The Last King of Scotland...A Movie Review!
With lots of family around for the festivities of the July 4th holiday, the late evenings were spent laying in bed watching television to unwind. I was lucky enough to come across this 2007 nugget that earned its star, Forest Whitaker, the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role Oscar and Golden Globe Awards in 2007! I had heard great things about this movie when it was released but never

Scotland Oil Strike, U.S. Food Rationing
I just read at Yahoo that Scotland oil workers are striking over pension issues. The refinery that has been shut down because of the strike supplies "almost a third of Britain's North Sea oil."That's nuts... Hmm... I thought the major oil problems were that we're running out, and that the Middle East has a lot of it. But now there are problems with oil that have nothing to do with the substance at all!I also heard American store Costco has begun rationing bags of rice. I think each bag weighs 16 pounds. And a customer is only allowed 3 per visit. Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show" said it's no big deal, that's still a lot. But the fact that rationing has begun seems scary. Sure, in a place with "plenty" of resources, you'd set initial rations to be huge. But over time they can get s

As a direct result of the strike many motorists in Scotland were panic-buying and created queues which sometimes lead to empty petrol stations. Some filling stations implemented fuel rationing and spending was limited to £20 per customer. Prices of fuel also have gone up.So far the situation on Islay seems "business as usual." I heard from several people that there are no shortages yet, and they are not expecting any in the first few

Autism Crisis In Scotland - Invisible Autistic Adults
In Scotland Lacks Autism Services I commented on an article on healthcarerepublic on July 6, 2007 and the lack of services for people with autism in Scotland. That article, Call to find autism early in Scotland, focused on guidelines published by the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) calling on doctors to look for signs of autism in children and adolescents, including problems with social interaction and play, speech and behaviours. The article also expressed the doubt of many professionals in Scotland that early diagnosis would make much difference because of the lack of autism services available in Scotland. In Revealed: ‘invisible’ adults living with autism, the Sunday Herald today reports, on an impending report by the National Autistic Society, the lack of service

Grasspoint Cottage, Isle of Mull, Scotland
Situated on a peninsular in the north west of the Isle of Mull, Grasspoint cottage is where we spent a week of our Honeymoon in September 2007, with a view of the sea out of every window and hardly a soul in sight it makes for a perfect romantic getaway.

Once upon a time in the west of Scotland
Today is January 25th, the anniversary of Robert Burns birth. In Scotland and throughout the world many people will be sitting down to eat a Burns Supper. And I suppose you expect me to say something about it. Okay, I've never been to a Burns Supper in my puff, I've never worn a kilt, I hate whisky and I was a grown man before I tried my first haggis. Burns, for me, is inseparable from primary school where we were force-fed the stuff. And then there were the competitions, sing-songs and visits to the Burns Museum. I can't even look back and feel the slightest wee bit sentimental about it because I don't. I did win a prize when I was nine or thereabouts for a project on Burns, the prize being a collection of Burns poetry, but that was the highlight of Burns for me. I can't even imagine if I

Oil Paintings - moored boats at Pettycur, Fife, Scotland and a moorland steam near Woodhead Pass, Yorkshire
"Pettycur Harbour", Pettycur, Fife, Scotland 10"x8".Oil on canvas covered board. Alistair Butt © 2008.The reference material for this painting came from an all to brief trip along the Fife coastline two years ago and unfortunately this was the 'only' period of good sunlight for the trip. Pettycur is located on the north bank of the Forth (on the opposite bank is Edinburgh), a small village with a small sandy harbour/harbor with a few interesting boats."Moorland Stream", nr Woodhead Pass, Yorkshire 10"x14".Oil on canvas covered board. Alistair Butt © 2008.A moorland stream tumbles down the valley very close to the, now closed, Woodhead Tunnel exit (the old railway line) on the infamous Woodhead Pass (1/2 mile looking in the opposite direction of the painting) as it climbs over the Moors b

      Scotland Village Tops
Colorful ink and watercolor painting of village roof tops in Edinburgh, Scotland. A huge cluster of trees in the background formed the backdrop for this nice scene. I wish I could say I was there to do this painting but I cannot say that. It was done from a photo. Regardless, the painting turned out better than the photo primarily because of the loose line work and enhanced colors. 11" x 14"

Fountain Pen Makes a Comeback in Scotland

Donald Trump's Scotland Golf Plan Rejected
It's not everyday Donal Trump faces a rejection. But his plan to build a £1 billions (that's Rp 20 trillions or about one-third of Indonesia State Budget of Revenues and Expenditures!) golf complex and housing development at the Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire was rejected last weekend by Aberdeenshire Council's infrastructure committee. It doesn't matter that the development could bring £150m to the local economy over the next decade and creating 400 jobs. It doesn't matter that the reason why Donald Trump chose Scotland in the first place is because he's half Sottish, while he could choose some other place which would easily say yes to whatever his proposal is.I'm sure if this happens in Indonesia the local council will have voted yes even before seeing and reviewing the proposal, just because he is Donald Trump. So, should we suggest Indonesia to Mr.Trump?

      Scotland Win World Cup
Scotland have won the World Cup… of Golf.  Well done lads!  About time too! In other World Cup news, Scotland seem to have a decent draw for the FIFA World Cup qualifying.  Holland, Us, Norway, Iceland and Macedonia.  Not bad, although when listening to the radio after the draw someone said… ‘Holland… could be worse!’ to which Richard Gordon replied ‘Yes… because they only beat us 6-0 the last time we played them!’.  I have a good feeling about the group.  An interesting coupld of years of international football ahead.

Scotland Win their first Golf World Cup
Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren will take the World Cup back to the home of golf for the first time after beating the United States on the third hole of a sudden death playoff on Sunday. A fourth par of the day at the 18th proved enough for the Scots to defeat overnight leaders Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum, pick up a cheque for $800,000 each and make amends for their own playoff defeat by Germany last year. "To come back after a playoff loss last year and win is superb, particularly as my playoff record is rubbish," Montgomerie told reporters after finally getting his hands on the John Hopkins trophy at the ninth attempt. The Americans had looked set for victory when the Scots twice found the sand on the first extra hole but Warren nailed a 12-foot putt for par and Slocum just missed a seven-foot birdie effort. Slocum had successfully drained a birdie putt just two feet shorter at the same green to force the playoff, giving the Americans a five-under 67 to match the S

Scotland Robbed of Euro 08 Glory
With Euro 2008 qualification at stake, Italy showed the rest of European football why they were the reigning world champions. Right at the death, they snatched a 2-1 victory from Scotland, thanks to a header from Christian Panucci. The Azzurri made it through, along with France, and normal order is restored for a competition in danger of losing viewerships due to the absence of prestigious teams. After booking their ticket to next summer’s footballing extravaganza in Switzerland and Austria, Italy manager Roberto Donadoni fired the first salvo at his counterparts with an affirmation that his team has grown even stronger since their World Cup glory. He said: “This team can go head-to-head with any team in the world and not fear them. The Scotland game was an excellent match. Every game this Italy team play we add more and get stronger.” Italy took the lead in the second minute of play. A quick throw-in caught the Scottish defence off-gurad, allowing Luca Toni to toe-poke from
