      Senator Schumer: Surrender Now! [Digg]
Mr. Schumer proposes to please Mr. Putin by abandoning NATO's plans to provide Poland, the Czech Republic, and Romania with a missile defense. That defense, quoth Mr. Schumer, "mocks Mr. Putin's dream of eventually restoring Russian hegemony over Eastern Europe."

REGULATORS TELL SCHUMER: BEAR STEARNS’ CASH SHORTAGE WAS UNKNOWN UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE, SHOWING NEED FOR REGULATORY REFORM Washington, D.C. - Under questioning today by U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer Urges Review of Countrywide Financial Collateral
Schumer Urges Review of Countrywide Financial Collateral Senator Charles Schumer has urged the regulator of the Federal Home Loan Banks to undertake a special review of the loans that Countrywide Bank has pledged to collateralize $51 billion in advances from the FHLBank of Atlanta. The thrift subsidiary of Countrywide Finance increased its advance borrowings in the third quarter by $28.2 billion, up nearly 80% from those of the previous quarter. In a letter to the Federal Housing Finance Board, Schumer urged the regulator to “probe” the underlying risk of Countrywide’s collateral, which includes payment option mortgages. The senator said in a CNBC-TV interview that he has concerns about the Atlanta FHLBank’s ability to assess the risk of Countrywide’s collateral. “At a time when Countrywide’s mortgage portfolio is deteriorating, the Federal Home Loan Bank’s exposure to Countrywide poses an unreasonable risk,” the Senate Banking C

Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein have no Spines
Failure: On an 11-8 vote, with two Democrats joining all nine Republicans, the committee sent President George W. Bush’s nomination of Mukasey to the full Democratic-led Senate for anticipated confirmation as chief U.S. law enforcement officer. The vote is likely to take place next week. Contrary to what Senator Schumer would have you believe, a vote for Mukasey is a vote for torture. Not surprisingly, Schumer and Feinstein were the offenders. The two committee Democrats who voted for Mukasey were Charles Schumer of New York, who had suggested Bush nominate the former judge as attorney general, and Dianne Feinstein of California. In California and New York, two of the bluest states in the country, Democratic Senators are voting with Republicans on key matters of national importance. Shameless. Email this post...

Schumer asks for tough review of Dubai-Nasdaq deal
“I believe that the acquisition of such a large stake in a U.S. exchange by a foreign government raises some serious questions,” Schumer wrote to Paulson. The senator asked for a review of national security concerns associated with the deal under a yet-to-be-enacted law providing for such reviews. The law takes effect this fall. Terms of the pact call for the government holding company to buy a nearly 20% stake in the Nasdaq Stock Market

Schumer wants to soften limits on Fannie, Freddie
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) proposed legislation last week to push up the caps on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac's mortgage portfolios by a minimum of 10 percent for one year in an effort to ease the credit crunch.Under the bill, 50 percent of the approximately $73 billion combined boost in their portfolios would be put toward refinancing subprime adjustable-rate mortgages into less costly loans; and the conforming loan limit would be raised to $625,000 in the priciest housing markets during the one-year period.Though Schumer insists that "this is what Fannie and Freddie were designed for," such a move is opposed by the Bush administration as reported in Wall Street Journal (09/10/07) by Damian Paletta.Naturally, the Bush administration would be against raising the conforming loan limit to $625,000 in the priciest housing markets. The priciest housing markets including Manhattan are in blue states. While subprime has not been a big issue in affluent co-op dominated Manhattan, raising the

