Is Curt Schilling a Hall of Famer?
Since the news of Curt Schilling's likely career-ending injury, many have speculated as to whether he has the credentials to make it to Cooperstown. Since he is one of the top pitchers in our team's history, it would make sense for us to make some discussion about it here. Schilling is the definition of a borderline candidate. A couple dominant years, a couple so-so years. Great post-season succe

The World Series Champions Boston Red Sox have signed veteran pitcher Curt Schilling for a one year contract for the 2008 campaign. Schilling signed a one year pact with Boston reported to be for $8 million, but could possibly be worth as much as another $5 million in incentives and bonuses. There was much speculation that Schilling pitched his final game for Boston during the Red Sox victorious sweep of the Colorado Rockies in the Series. Boston is now in talks with free agent third baseman Mike Lowell who was the MVP in the World Series for the Red Sox.© Copyright 2007 thesackattack.com

Mondesi Manages Against Baba Booey & Curt Schilling
A few weeks ago, I briefly mentioned my involvement in an upcoming Sporting News Strat-o-Matic Baseball League recreating the 1986 season. I was honored to be asked as the "Celebrity Manager" of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team that went 64-98 "for real" that year. It's going to be a tall order to turn this squad around, but I thought it would be a lot of fun.Today, I logged in to see who I'd be competing against. Needless to say, I was blown away by the field that The Sporting News has assembled. Managing the '86 Red Sox? None other than Curt Schilling, noted baseball historian, bloody sock wearer, and blogger when not pitching for said Red Sox. But even more exciting than that was the manager of the 1986 Mets. It's Howard Stern's longtime right-hand man and die-hard Mets fan Baba Booey (Gary Dell'Abate). Dell'Abate takes the Mets so seriously that he was popping Tums to ease his sick stomach during the Mets' collapse last month.Inspiration for many a prank phone calls, it's Ba

And with a sales pitch like this, who can resist...The new STAR TREK Urn will feature a bold design reminiscent of the 24th century styling of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet. The STAR TREK Casket styling has been inspired by the popular “Photon Torpedo” design seen in STAR TREK II: The Wrath of Kahn. Now they have to choose between being buried in a MLB team-licensed urn or the bad boys you see above. Curt Schilling Has No Idea That People Dislike Him
That's the only explanation I have for why he refuses to shut his freakin' mouth. From the AP:Curt Schilling says that Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire's refusals to address accusations of steroids use are tantamount to admissions. "If someone wrote that stuff about me and I didn't sue their (butt) off, am I not admitting that there's some legitimacy to it?" he said on HBO's "Costas Now."Agreed, but Schill wasn't through strafing people."Jose Canseco admitted he cheated his entire career," Schilling said. "Everything he ever did should be wiped clean. I think his MVP should go back and should go to the runner-up."As for Palmeiro, Schilling said: "The year he tested positive, nothing he did that year should count, which I think would take away 3,000 hits for him."Interesting idea. Not going to happen, but interesting. Hang with me ... Schill's not through."It goes to the Mark McGwire thing in Congress. I mean, I'm a huge Mark McGwire fan. But I just always thought it was very simple

Schilling...so close in bid for no-no
Don't shake off your catcher...especially Varitek. The Red Sox 40 year-old starting pitcher Curt Schilling came within one out of his first career no-hitter Thursday, losing his bid when Shannon Stewart lined a clean single to right field in Boston's 1-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Schilling retired Mark Kotsay and Jason Kendall on grounders to shortstop for the first two outs of the ninth. Then Stewart stepped up and lined the first pitch through the hole between first and second for Oakland's only hit. Schilling said he shook off catcher Jason Varitek on that pitch, going with a fastball instead of a slider. "We get two outs, and I was sure, and I had a plan, and I shook Tek off," Schilling said. "And I get a big what if for the rest of my life." It's not the first time a Boston pitcher shook off Varitek in the ninth inning only to see a no-hitter get broken up. Pedro Martinez did it in 2000 against Tampa Bay, giving up a single to John Flaherty on a fastball instead of t

