But due to its rich pre-Christian traditions, many of the old customs have been incorporated into Catholic rites. Sometimes the lines get blurred, as in the case of Maximon, a mixture of Judas Iscariot and St. Simon, who always seems to be smoking a cigar. His popularity stems from his human weaknesses (and in colonial times, because the church didn't like Judas, the Mayans adopted him as a form of protest for being forced to renounce their old beliefs) - he's the patron of prostitutes, mob bosses and other characters living on the fringes of society. It was fun, and also an interesting look at savvy marketing toward the young and scene-y. Read on....I had no idea what neat clothes Mesh & Lace carried; the sign is kind of froufy -looking, so I'd never gone inside, even though it's like two minutes

Savvy Travel: The Faces of Guatemala
She's back! The Budget Babe's International Travel Advisor Fifi LaMode returns from hiatus with colorful and inspiring insights gained during a recent trip to beautiful Guatemala. —TBB by Fifi LaMode When first deciding to visit Guatemala, I only knew of the Mayan ruins at Tikal, which was my primary reason for going. After booking the trip I was filled with apprehension amid the personal safety warnings (crime in the street, purse snatchings, muggings, etc.) What I was not prepared for was a country of warm, friendly, hospitable people, ideal weather, natural beauty, and loads of history. This is one of the best-kept tourist secrets ever! There should be throngs of visitors everywhere, rather than just a smattering here and there. From the moment you go through immigration

Wall Street Journal: Making Kids Money Savvy - Try These Four Financial Tricks
Here's an interesting article at the Wall Street Journal talking about some ways to help make your kids more "money savvy". Tips include:Give them a smaller allowance now, or a bigger one if they wait, teaching them to save and practice delayed gratificationTeach them about spending slower. People tend to spend money faster if they have smaller bills (5 $10 bills as opposed to a $50 bill). Teach them by switching weeks with same allowance, different denominations.Help them make a wish list instead of buying things for them right away. This way you can review the wish list in a few days, and often they'll realize that they don't need or want the item anymore.Teaching them the value of money by giving them some ownership of them money. Make them feel like they're spending their own money,

Sellers: Is Your Agent "Tech Savvy"?
Sellers: Is Your Agent "Tech Savvy"?Since many recent surveys have shown that between 78% and 85% of buyers come from the Internet and are already well-versed in technology, it only makes sense that you choose an agent who knows how to reach these potential buyers. In other words, if your agent doesn't even know what a "blog" is, maybe you should rethink your strategy of hiring the agent your father used to use. If an agent relies strictly on newspaper ads for new business, she/he may be headed the way of the dinosaur in the next few years. The real estate business is dynamic - constantly evolving. Technology is not only a tool in our industry, it is the driving force of the industry. A year in the life of a real estate agent is similar to a year in the life of a dog - as we tend to gray and age at a rate of at least 7 to 10 times as fast as others with "normal jobs". On a daily basis we see changes in market, population, banking, legal, insurance. Deeply entrenched in these changes a

The NZS.com community are savvy Internet users…
Recently NZS.com enlisted the help of Nielsen//NetRatings to survey our fellow NZS.com community members and we’ve found (what we thought already) that we’re all a savvy bunch of Internet users! There were a few interesting statistics that came out of the survey. One of these statistics that caught my interest was the metric that a higher than market percentage of the NZS.com community have visited an online auction site (15% higher than the market average) and even further, the number of us who have actively participated in an online auction is a full 18% higher than the market average. Our deduction (backed up by these stats of course) is that the NZS.com community are a particularly savvy bunch of Internet users. I’m sure you’ll agree. Share This ...
