In 2004, Paul Scholes retired from International football in a bid to prolong his status as a world class footballer. There is no doubt Scholes is no longer the player he was but he has used his experience to adapt his game and is contributing an awful lot to Manchester United this season.

I almost peed my pants watching it. We hung on resolutely against waves of Barcelona attacks to set up an all English finals in Moscow. Before the game started, there was already bad news. Rooney and Vidic were both ruled out via the injuries sustained over the weekend. The game itself didn't start off too brightly either. Just as in the first leg, Barcelona commanded the midfield and controlled possession. And just as in the first leg, did little with it.A rare foray forward, caught the Barcelona defense in sixes and sevens, and a weak clearance found
Paul Scholes could make his 100th Champions League appearance against AS Roma at Old Trafford tonight - but the Salford-born schemer won't be donning the captain's armband in recognition of his service. The 33-year-old won't even be considered for the role, according to Sir Alex Ferguson. Not out of disrespect, but because the quiet man of United’s team would not welcome the task.“I won’t be making Scholes captain,” said Sir Alex at his pre-match press conference. “I think he would regard it as a form of punishment!”He may not take the responsibility of the armband, but there can be no denying the midfielder’s influence on the pitch when it comes to his performances. Scholes returned in January from a three-month lay-off after suffering a knee injury in training back in Oct

Manchester United have suffered a huge blow with the news that Paul Scholes will be out for three months. The 32-year-old midfielder has been diagnosed with damaged knee ligaments and will have an operation on Thursday. Scholes picked up the injury in training ahead of the Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev last week. Fellow midfielder Michael Carrick is also sidelined although Owen Hargreaves has recently returned to the side following knee problems. Carrick, who dislocated an elbow against Roma earlier this month, is set to return to training this week and could feature against Arsenal on Saturday. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson also expects captain Gary Neville to be back in action soon. The 32-year-old defender has not played for seven months but is poised to play for the reserves on Thursday. Scholes played an influential role as United captured the Premier League title last season, although his side have been impressive in his absence so far, beating Dynamo Kiev 4-2 and Middlesbrou

The bad news is that we lost the game, and lost Scholes for the second leg. The good news is that we're still in with a shout. Given the circumstances, we were lucky to come away from this fixture with an away goal and only one goal down.Roma were by far the better team right from the go get. They were inventive and vibrant, often catching our make-shift defence off guard. Even with 11 men on the pitch, it was just a matter of time before Roma scored. They were that much hungrier.Of course the turning point happened when Scholes was booked a second time in the 33th minute, and was sent off. Already playing badly, it just made things so much worst for United. To be fair, Scholes was utterly horrendous in his tackles today. Hard the referee been much stricter, he should have gone for an earlier shower. His timing today was just so off that it was painful to watch.Roma scored right at the break, making their man advantage count. To be honest, given the way Roma approached the game, they
Paul Scholes is quite simply one of the best attacking midfielders in the game. His blinding runs through center field make him a nightmare to any defence. His ball-skills and precise vision make him a dangerous deliverer of accurate passes, and his shots from outside the area are truly spectacular.

Paul Scholes reckons his volley in the 3-0 win at Aston Villa is better than the goal he scored direct from a corner at Bradford nearly seven years ago.
At Bradford in March 2000, the United midfielder fired home a scorching volley direct from a David Beckham corner. His thunderbolt at Villa Park was just as impressive, and accoring to the man himself, possibly better than his previous effort."I knew I'd hit it well and I was just happy to see it go in off the underside of the bar," he told MUTV. "I'd probably say it's better than my goal against Bradford."They always look a bit better when they go in off the underside of the bar like the Villa one did!"It's certainly up there [with my best goals]. I found myself in quite a lot of space during most of the corners we had in the game so I was waiting for one. Thankfully one came."It's great to be back amongst the goals - it's been a while since I've scored [against Liverpool in October]," he added. "I haven't scored as many goals
