Toilets at Savannah's Molly MacPherson's Scottish Pub as Cozy and Comfortable as the Rest of the Place
Molly MacPherson's Scottish Pub & Grill311 West Congress StreetSavannah, GA USAwww.macphersonspub.comWhere is it?The place has a familiar British pub setup, with distinct areas for the bar, dining area and games (darts, etc.).To find the bathrooms from the entrance, walk to the rear of the establishment, keeping the bar on your left and the dining area on your right. When you near the back wall, you'll see a small hallway open on your right. Go down there to find the toilets. The men's room is labeled "Lads," the women's "Lassies."What's it like? This friendly tavern, located across the street from Savannah's popular City Market, boasts one of the best Scotch selections I've seen in an American pub and an impressive assortment of bottled beers. The pub grub is also pretty top-notch, fea

      Great Scottish Castles (1)
Scotland's turbulent history has left an enduring mark on the landscape in shape of the many castles, fortresses and tower houses that pepper the countryside. Some - such as Edinburgh or Stirling - rank amongst Europe's most impressive structures while other less grand examples provide a stark insight into darker times. The first time I landed in Scotland, one of my goals was to visit every single castle. That until I found a book that lists them all. There are thousands castles scattered in Scotland! Even to visit all castles in Aberdeen and Grampian area will take years, unless if I do it every day. Maybe. In the mean time, I set my goal to be a simpler one: visit all famous castles first. Here are 5 of them: Edinburgh Castle, EdinburghScotland's most important and famous castle. I can't

      Scottish Fold Cats
Scottish Folds are calm, placid cats that enjoy staying indoors. However, they can also be playful, and are known for their excellent hunting skills. They are highly affectionate and gentle, which makes them ideal family cats. They are also quite adaptable, so they do well in noisy houses full of people or with a single, quiet owner in an apartment. They have a sweet, quiet voice that they use sparingly. This breed requires a simple weekly grooming.

New Zealand, West Coast, Scottish Highlands, island's geographic character
On the west coast the "plains" are tiny patches interrupted by rocky headlands and backed by high and difficult mountain country as far south as the mouth of the Grey. The peculiar multilevel "plain" of Westland lies south of that river and extends for less than a hundred miles. There may once have been a relatively level or slightly rolling plateau surface at some height above the sea; perhaps the coast has since risen a good deal. The steep slopes of the western mountains and their present heavy precipitation suggest that a great load of detritus would have been available to build such a marginal plain. In this now elevated mass the short, swift, mountain rivers have since cut valleys with the same marked development of terraces which is so generally characteristic of the valleys of the

For now I'm calling the column "Holyrood Herald", but we may come up with a better name (suggestions are welcome). Over the next several weeks a roundup from the Welsh Parliament ("Senedd Scan"?) will be added, and I'm working on similar roundups from Stormont and Brussels/Strasburg. The Roundup of the Papers will be out in the early evening today, and will be - shall we say - idiosyncratic. He led the Scottish forces to victory over the English at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. It was a victory that ensured Scottish independence and enabled the Scots people to enjoy their freedom for several centuries.Podcast version here Like Wallace before him, Robert the Bruce had many setbacks and almost gave in to despair. Scottish expert reconstructs Bach’s face without his permission
After many experts at first mistakenly assumed that the face actually belonged to that strange old fat broad neighbor lady from downstairs, Scottish forensic scientist Kate Connolly has confirmed that the face she just reconstructed in Germany is none other than the one that once belonged to the legendary and long dead baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Using Bach’s death mask, a “laser”, and other super-ultra-mega-modern technology, Connolly not only reconstructed the face in record time, she and those who hired her made good on their threat and have now unveiled it to the public, as well. Already having reconstructed the faces of Pharaoh Ramses II and Santa Claus (some call him Saint Nicholas), she is confident that Bach’s new face is 70% accurate. “Like, this is likel

Alex Salmond gains more support for Scottish independence
A new poll for the Sunday Herald has recorded a 5% incraese in support for Scottish independence. When asked whether Scotland should negotiate with the UK government for a settlement for independence, 40% of people agreed.Does this simply reflect the recent (illegal) antics of the Scottish Labour party (HERE and HERE) making voters willing to consider any alternative to oust Labour even if the main agenda of the only credible alternative is independence for Scotland - or is there an increasingly genuine desire to go it alone?Salmond is certainly pursuing policies to wind up those south of the border, especially the south-east. His most recent proposal are to freeze council tax. Unless the English keep cool and make a strong case for the Union, he may get his way. It's shambolic that a botched programme of devolution has threatened the Union. It's more shambolic that there's no offer of a solution from the head-in-the-sand-don't-ask-the-West-Lothian-question Labour government.

Leaving for my Scottish Christmas in an hour!
I am so stoked! I am packed and ready to go and the airport shuttle picks me up in an hour. I decided on Thanksgiving day that I didn't want to have another pitiful holiday, so I wrote to Cousin Sabby (who happens to live in Scotland) and booked my flight. Sabby works for Motorola and does something in the customer service field. Two years ago she had the chance to move over there and decided to take it. Sabby drives me nuts sometimes but it is a free place to stay and she is going to try and take me to all kinds of places while I'm there. I definitely want to see some cool old haunted castles! On Christmas day she has a bunch of single friends coming over for a "Singles Christmas" party. Could be fun! I didn't want to arrive empty handed so my suitcase is full of little Christmas presents for Sabby. Some Sees chocolates, a bottle of brandy (her favorite), a handmade cashmere scarf that I found on this website called Etsy, and a photo frame for one of her self portraits.

Scottish Housing Market Still Strong As Edinburgh Levels
House prices in Edinburgh have fallen by 5.6% for the past three months, but that’s the only part of Scotland that has had a drop in prices over that period. Although prices have fallen, over the past year they have still grown substantially. At the beginning of November, prices in Edinburgh were 18% higher than a year ago, and they are the highest in Scotland with an average price of £220,066.