Boston Red Sox Starter Curt Schilling was one out away, from being the third oldest pitcher in MLB history to throw a no-hitter. But with two out in the ninth Oakland A's left fielder Shannon Stewart hit a single to right to spoil the bid. Schilling then retired Mark Ellis as he defeated the Oakland A's 1-0 Thursday afternoon. It was Schilling's third career one hitter. The victory puts Schilling's record at 6-2 for the year. Nolan Ryan threw no-hitters at ages 43 and 44, and Cy Young threw a No-No at age 41. Curt Schilling: Loudmouthed Self-Promoter, or PR Genius?
I have been a Sox fan forever having grown up in Maine. Right now I’m loving the punishment Boston has been doling out to opponents, especially the Yanks. While I was not paying attention, Curt Schilling the Red Sox ace (and resident loudmouth) has gone off and created his own blog (WordPress) called 38 Pitches. In addition, Shilling has started a video game company called Green Monster Games. While many athletes have personal home pages and some celebrities have blogs, these traditionally tend to be censored by PR agents and used more as marketing ploys than anything else. Schilling on the other hand has always been very outspoken (not always positively) and his antics include frequently calling into Boston Radio Stations. Unlike most other athlete or celeb blogs I have seen, Schilling truly uses his as a platform to communicate with fans. And the fans respond – many entries have as many as 300 comments. From a PR perspective, the blog seems a mixed bag. On the one hand Schilling

Schilling Has The Right to Be Upset
Can't say I blame Curt Schilling one bit for his ranting at the collected media after Orioles broadcaster Gary Thorne made the ludicrous statements that he did Wednesday night, during the broadcast between Baltimore and Boston. In case you have been in another dimension over the last couple of days here is the story.Thorne, on Wednesday night told his audience that Curt Schilling's bloody sock that got so much attention during the 2004 ALCS, was actually a public relations move, to make Schilling seem more heroic. Thorne claimed that he was told this by Red Sox backup catcher Doug Mirabelli. Now on Thursday, Thorne takes to the airwaves, and says it was all just a misunderstanding. He says he did not realize that Mirabelli was being sarcastic, when he "allegedly" made the comments. But the damage had all ready been done, Thorne had needlessly sullied two players reputations. Schilling on his website released a blog entry, here in part is what he said " If you haven't figured it out b

Schilling Takes Back Comments Concerning Bonds
As stated here before, everyone is now weighing in on the whole Barry Bonds issue. First we had David Ortiz saying leave the poor guy alone, and then we had his teammate, Curt Schilling, making some comments quite the opposite about how he thinks the situation that the league commish and others will not attend when the record is broken speaks for itself. Well, now just as fast as people are making their feelings known about the subject, Schilling is just as quickly taking his comments back. For some reason, Curt threw out a public apology to Bonds on his blog - 38pitches.com. "Everyone has days and events in life they'd love to push the rewind button on, yesterday was one of those days," Schilling stated on the site. "Regardless of my opinions, thoughts and beliefs on anything Barry Bonds it was absolutely irresponsible and wrong to say what I did. I don't think it's within anyone's right to say the things I said yesterday and affect other peoples lives in that way. As someone w

Gary Throne, A Bloody Mess: The Bloody Sock Revisited, Curt Schilling & MASN's Gary Throne...
Well, most baseball fans know of the 'bloody sock' game that Curt Schilling pitched in the '04 ALCS (game 6) to tie the series for the Boston Red Sox.Now, someone is questioning the validity of that game. However, it's none other than MASN's own Gary Thorne. From boston.com:Thorne said on the air, while the Orioles were batting in the fifth, that he'd been told by Sox catcher Doug Mirabelli that was not blood, but paint, on the sock Schilling wore during Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the Yankees. It was done for the public relations effect, Thorne said."The great story we were talking about the other night was that famous red stocking that he wore when they finally won, the blood on his stocking," Thorne said to broadcast partner Jim Palmer, the Hall of Fame pitcher, in a conversation that had begun with a discussion of Schilling's blog."Nah," Thorne said. It's pretty cool to have such a high-profile baseball player writing his own blog. 38 Pitches is from the man with the bloody sock, Boston Red Sox ace pitcher, Curt Schilling. He goes into great detail in his descriptions of the previous night's game. It's nice to think of him typing away on the red-eye flight home. I'm not sure about all the references to US troops in the Middle East. I guess it's a cultural difference. It's interesting to see how an elite sportsman thinks about the game.

