Saber Scouting takes a look at Scott Patterson
After breaking down the mechanics of Kei Igawa and Phil Hughes, today Saber Scouting takes a look at minor leaguer Scott Patterson. From Frankie Piliere:Part of baseball’s charm are the oddities of the game. Players often have their own style and flare. Juan Marichal’s delivery was far from ordinary but it is nothing short of a thing of beauty. What’s my point? Baseball is one of the few sports where something other than the standard is not only accepted, but also embraced. What I am also getting is that some players, pitchers in particular, are who they are because of their mechanics. Scott Patterson, Yankees’ Triple-A reliever, is one of those guys. Patterson is a pitcher with underwhelming pure stuff, and while his command is above average, it is not the type of command that coul

      gym scouting
After a break for four years, I feel that it's about time that I start going back to gym. I do have doubts about committing to a fixed workout schedule but I also know that if I don't sign up for a fitness club membership, I probably won't get started.DH is expecting me to be like him - spend half hour on our fitness equipment but somehow, I just don't have that similar motivation. With so many fitness centres springing up, it's also hard to decide which one to sign up for but the practical me says pick the one closest to where I live though it may not be the most popular or the best. Looks like it's time to do some gym scouting once our seminar is over.

Defensive Tackles at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine
Image: DT Dre Moore, MarylandI will be the first to tell you that the 40 time isn’t that important for a 300 pound defensive lineman, how often do they actually run 40 yards? Not often, but they do often run 10 and 20 yards and most of the players that have good 40 times also have very good 10 and 20 yard splits. If you also look at the positional drills, height, weight, vertical jump, long jump and bench press, you can get an idea of how strong and explosive these prospects are.Unfortunately the big dog Glenn Dorsey didn’t work out, still (supposedly) suffering from a hairline fracture of the tibia that he initialy injured in the summer of 2006. Don’t look for this to lower his draft status much; he still played in every game for LSU in 2007. Dorsey weighed in at a smallish 6’ 1

      Scouting and the atheist family

It is so nice to be able to voice my anti-Christian opinions, vent my outrage at their insanity and just rant whenever I am overwhelmed with frustration at having my rights continuously violated in this Bible-Hell called the Midwest, USA!Today is one of those days, so here goes...I have four lovely children. Two are happy non-religious adults who barely tolerate their crazy fundie relatives on their father's side of the family. My other two boys are ages 11 and 14. They are happy, well-adjusted atheists who appreciate the idea of being good, honest people just for the sake of being good. They don't have the pressure of having to please some imagina

Defensive Ends at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine
Pass rushers are always in high demand at the NFL Draft evidenced by the fact that 25 were selected in the 2007 NFL Draft with five being selected in the first round. This year should be no different and the top defensive ends were recently on display at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine. Here are some of my observations.Vernon Gholston from Ohio State was a man among boys. Not only did he look the part weighing in at 6’ 3” 266 pounds, but he was solid muscle. Gholston is as strong as an ox lifting 225 pounds 37 times, which was the best performance at the combine, actually tying 313 pound offensive tackle Jake Long for first place. Gholston also displayed excellent speed, quickness and leaping ability. He ran his forty at 4.67 with a 35.5” vertical jump and a 10.05 broad jump.Chris Lon

Wide Receivers at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine
Image: Andre CaldwellThis is an interesting year for wideouts with no clear cut first round stars. Last year all the buzz was about Calvin Johnson, who tore it up at the combine and was drafted 2nd overall by the Detroit Lions. Some would argue that by the time the Super Bowl rolled around that New York Giant’s Steve Smith was the best rookie receiver, if you evaluated his playoff and Super Bowl performance it would be hard to argue against that opinion. Smith wasn’t drafted until the second round (51st overall). Well there isn’t a Calvin Johnson in this draft, but there might be plenty of Steve Smith’s. What I mean is that the first round talent is not impressive, but the players that get drafted in the 2nd and 3rd round might end up as the best NFL players, and they certainly ho

Running Backs at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine
The 2008 NFL Scouting Combine is in full swing and up until today there weren't a lot of fireworks to report. A little disclaimer here, all 40 times are courtesy of the NFL Network and are unofficial, I counted maybe 15 people down on the field with stopwatches and another 40 or so in the stands, so you will see a lot of different quoted times come out. The official electronic times will be released next week. The receivers ran this morning and California WR DeSean Jackson measured in at only 5' 9" 167 pounds, but he ran a 4.31 forty yard dash. One of my sleepers prospects from Appalachian State, WR Dexter Jackson was actually the fastest receiver running a 4.27 forty. The other prospect that I have to mention without delay is small school quarterback Josh Johnson from San Diego, during t