Scottish Castles hired as hideaways for the super rich Once upon a time, Scottish castles were associated with wild chieftains exacting brutal retribution on their neighbours and crofters. This led to a lot of new properties being built of a less

      Scottish Art on Fire
Artery Gallery is a leader amongst Scottish art galleries and has become known for not only its diverse collection of contemporary art, but also for its broad range of national and international artists with their own unique backgrounds. One particular Scottish artist who fits this mold and is on constant exhibition at Artery Gallery with his 'Flaming Art', is professional artist from Airdrie, Derek Collins. Derek creates stunning works of abstract art by pouring carefully selected special resins, powders, pigments and liquids on to canvas. His creations really come to life when the main ingredient is added, fire! Derek’s art is an extension of the specialist paint effects he has been applying for many years. Everlasting Joy and a Scottish Highland Cow
1 Thessalonians 5:16 Be joyful alwaysMy brother Alan is a great photographer and he recently posted a picture of a Scottish Highland Cow. I’m thinking of creating a poster with it and putting today’s verse below it. The Scottish cow is one of the most somber creatures on earth, which never seems to smile. It has long horns and equally long shaggy red hair. It’s a dearly beloved animal in Scotland and once seen, you never forget them. (I’ve tried to insert Alan’s picture with this devotional). When Paul writes to the Thessalonian church and urges them to be joyful always, he isn’t ordering them to stick a smile on their faces everywhere they go. There’s nothing worse than meeting Christians with that phony tele-evangelist smile on their faces that you know is incredibly insincere. He’s talking about the joy that we are meant to carry in our hearts each day because we know that we have been saved by Jesus. Of all people on earth, Christians should have an inward happiness

      Scottish Halloween
Did you know that many of the most famous Halloween traditions have ancient Scottish origins? The Celtic festival Samhain is one of the four quarter festivals, and the first day of the Celtic new year. This transition between old and new year was a time of fire festival. Halloween, All Hallows E’en, is the night where lanterns (Gaelic: samhnag) and Hallowfires were supposed to scare wandering souls or spirits away before All Saints Day on 1st November. In Gaelic, Samhuinn means hallow-tide or season, and Samhuinn is used in Gaelic for the entire month of November.Samhain was a Celtic harvest festival marking the end of summer and celebrating the old New Year at the turn of the season into winter, and many of the traditional activities were connected with food. The ancient Scots invented many practices to appease the spirits which they thought were on the roam at this time. For example, the ‘spirits’ would be offered parcels of food. This was the origin of the practice of guising, a

Nazi attack on Scottish war graves
VANDALS have painted swastikas and Nazi symbols over graves of Scottish soldiers who died in the Battle of the Somme. French police are hunting the vandals who attacked the graves of 32 soldiers killed during the First World War in the battle for Contalmaison. The incident has resulted in thousands of pounds' of damage in an attack described by a Scottish historian as an "appalling desecration" days before Remembrance Sunday. Peake Wood Cemetery, near the village of Contalmaison, records 103 fallen Allied soldiers and is one of many small plots scattered across battlefields, each with their distinctive white headstones administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGS). The cemetery marks the spot from which the final assault was made on Contalmaison on 1 July, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme and the scene of much heavy fighting by Scottish battalions. The site is yards from a memorial to McCrae's Battalion, the celebrated Edinburgh unit formed with a la

      And Another Scottish Joke…
In the Northern Highlands, an impatient farmer knocked at the door of neighboring farmhouse. The daughter of the house answered. “Is your father in ? ” asked the neighbor. “No. ” said the daughter. ” He’s at the Inverness farmers market. If it’s the services of the red Ayrshire bull you want, the cost is $50.00″ “No it’s not that” said the neighbor. ” Well. ” said the daughter. ” If it’s the Galloway belted bull you want, it’s $40.” “No, it’s not that. ” said the neighbor. ” How about the small Highland bull?” said the daughter. ” The service of that bull is only $30.” The neighbor rudely interrupted the daughter. ” That’s not what I’ve come about. Your brother Sandy has made my daughter Fiona pregnant. My wife and I want to know what your father proposes to do about it.” ” Oh, well.” said the daughter. &rdqu

      Japanese Love Scottish Indie Bands
Japanese music fans are crazy about Scottish indie bands. Organisers of the Connect Festival, in Scotland say that over 150 tickets have been purchased by people in Japan. They are willing to travel to Scotland for a weekend. This year’s show has a high number of alternative Scottish bands playing. Here are some of the big names: Teenage Fanclub, the Trashcan Sinatras, Mogwai and the Jesus & Mary Chain. And they are not just popular with Japanese fans. There have been ticket sales from Brazil, Dubai and Australia. How did this all start? In Tokyo, there is a promoter who works solely on gigs for Scottish bands, particularly Glasgow ones, and can sell out concerts without radio or television promotion. I’d like to hire this promoter! They’re so good they are getting fans going crazy. Some say it’s the honesty that grabs them. Also, the indie factor. The Japanese love new things. Spent Grains from Whisky and Beer Production Potential Source of Biofuel to Power Scottish Cars
If anyone can turn whisky into gasoline it's the Scots. With the help of a grant researchers at Abertay University are examining how to make biofuel from spent grain. The researchers hope to find a way to reuse the residue from whisky and beer production. The Scottish scientists hope to find an economical way to create bioethanol, which burns cleaner than petroleum based fuel.Professor Graeme Walker will lead the year-long study, which has to overcome challenges in converting spent grain into fuel. The process is more difficult than producing bioethanol from virgin materials. Currently spent grain from stills is either used for animal feed or discarded.