Schilling Pitches In Minor League Game
Red Sox RHP Curt Schilling threw 98 pitches over six solid innings in a game featuring mostly Triple-A players at Boston's minor league complex on Sunday. Schilling mixed all his pitches and hopes his next start will prove to manager Terry Francona that he's prepared to go deep into the game during Boston's season opener at Kansas City on April 2. "I don't want to be on a pitch count," he said. "I know I'm 40, but I don't think the ace of the staff should be on a pitch count." Schilling gave up one run - a homer by highly touted Reds prospect Jay Bruce - and four hits. The right-hander struck out six and didn't walk a batter in front of general manager Theo Epstein and about 100 others, many of them young Red Sox prospects. Schilling, who pitched to regular catcher Jason Varitek, said he expects to reach 100 pitches in his next start. "I felt strong," Schilling said. "The only thing that was wrong was my fastball command. I thought I had a lot of life at the end." Schilling is

      Schilling to Pitch in 2008
There’s a reason why I read other sports blogs because you usually can pick up something from a blog that you, the reader, may not read. As I first saw on The Red Sox Times, Curt Schilling announced on the morning show of Dennis & Callahan on WEEI in Boston that in fact he will not be retiring at the end of the 2007 season. He has already been in discussions with the Red Sox front office and said during the interview that he will be sitting down with the Sox front office to discuss an extension. He also stated that he wants to stay and pitch in Boston during the 2008 season. I guess this means he won’t be running against Senator Kerry in 2008 for the Massachusetts U.S. Senate seat that Kerry currently holds. He also stated that if the Red Sox weren’t to sign him for 2008, he would be open to pitching anywhere except for the Yankees. Note to Theo: Sign Curt for 2008. His presence will not only help you guys as a team but it will beneficial to have him around the y

BoSox SP Schilling May Challenge Kerry in "08
Recently, Senator John Kerry (D-Massachusetts) ruled out a run for the presidency in 2008 and, instead, opted to run for re-election. Cue Boston Red Sox starting pitcher, Curt Schilling. Curt Schilling seemed surprised yesterday by the sudden groundswell of local supporters hoping to draft him into national politics and a 2008 Senate run against John Kerry. The Red Sox [team stats] pitching hero didn't flatly rule out the idea, either, though he didn't sound like he was about to hit the campaign trail anytime soon. Schilling has long supported President Bush. Days before the 2004 presidential election, in which Kerry was running as the Democratic candidate, Schilling was on ABC’s Good Morning America and endorsed Bush for re-election. The Sox ace endorsed the president’s reelection on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” was quickly contacted by Bush himself, and is scheduled to make a battleground-state appearance with the candidate this morning in Mancheste

      Schilling's Thoughts On Joel Piñeiro
Courtesy of the Sons of Sam Horn Message Board, Curt Schilling, who goes by the handle of Gehrig38 there, gives his thoughts on the signing of Joel Piñeiro: The only thing I know is that two years ago I thought this guy had as lively stuff as anyone I had seen in a long time. He certainly did seem to tail off last year but during some of his games he showed the mid 90s electric stuff he had all the time a few years back. I thought, from the first day I saw him, that he was built to be a reliever with an incredible arm on a Gordon sized body. He’ll gain a decent amount of velocity heading to the pen, if he can make the mental transition this guys a serious power arm on the back end. His curveball, when he’s fresh, is a strikeout pitch, his fastball certainly is as well, but it was his changeup that wow’d everyone. Tremendous arm action, ball died without looking like it was slowing down. This, to me anyway, is a no lose signing. This kid gets in the right mix and envi

However, Curt has said that if they don't get a deal done now then he does not want it done after the season and the Sox respect that.Curt is already 40 and if Daisuke Matsuzaka turns out to be phenom then the Sox can afford to lose Curt, if not they are in trouble.http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070222&content_id=1811450&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