For most of the top division 1 players, the list is uneventful, already assured of selection in the early rounds, some won’t even bother to attend the NFL Scouting Combine. The elite players are worried that an mediocre performance might hurt their already lofty draft status and maybe they are worried about an injury. scouting for girls
One of my idle comments about the iPhone was that it would be good if it could also control iTunes remotely. I was thinking it would be good to replace the little white Front Row controllers with a way to do the same from the phone. Well, five minutes on the Apple site and I discovered Signal, which does what I wanted in a rather clever way. It hooks via wifi into a networked iTunes library giving a controllable web display of all the albums and play lists on the iPhone. Then use normal iPod style control to skip through the tracks and play them back through a Mac or Airport Express. It was as simple as drag and drop to set up and I now have a Signal page in Safari on the iPhone, which can play either the tracks on the iMac where I'm sitting right now (Ok, kind of pointless) or on the mini mac connected to the hi-fi in the lounge. So remote music piped around the house over the airport express, driven from the phone. Slightly mad, but surprisingly addictive.

Scouting For Girls - She's So Lovely
      - I'm not sure if the infectious nature of 'She's So Lovely' sits well with me. Occasionally, bands like London based indie-poppers Scouting For Girls tend to break through to an audience during arguably the driest season of quality, and somehow manage a smash hit. It's hard to determine whether Scouting For Girls are one of those bands, as 'She's So Lovely' is a corker of a single, and has "one hit wonder" written all over its shiny visage. This could well be a good head start for the quirky trio, as their profile in the UK is doubtlessly higher than that of the many, many facsimiles currently circulating with little or no mainstream recognition. The song itself is rather charming, with their quasi-cockney delivery and cheeky, boyish swagger making their appeal all the more accessible. Take Blur's warm, interminable charisma, the light-weight enthral of Lit, and the eccentric, melodious idiocy of Madness, mix them gently in a pork pie hat, shove it in front of a piano and

Scouting Out the Ideal Tenant By Ajeet Khurana
Property investment is among the more lucrative types of investment. It may be a little expensive at first, but having a house of one’s own can add a lot of security to life. For instance, one can rent it out and earn a decent income from it without the trouble of it all. A good rental plan can stand one in good stead during periods of financial crisis. After all, here is a steady income that is not likely to disappear. At least, it won’t disappear unless the tenant himself is unable to pay it. When it comes to renting out one’s house, one runs that risk. That is why one should not neglect thorough checks on the potential tenant. Scouting the D'Backs, Part II
Yesterday the focus was on Arizona's hitting, which we found out isn't the best. So, why do the D'backs have the best record in the N.L.? Pitching, pitching and more pitching. Well, that and a little bit of luck. Arizona finished with a 4.13 ERA, seventh in the majors. Wait...the Cubs were fourth (4.04)? Wow. Anyway, the D'backs also led the league in saves (51), were third in shutouts (12) and fourth in complete games (seven). So today, doing the take on Arizona's starters and bullpen. Only focusing on Arizona's top four, because it's 100 percent likely the Game One starter would pitch in Game Five. First up, the rotation: 1. Scouting the D-Backs, Part I
Well, here we are. Two days off until all the superstitions begin again, and heavy drinking once again commences. While we're still enjoying the fruits of this team's labor, today begins a two-part look against the Cubs' NLDS opponent, the Arizona Diamondbacks. Before anything though, here's a quick 2007 recap of the Snakes: With a 90-72 record, the D'backs have homefield advantage throughout the playoffs until the Cubs knock them out. Their home record is 50-31, while on the road, Arizona is 40-41. Here's what's most interesting about Arizona, however: The team was outscored 732-712 during the season, making the Diamondbacks the first-ever team in MLB history to capture the league's best record while being outscored during the regular season. Thisyear's "Just Sayin'" Stat 'o the Day: Arizona is one of just five teams ever to make the playoff while being outscored. Of those five, four were swept out of the first round. However, the other, Minnesota, went on to win the World

From watching game film on a daily basis to actually practicing strategy for upcoming games, it is a wonder that coaches have enough time to do it all. In reality, such a tight schedule is sometimes just too much to handle. That's why modern coaches are turning to statistical scouting software. Statistical scouting software tracks the competition, allowing coaches and players to get to know their opponents in a more succinct and timely manner. Centenary of Scouting
2007 is the centenary of the Scout Movement. 100 years ago in 1907, Scouting started with an experimental camp held on Brownsea Island in Dorset led by war veteran Lord Robert Baden-Powell. Prompted by his famous book “Scouting for Boys” published in 1908, Scout groups were set up throughout the country, and quickly expanded to other parts of the British Empire. In 1920 the first World Scout Jamboree was held in 1920 at Olympia in London and was an inside exhibition of Scouting. The second, held four years later held in Copenhagen was the first international Scout camp which set the tradition of Scout Jamborees. Today Scouting has twenty-five million members world-wide (not counting Guides) and is still growing. Approximately four million of those are from the United States, the largest single Scout Association. There are 155 countries with internationally recognised National Scout Organisations. There are more than 28 million Scouts, youth and adults, boys and girls in 216