Links 7/30: Drug Lobby, Poverty in Iraq, US Sells Arms to the Gulf, Schumer Helps Hedge Funds, Obama on the Environment, Climate Change & Hurricanes
“You push this bill through that produces a windfall for the drug companies. And then a short time later, you go to work for the drug lobby at a salary of $2 million. That doesn’t look good.” Take a look at this facinating story from Sunday’s 60 Minutes, about the disturbing relationship between Congress and the drug lobby. Oxfam has released a report saying nearly half of Iraqis live in absolute poverty, and 8 million are in need of immediate humanitarian aid. President Bush is trying to sell Persian Gulf countries $20 billion worth of new, sophisticated arms, in exchange for their cooperation in containing Iran. (Hmmm, this sounds like one of those annoying tidbits Bill O’Reilly’s successors will be denying on television in a few years…) High-profile New York Senator Chuck Schumer is breaking with Democratic party lines, pledging to protect his hedge-funded constituents from overly burdensome taxes. With an exceptionally strong rating from th

      Schumer: Investigate Big Oil
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-New York) wants to investigate Big Oil in an attempt to find out why so many refineries are out and gas prices are soaring to record highs.I must admit, I'm perhaps the most skeptical person of Big Oil around, but unless Schumer can prove the oil companies are at least partially involved in the price hikes, we've been down this road before, I think the Senate has more important things to worry about...like, passing a bill at some point.Nevertheless, oversight is good.

      Schumer: Gonzales Must Go
Our own Senator Schumer is the first member of Congress to call for Attorney Generral Alberto Gonzales to resign.Gonzales has had a pretty bad week to say the least, thanks to, first of, the recent PATRIOT Act problem; Gonzales and FBI director Robert Mueller acknowledged the FBI had broken the law to secretly pry out personal information about people in the U.S. as part of its pursuit of suspected terrorists and spies. This does not bode well for those arguing the PATRIOT Act does not infringe on people's civil liberties. Then there's the recent federal prosecutor firing scandal. A group of federal prosecutors, all Republicans, were recently fired for "performance problems." These prosecutors complain they were fired for either bringing ethics complaints against Republicans or failing to do so against Democrats...political reasons...not a reason to be fired.Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware) stated Gonzales is "better off" if he resigned, while Senator Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania) rema

      Senator Charles Schumer, Businessman???
Senator Schumer, apparently knows more about how a private business should run than the owners.  Shouldn’t our elected officials try to do something of value with our highly inefficient, bloated government instead of meddling in private enterprise?  Yes, I know, the NFL benefits from tax dollars for things like stadium funds.  That is more of a testament to the wastefulness of government with our tax dollars than an excuse to run the NFL.  U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer has asked the National Football League to assemble a schedule that will help reduce TV blackouts involving Buffalo Bills games at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The New York Democrat forwarded his request to Commissioner Roger Goodell saying a more favorable slate will allow fans throughout Western New York to see the Bills. In 2006, the Bills had four late-season home games and, with the team virtually out of playoff contention, none sold out in time to lift the local TV blackout. NFL rules states that, un

      Schumer, Clinton, and Iran
Interesting, but short editorial in the New York Sun this morning regarding recent statements by Schumer and Clinton on Iran. Schumer (11/29/06): "I really think that they are an evil country, and do you talk to an evil country?" Clinton (10/31/06): 'accused the Bush administration of "a simplistic division of the world into good and evil. They refuse to talk to anyone on the evil side." She

      Schumer Declares "Reaganism" Dead
Ben Smith writes in the New York Daily News that Democrat Senator Charles Schumer of New York has declared the Reagan philosophy dead:Chuck swung by the Daily News for an editorial board meeting this morning, which you'll be able to read more about in tomorrow's News. A couple of tidbits from his broader discussion (forthcoming in book form) of how he sees the shifting terrain and the Democrats' edge struck me: "We're in better shape than [Republicans] are, because they don't realize that Reaganomics is dead, that the Reagan philosophy is dead," he said. "We realize that New Deal democracy, which is still our paradigm, which is sort of appeal to each group ... that doesn't work any more." He had said a bit earlier, "The old Reagan theory which dominated -- which is, 'Government is bad, it's out of touch, chop off its hands as soon as it moves.' -- is over." Not sure the conservative love affair with Chuck is going to last. I think Chuckie Schumer is getting a little ahead
