Until Friday, the kingdom had balked at saying whether it would attend and at what level, seeking assurances Israel would negotiate the most difficult issues of the Arab-Israeli conflict in negotiations governed by

An explosion set a gas pipeline ablaze and killed 28 workers in eastern Saudi Arabia, the Saudi national oil company Aramco said on Sunday. "The fire broke out while contractor workers where linking a new pipe" to the pipeline during maintenance late on Saturday, Aramco said in a statement. It said 28 workers, including five Aramco employees, had died in the fire, which was put out early on Sunday some 30 kilometres from its Hawiyah gas plant. The company did not specify how many people had been injured in the blaze, or give the victims' nationalities."The company is taking all necessary measures to guarantee the continuation of the normal gas output," it said. Saudi Arabia's national oil company, Saudi Aramco is the world's largest oil producer, located on the country's east coast. Saudi Arabia's decision to exclude the falling dollar from discussions at this weekend's OPEC summit was supported by others within the producer group, Angola's Finance Minister Jose Pedro de Morais said. Saudi Arabia, the world's largest crude oil exporter and an ally of the U.S., yesterday rejected a proposal by Iran and Venezuela to debate pricing oil in currencies other than the dollar, a day before the OPEC heads of state summit in Riyadh. ``This is not the case of Saudi Arabia against the rest at all,'' de Morais said in an interview today. ``Since the OPEC economy is profoundly linked to the dollar, any rash move could do more harm than good.'' Leaders of the 12-member Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries landed today in Riyadh, where Saudi police blocked off streets and helicopters patrolled the skies. The group will commit to ensuring stable oil supply and seek ways of reducing carbon emissions fro
Saudi Arabia, the world's largest crude oil exporter, rejected a proposal by Iran and Venezuela to discuss the weak dollar at this weekend's OPEC summit in Riyadh, saying it didn't want the U.S. currency to ``collapse.'' Saudi Arabia won't discuss pricing oil in currencies other than the dollar, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal said, speaking at a meeting of oil and finance ministers today that was accidentally broadcast to journalists. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which pumps more than 40 percent of the world's oil, has seen its revenue diminish because of the decline in the dollar over the past three years. OPEC holds a heads of state summit in Riyadh tomorrow. ``As for the monetary aspect and the dollar I would like to ask his Excellency, the minister of Iran, to leave this question to the appropriate party, the ministers of finance, without mentioning that we gave them this task
OPEC oil nations plan to ignore U.S. calls to increase production as crude prices remain stuck above $90 a barrel, according to a draft of the group's statement to be released this weekend. The group will instead reiterate a commitment to ensure energy supply and seek to reduce their carbon emissions released from pumping and refining oil and gas, according to the statement to be issued in Riyadh, which was seen by Bloomberg and confirmed by three officials from the group who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Their intention to keep production at current levels signals consumers are unlikely to see relief from high oil prices, which reached a record $98.62 a barrel on Nov. 7 in New York. A pledge to reduce carbon dioxide threatens to force investors in OPEC nations such as Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Exxon Mobil Corp. to incur extra costs at their operations. ``I don't think we can expect any move from OPEC to reduce pri

