In many states, citizens and scientists are accusing the CDC's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry of ignoring scientific evidence of connections between public health problems and industrial sources of pollution.Recently, a nonprofit investigative journalism group, The Center for Public Integrity, published a suppressed study by the agency called "Public Health Implications of Hazardous Substances in the Twenty-Six U.S. Great Lakes Areas of Concern." The report concludes that over 9 million people have elevated health risks resulting from exposure to dioxins, pesticides, lead, mercury, PCBs and other poisonous chemicals. Scientists discovered low birth weights, high infant mortality rates, high rates of premature births, and high rates of death from breast, colon and lung can

The benefits of scientific notation do not end with ease of writing and expression of accuracy. Such notation also lends itself well to mathematical problems of multiplication and division. Let's say we wanted to know how many electrons would flow past a point in a circuit carrying 1 amp of electric current in 25 seconds. If we know the number of electrons per second in the circuit (which we do), then all we need to do is multiply that quantity by the number of seconds (25) to arrive at an answer of total electrons: (6,250,000,000,000,000,000 electrons per second) x (25 seconds) = 156,250,000,000,000,000,000 electrons passing by in 25 seconds Using scientific notation, we can write the problem like this: (6.25 x 1018 electrons per second) x (25 seconds) If we take
In many disciplines of science and engineering, very large and very small numerical quantities must be managed. Some of these quantities are mind-boggling in their size, either extremely small or extremely large. Take for example the mass of a proton, one of the constituent particles of an atom's nucleus: Proton mass = 0.00000000000000000000000167 grams Or, consider the number of electrons passing by a point in a circuit every second with a steady electric current of 1 amp: 1 amp = 6,250,000,000,000,000,000 electrons per second A lot of zeros, isn't it? Obviously, it can get quite confusing to have to handle so many zero digits in numbers such as this, even with the help of calculators and computers. Take note of those two numbers and of the relative sparsity of n

John D. Mayer, PhDUniversity of New Hampshire Emotional intelligence is a product of two worlds. One is the popular culture world of best-selling books, daily newspapers and magazines. The other is the world of scientific journals, book chapters and peer review. Most people, I suspect, became familiar with emotional intelligence through the popular 1995 book, "Emotional Intelligence," by Dr. Daniel Goleman or through the many mass-market books, articles and television programs that followed in its wake. Attendees of last year's APA Annual Convention heard the popular version of emotional intelligence at the opening session. Others read about it in the APA Monitor. Emotional intelligence, according to Time magazine, "may be the best predictor of success in life." According to the book "E

The book of Revelation includes so many ridiculous and horrible prophesies, it's obvious that "St. John" was either consciously trying to scare people into submission or he was on some kind of psychedelic substance; or both.To me, one of his most revealing claims is that the stars will fall to the earth. Of course at the time of his writing, people didn't know just how big and far away the stars really are. To them, they were just little lights in the sky. But if his "visions" where really coming from an omniscient god, wouldn't he have known? Here are the verses in question:Revelation 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.Revelation 8:10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star f

And then Egon replies, "I think they're more interested in my epididymus."You can tell by looking at Venkman's face that he'd like to respond, but he's not quite sure what Egon meant, or was referencing. What is the epididymus?I thought maybe it was like epidermis... That old joke, "Hey, your epidermis is showing!" (Your skin is showing -- like skin on your arm or neck) But... I had to look it up.Eww, the epididymus is gross!

Fredrick W. Taylor developed a set of four management principles:

3. Managers should cooperate with workers
4. Responsibilities should be divided equally between managers and workers

Christina Laun takes us through 23 tips towards gaining and retaining attention on your website - pay attention to eye-tracking studies :Eye-tracking studies are hot in the web design world, but it can be hard to figure out how to translate the results of these studies into real design implementations. These are a few tips from eye-tracking studies that you can use to improve the design of your webpage.
Text attracts attention before graphics. Contrary to what you might think, the first thing users look at on a website isn’t the images. Most casual users will be coming to your site looking for information, not images, so make sure your website is designed so that the most important parts of your text are what is most prominent.

I've seen people change their name, hair color, eye color, even in some cases their height. However, as reported in the The New England Journal of Medicine today, a 9 year old girl has switched her blood type. This is a first in recorded human history and a major finding which encourages future transplant and stem cell research. Granted the switch was from O- to O+ it's still a first and has allowed the girl to better tolerate her transplanted liver. The very basic theory is that stem cells from the donor's liver were able to colonize the child's bone marrow and effectively made the switch from O- to O+. In other science news US researchers are one step closer to creating artificial life after having successfully made from scratch the DNA of a bacteria. They're calling it "Mycoplasm

Although my knowledge of Arabic is basic, Alhamdulillah I have discovered that the scholars have failed to translate the Qur'an faithfully, particularly into the English language. For example Zauj is translated as wife rather than spouse. Alaq is translated as blood clot or congealed blood rather than leech or something that clings. Similarly very few people know the meaning of Nikah or Zina.Science means knowledge or "ILM" in Arabic, or systematic study of Natural Phenomena or Ayah(in Arabic). God

