School District Director Finds He Needs Hard Drive Encryption
Darrin Pike, director of 120 schools in the Eastern School District of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, has recently found that data security is not always relegated to making sure hackers from China and Russia invade his schools’ networks.   Last week, two teenagers were arrested for stealing computer equipment from an elementary school in the Eastern School District.  The theft resulted in three computers, one of them the school’s mainframe, and two monitors being taken from school grounds.  The school breach involved the names, addresses, phone numbers, and medicare numbers of 84 students.  It isn’t believed, however, that the two went after the computers because of the sensitive information; rather, this was more of a grab‑and‑go situation.  Accord

Morning Thoughts on School District Maps
Up until our most recent move I had never given school district maps much thought. I hadn't needed to. Each city or town we lived in I simply called the district office when we arrived, gave them our children's ages and grades and found out which school they would be attending and went from there. More often than not our suburb or 'town' only had one school for each education level (elementary

Dhimmitude Attitude - Oak Lawn School District 122
No more Christmas parties for everyone? Police intervene in parental shouting match So long Halloween parade. Farewell Santa’s gift shop. The long-celebrated holiday traditions are facing elimination in some Oak Lawn schools this year after complaints the activities are offensive, particularly to Muslim students. Please someone clue me in. How does Christmas and Halloween (a secular holiday BTW) offend muslim students? Will they become damaged beyond repair if they see Christmas or Halloween decorations. Will Santa give them nightmares? Jews do not celebrate Christmas or eat pork and has anyone heard them complaining? No. Parents expect the announcement to add to the tension that’s been building since school administrators agreed earlier this month to change the lunch menu to exclude items containing pork to accommodate Muslim students. News that Jell-O was struck from the menu caused such a stir that officials since have agreed to bring the popular dessert back. That

Sex-abuse lawsuit against Fayette school district goes to jurors
“They want you to ignore the evidence,” said attorney Chris Miller, who argued that the Fayette County Board of Education ignored allegations of sex abuse...“We can’t allow this to happen in our community,” Miller said.Miller asked for $2.16 million in lost wages from the educational opportunities he says Maner, now 45, was denied because of the alleged abuse...Attorney Larry C. Deener, representing the school board, said administrators were not aware of any abuse allegations and did not cause Maner’s injuries. He said Maner’s story is illogical and doesn’t add up...If that’s the case, Deener said, then why didn’t she tell state social workers who investigated child abuse in the Maner household? Why would she allow Maner to go to Florida on spring break with art teacher Roberta Blackwell, an alleged abuser? The case has gone to the jury. This from the Herald-Leader.