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is set to attend the third summit of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 17. "The Iranian president will confer with heads of state and officials of the OPEC member states on regional and international developments," the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, quoted Iran's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Mohammad Hosseini as saying. Hosseini also said that during the meeting in Riyadh, OPEC members would discuss oil supplies, the protection of the environment and the promotion of mutual cooperation. The diplomat added that prior to the summit, foreign, finance and oil ministers from 12 OPEC member states would hold meetings to coordinate and finalize an OPEC summit statement. Hosseini stressed the significance of the upcoming meeting, making reference to unprecedented increase in oil prices over recent weeks, currently around 40% higher than at the start of the year. OPEC, producer of more than 40 percent of the world's oil, will hold off discussing an output increase in Riyadh this week because current oil prices have ``no connection'' to supply and demand, Saudi Arabia's oil minister said. Global ``inventories, up to date, are comfortable,'' Ali al- Naimi said in Riyadh today ahead of an Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries summit this weekend. ``There are a multitude of factors influencing the price, which we have the least influence on,'' the minister said. Oil prices fell for a second day after the International Energy Agency cut its 2008 world demand forecast, citing the effect of record prices on consumption in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Crude for December delivery fell 95 cents to $93.67 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 2:48 p.m. London time. Oil rose more than 50 percent this year, reaching a record $98.62 last week. OPEC has little influence on
Yesterday's Saudi Arabia beheading update was so much fun that I decided to do another one. So here it is: Two more people, this time Pakistanis, had their unworthy heads lopped off on Thursday, one for drug smuggling and the other for murder:
In two separate statements carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, the ministry said Jamil Muhammad Jamil robbed and strangled a Pakistani couple — while Bakhtiar Sirfiraz Khan was caught smuggling heroin into the kingdom.
The statements said both Jamil and Khan were executed in the western seaport city of Jiddah.
...
Thursday's executions brought to 113 the number of people beheaded in the kingdom this year, according to an Associated Press count.
According to another count, they passed 120 in August... Can't someone just ask these goons how many people they have killed this year? Surely, some bureaucratic beard somewhere must keep records, or do they just send all these heads flying for the hell of it...?

The surge in oil prices to record highs will shield OPEC nations, some of which peg their currencies to the US dollar, from current dollar weakness, a Saudi newspaper quoted OPEC sources as saying on Saturday.OPEC members have no immediate plans to hold consultations on a rise in oil prices to record peaks above $82 a barrel last week, al-Riyadh newspaper reported, quoting unnamed OPEC sources it said were well-informed.An OPEC source told Reuters on Tuesday ministers would hold consultations if oil prices stayed over $80 a barrel for 15 to 20 days."The decline in the dollar's exchange rate had an impact on OPEC member states' revenue ... But the rise in crude prices can help overcome this decline in revenues and ensure continuity of energy investments planned by these states over the next five years," an OPEC source said, according to al-Riyadh.The U.S. Federal Reserve's decision to cut its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points last week helped drive the euro to a record high
After landing in Pakistan, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif spent only few hours in his home country before the authorities ordered him to leave. Sharif was deposed in a military coup in1999, and was living in UK since. The Pakistani Supreme Court recently affirmed his right to return, but that decision was obviously ignored. A family in the Evil Kingdom attacked and killed some of their slaves earlier in the week, because the slaves were suspected of practicing "magic" on a child who had gotten ill. Seven members of the family - and one of the slaves, who had survived - were then arrested by police:
Four maids were attacked this month by seven members of a Saudi household in Aflaj, a desert village south of Riyadh, and two of them died. Saudi papers have said seven Saudis were detained over the incident.
One of the survivors, Tari Tarsim, 27, was taken into custody by police on Monday, an Indonesian diplomat told Reuters.
"The family suspected them of practising magic -- "sihr" -- on one of their children who got ill. They suspected one of the four ladies was doing magic," the diplomat said.
"We have information that on Monday one of the surviving maids was transferred to police custody. We don't know why she was transferred."

They had to wait until he reached "legal age" before they chopped his head off. This was execution number 109 (maybe) in the Evil Kingdom:
Saudi authorities beheaded a Saudi national convicted of fatally shooting his stepmother while he was still a minor, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.
The execution took place in the Muslim holy city of Mecca.
Abdullah Bin Mohammed al-Otaibi shot his stepmother, Wadha Bint Dhwehi Bint Shafi, following a dispute, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.
They still have some catching up to do if they're going to beat Iran, where the mullahs have already murdered around 150 people this year.