I was also going to the gym for 3 hours a day, every weekday. So I had a number of factors working for me. Then it all turned. I started a job with an hour commute to and from my house. I stopped going to the gym. I started traveling all over the country and eating all sorts of rich food. So I ended up putting the weight back on. There wasn't as much of it!For every hour a day that children under three watched violent child-oriented entertainment on TV, their risk doubled for attention problems five years later, according to the study released Monday in November's issue of the journal of Pediatrics. The University of Washington researchers called a show violent if it involved fighting, hitting people, threats or other violence that was central to the plot or a main character. Shows listed included Power Rangers, Lion King and Scooby Doo.Even non-violent shows like Rugrats and The Flintstones carried a still substantial —although slightly lower — risk for attention problems, according to the researchers. On the other ha
Some days I think I’m the only person on the planet that has yet to do a study or a survey. I’m not talking about participating in one, but actually creating and compiling the data.
Some seem a bit more credible than others. One I read today came to kind of an oxymoronic (spell check really hates that word) conclusion.
Their claim is that exercise is more important in preventing or controlling diabetes than weight loss. If a person is exercising to the extent that they recommend, one hour per day, and watching their diet at all, they should be losing weight. If they are losing weight and exercising, what event gets to claim credit for the healthier person?
The only way I can see this study gaining any validity is if they only use compensators in their study. In a post a few days ago we discussed a compensator as someone who strikes a balance between exercise calories burned and caloric intake. In this manner they are able to exercise to their heart’s delight without l

US scientists have successfully managed to 'engineer' a line of mice that display remarkable physical prowess and ability. In some English newspapers, it was referred to as "The Mouse that Shook the World", and of course, many have termed it Mighty Mouse.Being scientists, we have no problem with that, and the achievement of the scientists, led by Professor Richard Hanson, in creating the mice by injecting a gene for an enzyme called PEP-CK is a remarkable one (we won't go into the details here). But what is unfortunate is how the scientific and journalistic integrity of exercise science and physiology was then compromised by what can only be described as very bad and very scientifically inaccurate attempts to translate this information for the public, by both the scientists and the media. Now, we have no issue with this - we feel very strongly at The Science of Sport that complex science should be 'packaged' in a more easy to understand, entertaining form, but unfortunately, what P
via CrackedWe found out recently that if you try to leave a little kid in a graveyard late at night, he'll freak out. Even if you offer to leave him a gun to protect himself. Why? It's because on some instinctual level, all humans know it's just a matter of time until the zombies show up.
A scientific paper published in 1955 has been retracted by its author, Dr. Homer Jacobson, when he discovered creationists were citing his work as “proof that life could not have emerged on earth without divine intervention”.
The paper, “Information, Reproduction and the Origin of Life” (American Scientist, Sigma Xi, 1955), focused on the properties of chemicals found on Earth during the cooling-down period known as Hadean Time. It contained assertions that several conditions would need to occur simultaneously in order for these organic molecules to form, described in the paper as “incredibly unlikely”.
After googling his name for reasons of “vanity”, Dr. Jacobson came across some of his work on polymers. When creationist websites referencing his 1955 paper started appearing, he described the search results as “hideous”.
This prompted Dr. Jacobson to look over his work, and in doing so he identified a few errors - not the leas
A three-year position as research fellow (PhD position) is available at the Department of Mathematics. The position is part of the project “Geological Storage of CO2: Mathematical Modelling and Risk Assessment”, a joint effort of the University of Bergen and SINTEF Applied Mathematics, Oslo. The project aims at strengthening the scientific understanding of the risks associated with storage of CO2 for the purpose of reducing atmospheric emissions. The investigations are related to the study of non-linear partial differential equations arising from the multi-phase flow in porous media. Methods from Scientific Computing will be applied, i.e. the investigations will involve mathematical and numerical models, numerical simulations and their physical and mathematical interpretation. The candidate is expected to work in the multidisciplinary environment of the project (applied mathematics, computational science and engineering). The candidate is expected to spend 3 to 6 months abroad collab

I understand that musicians are creative people, and as such, tend to think a bit "outside the box." And that's fine. Without this creative streak running through them, they'd not be able to write, create, and perform the music we love, and the world would be a lot less interesting, as places go. That said, perhaps when it comes to things like naming another human being, they should pause, breathe, and realize their kids will have to live with that name for the rest of their lives.
What follows is a list of some of the most ridiculous names that musicians have bestowed upon their children. To give you a clue as to how bad some of these are? Nobody with the last name "Zappa" even made the cut.
Scientific American October 2007PDF | 88 Pages | 11 MB Scientific American is a popular-science magazine, published (first weekly and later monthly) since August 28, 1845, making it the oldest continuously published magazine in the United States. It brings articles about new and innovative research to the amateur and lay audience.Scientific American (informally abbreviated to "SciAm") had a monthly circulation of roughly 555,000 US and 90,000 international as of December 2005.[1] It is a well-respected publication despite not being a peer-reviewed scientific journal, such as Nature; rather, it is a forum where scientific theories and discoveries are explained to a wider audience. In the past scientists interested in fields outside their own areas of expertise made up the magazine's target audience. Now, however, the publication is aimed at educated general readers who are interested in scientific issues. The magazine American Scientist covers similar ground but at a level more suita
