split fin such as the Tusa X-Pert Zoom fins. The idea behind split fins is that they make it easier to fin underwater - they do this by having a less rigid body which obviously offers less resistance to the water. This does usually mean less raw power although the increased efficiency (less effort) can make up for this. Also unless you happen to dive in conditions where you have to fight

Scuba Diving - Decompression Sickness (DCS)
Getting decompression sickness while scuba diving is not an enjoyable experience. Decompression sickness was encountered when Brooklyn Bridge was being built. DCS affected the workers on the Brooklyn Bridge site who had to spend many hours near the bridge supports in compressed-air filled chambers (caissons) underwater. Upon surfacing, they suffered from abdominal cramps, joint pain, and in some cases death. Let's try and understand what causes decompression sickness while scuba diving. As the diver descends, he breathes in the nitrogen in the air through the tank. This nitrogen dissolves in the blood. While the diver is ascending, the lowered pressure causes the nitrogen to come out of the blood, forming small bubbles. To prevent these bubbles from becoming bigger, they need to be either