Faced with resistance from the conservative official ulema, Saudi King Abdullah has adopted a strategy of “circumvention” to coerce … reforms – officially toeing the Wahhabi line, but quietly giving more leeway to the private sector.
Interesting times in Saudi Arabia where The Christian Science Monitor, in an article entitled A tipping point in Saudi Arabia, tells us that “almost 75 percent of Saudi citizens are under age 30 and youth unemployment is approaching 30 percent – a potential breeding ground for terrorists and regime dissidents.
Current high oil prices are not enough to paper over the economic ravages of the past two decades. “The oil boom is over and will not return,” Abdullah told his subjects. “All of us must get used to a different lifestyle.”

Saudi Arabia First Music Video - ‘Malak Ghair Allah’ or ‘You Only Have God to Count On’
The first clip to be fully produced in Saudi Arabia has a message of a different kind: You can be cool and devout.
The Arab world’s hugely popular music video industry often features sexy performers in revealing clothes crooning about love.
but the video is unusual because it was made in a country where the religious establishment considers music un-Islamic and bans it in public places. And the main cast includes a Saudi woman, something rare in a work produced inside the kingdom.
This video was directed by the managing director of FullStop Advertising Mr. Kaswara S. Al-Khatib. It was filmed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The video is a one of a kind story about a young man who repents after a life-changing accident which brings him back to Allah. The video features an all-Saudi Cast and production team. Saudi Arabia on Saturday beheaded a Pakistani national convicted of drug trafficking, the interior ministry said.
The man was executed in the eastern city of Dammam for smuggling heroin into the kingdom, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.
The execution takes to 118 the number of people beheaded in Saudi Arabia so far this year, passing the total of 113 for the whole of 2000, which was the highest in recent years.
This followed on an earlier beheading spree during which six people were put to death:
Saudi Arabia said on Friday it had beheaded five Pakistanis and one Nigerian for drug smuggling and armed robbery. The interior ministry said two Pakistanis were executed after they were convicted of drug trafficking and the three others after they were found guilty of forming a gang which carried out armed robberies.
The Nigerian was put to death for smuggling cocaine.

Why did the American government make a weapon selling deal worth $20 billion with Saudi Arabia? Saying that Saudi Arabia's efforts to fight Islamic terrorism are unconvincing is an understatement.Yesterday at the Egyptian sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Robert Gates and Condoleezza Rice, respectively the US secretaries of defence and state, had a meeting with Israeli and Arabic representatives. Rice announced that the American government will conclude a military selling deal worth about $63 billion with Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and 5 other allied Arabic countries from the Persian Gulf.Secondly, this military deal is also aimed to counter the "negative influence" of Al-Qaeda, the Hezbollah, Iran and Syria. According to the deal, some money will be granted to some countries - that are deemed to be the USA's allies in the war on terrorism - so that their aviation, naval fleet and national army can be reinforced. A "gang of magicians" has been operating in Saudi Arabia. Two members had been arrested previously by the Bearded Police, and now a third member has been nabbed as well:
The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Madinah recently arrested an African national, who was practicing black magic at a house in a village outside Madinah. Police and commission members had been on the lookout for the man — the third member of a gang of magicians — since last year.
“His arrest comes following complaints about a man practicing black magic at a village outside Madinah. The magician worked at a trinket shop and claimed he was an expert in spells that would make people love each other. He would charge SR1,000 for his services,” said a commission member.
On receiving the report, an undercover commission member sought the help of the man saying he wanted a woman to love him.
“He told the suspect that she wanted a huge dowry. The suspect told
Usually, any team making the final round of any tournament or playoff is a good thing. But I'm not sure about this...After Iraq defeated South Korea to advance to the Asian Cup Finals, an estimate of 50 people were killed and hundreds wounded by detonated car bombs during postgame celebrations.Gunfire also erupted, possibly killing 3 and injuring 17.The game between Iraq and Saudi Arabia will progress as planned Sunday. Hopefully, despite who wins or loses, peaceful postgame celebrations can commence. For the news article, click here.

An injury-time header from substitute Saad Al Harthi earned Saudi Arabia a priceless Asian Cup win to break Indonesian hearts here yesterday. The co-hosts had held out in a one-sided second half after first half goals from Yasser Al Qahtani and Elie Aiboy had seen the teams level 1-1 at the break. But Saudi Arabia's 2-1 victory sees them leap above Indonesia to the top of Group D with four points from two games. After nine minutes, Al Qahtani beat four players before setting up Malek Maaz but he blazed well over from six yards. Two minutes later, Indonesia missed an even better chance. Budi Sudarsono's 30-yard free-kick was pushed out by Yasser Al Mosailem in the Saudi goal and the ball dropped straight to Elie at but his first-time finish with the goal gaping was appalling.Saudi Arabia punished him in the next minute as Al Qahtani nipped in front of his marker to plant a firm header into the bottom corner. The action was unrelenting and on 20 minutes Indonesia were level.Syamsul Bachri w

This is getting tiresome, but here's another execution by beheading in the Evil Kingdom:
A Saudi man convicted of murder was beheaded on Thursday, bringing the total number of executions announced by the ultra-conservative kingdom this year to 102.
Al-Hamidi bin Ghafi bin Dhawi Al-Ghamdi was executed in the south-western town of Khamis Mashit after he was convicted of shooting a man to death following an argument, the official SPA news agency reported.
We're getting closer and closer to the previous annual record of 113, and half the head-lopping season still remains, so I'm sure we'll soon have a new record. Maybe they'll celebrate that with some additional beheadings, just for the hell of it.

In a stunning slap in the face of American Foriegn Policy, the House of Representatives voted to give no financial aid to Saudi Arabia..not that the oil rich nation needs it.The House vote closes a loophole that has allowed the Bush Administration to send $2.5 million dollars to the kingdom, home to 19 of the 9/11 hijackers and the only country in the world to conduct public beheadings. The Bush administration opposed the bill claiming Saudi Arabia needs the money because it is an ally in the war on terror. The amendement was championed by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-New York), who is also my congressman.
Congress has taken an important step in dealing with the zygote of Islamofascism (Hat tip: Michelle Malkin):The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Friday to prohibit any aid to Saudi Arabia as lawmakers accused the close ally of religious intolerance and bankrolling terrorist organizations. The prohibition, reflecting persistent tensions with the kingdom after the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001, was attached to a foreign aid funding bill for next year that has not yet been debated by the Senate. It also faces a veto threat from the White House because of an unrelated provision.A spokesman for the Saudi embassy in Washington declined to comment on the legislation. In the past three years, Congress has passed bills to stop the relatively small amount of U.S. aid to Saudi Arabia, only to see the Bush administration circumvent the prohibitions. Now, lawmakers are trying to close loopholes so that no more U.S. aid can be sent to the world’s leading petroleum exporter.
Megan K. Stack - The hem of my heavy Islamic cloak trailed over floors that glistened like ice. I walked faster, my eyes fixed on a familiar, green icon. I hadn't seen a Starbucks in months, but there it was, tucked into a corner of a fancy shopping mall in the Saudi capital. After all those bitter little cups of sludgy Arabic coffee, here at last was an improbable snippet of home — caffeinated, comforting, American.I wandered into the shop, filling my lungs with the rich wafts of coffee. The man behind the counter gave me a bemused look; his eyes flickered. More...

Osama bin Laden directly ordered the failed attack against an oil platform in Saudi Arabia in February 2006, Saudi authorities announced on Tuesday. The revelation came from a terror suspect arrested by the police accused of having given logistic support to the suicide bomb cell that sought to attack the Abqiq site. Abdullah al-Muqrin said "an operation of this nature could not be carried out without a fatwa (religious edict) from bin Laden himself and to receive it we had to wait for eight months". According to the statements by the terror suspects, the aim of the terror network was to reproduce in the kingdom the same effect that the 11 September attacks had in the United States. In addition, the cell reportedly planned to carry out attakcs in neighbouring Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Last month the Saudi authorities arrested 172 suspected members of seven terrorist cells, some of whom had reportedly been training as pilots to be used in attacks on state oil sites. More
