Best Games You've Never Played: Dragon Force Sega Saturn
Dragon Force was one of the best games for the Sega Saturn. It was released in Japan as a Sega Ages Collection for Playstation 2, but unfortunately we are not that lucky here in the U.S. Dragon Force was translated and released by the now defunct Working Designs (great studio) and released for the Saturn in 1996. Dragon Force's claim to fame were the epic battles with up to 200 troops onscreen with 7 different troop types (soldier, samurai, archer, mage, harpy, dragon, or zombie) but it was a tremendous strategy game with a ton of replay value (8 different Rulers to Choose from). The graphics were great for their time and there will full anime cutscenes that were very stylish. The orchestral music worked well with the theme and the epic battles with some (though little) real time intera

But Smith retired in 1990 and his successors did not see it that way. They took away the independence of Saturn's are dead and the hunger for new models. After losing billions of dollars, Saturn has struggled with old ideas a few years ago when the GM (diagrams) decided to give him another chance. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the full moon passes intoEarth's shadow and is blocked from the sun's rays that normally illuminate it. During an eclipse, the sun, Earth and moon line up, leaving a darkened moon visible to observers onthe night side of the planet. This is the last total lunar eclipse until Dec. 20, 2010. This eclipse occurred on a crystal clear night and was made extra special by appearances by the planet Saturn and Regulus, the brightest star in the constellation Leo.Click here to visit this galleryClick here to visit www.GillisPhotos.com

      A Floating Saturn
My nine year old sleeps with the covers pulled over his head. I just woke him up a little bit ago so he could see the lunar eclipse. In his groggy state he asked me what would happen when Mars collides with the moon in ten years. I gathered that he read this interesting prediction somewhere. Perhaps a science fiction journal of some type. I don’t think we need to worry about that now, says I, ever so gently. His eyes gradually widen as he watches the earth’s shadow creep along the big cheese. “Wow! Mommy that’s cool!” He exclaims. Then he bounds back into bed. Up go the covers, like the earth’s shadow passing over the moon. I snuggle in with him, like a spoon, and his bare shoulder smells so good to me that I press my lips against its sweet softness. cool -- it's GM's Mini: Is it a Saturn? A Saab? Both?GM left drawings of a proposed Mini Cooper-fighter in a design studio room where journalists got a preview of the work being done on the production Chevrolet Volt. The drawings illustrated what appeared to be a BMW Mini copy, a two-box, threedoor hatchback design with a conventional, vertical B-pillar. Both were illustrated in green with a white top, and one drawing showed what looks like a lift-off roof panel between the A- and B-pillars. It had a large, egg-crate grille and Chevy bowties. The other was a profile view of a light-blue car with a white top, its B-pillar raked, like that of a Chevy Nomad wagon. The car, if GM goes forth with the project, will not be a Chevrolet. Captured by the Cassini spacecraft as part of the Cassini-Huygens mission, a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency, the noises have been altered so that we humans can hear them, but the general patterns remain intact. Spooky, ethereal sound waves drift across the speakers like a flock of homeless ghosts in search of a mansion. Saturn Astra To Come Soon
In an effort to revitalize the Saturn brand, General Motors looked in the direction of the continent of Europe. With the help of its Opel brand, General Motors has so far successfully reinvented Saturn. The Outlook and the Aura are just the early offering from Saturn with European influence. Come fall of this year, General Motors will introduce a rebadged Opel Astra as the Saturn Astra in the United States auto market. According to General Motors, in order for the European Astra to be accepted in the United States, it has to be both attractive in appearance and very driver-friendly. The first criterion, of course, is to ensure that the Saturn Astra can attract the younger generation of car buyers. The second attribute is to makes sure that upon test driving the Astra, potential car buyers would have a hard time walking away from the car. The hatchback is designed with European styling cues. 2007 Saturn Sky Red Line
As Chevy’s iconic Corvette has passed through each successive generation, it has transformed into a bona fide supercar, a ride that can step into the ring with the world’s best and leave un-bowed. But that transformation has come at a price–literally. A base Corvette now costs nearly $45,000, a steal in terms of the capability it offers but expensive enough to price it out of the very niche it helped create: the accessible, all-American sports car. And so we welcome a new patron of performance for the everyman, the Saturn Sky Red Line. At just under $29,000, the Red Line is exactly what the Corvette used to be: fairly cheap and plenty fast. The 260-hp, 2.0-liter, turbocharged and intercooled, DOHC Ecotec four sounds pretty damn good and will move the Red Line from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The 6300-rpm redline and closely spaced gear ratios mean that you’re working the standard five-speed manual all the time, but with the Saturn’s solid shift action an

Sounds of Saturn: Cassini Mission Brings Back Audio
Wired has a good story on the Cassini mission, which is flying around Saturn--that's the planet, not the car--and gathering data for NASA.Moogs in outer space! Well, almost. NASA recently published several audio recordings collected during the Cassini-Huygens space probe's exploration of the Saturnian system, and it couldn’t sound more like a theremin-laden soundtrack to a 2001: A Space Odyssey sequel. (And yes we know there’s already a sequel, but we mean a good sequel. Sorry, Roy Scheider. We loved you on SeaQuest DSV.). Saturn is a source of intense radio emissions that are generated along with the auroras of the planet's poles -- similar to Earth's northern and southern lights. The eerie whistling, epic whooshing and warbling echoes collected by the probe's instruments sound as though they could have been lifted directly from '50s sci-fi classics like Plan 9 From Outer Space or Forbidden Planet. Offering 2.1 sound via two satellite speakers supplemented by a central subwoofer unit that serves as the system’s control unit, these are hardly going to immerse you in a sea of sound, but for people looking for a desktop speaker solution who don’t quite have the space for 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound setups 2.1 systems such as this are ideal – and the fact that they look as good as they do is a positive bonus. Is This Islay's New Ferry? Saturn performs berthing trials at Port Askaig
I received a very interesting follow up from Mark Unsworth of Islay Studios on yesterdays story about the new winter timetable from Calmac. I wrote that there was no sign of a second ferry for Islay in the winter schedule but the following contribution from Mark might shed some light in the ferry darkness.....Today the Calmac vessel Saturn normally based on Gourock-Dunoon route (Picture right: The Saturn arriving at Rothesay on the Isle of Bute) has been doing berthing trials at Port Askaig this afternoon. So possibly instead of the Hebridean Isles and the Arran working to Islay over the winter it could be the Hebridean Isles for a passenger service and the Saturn for freight only. Last winter the Arran was used to clear backlogs of freight from time to time, maybe this year the Saturn will be on the route fulltime, it isn't really suited to passenger traffic for this route being a smaller ship and with more limited catering services on board. Both the Saturn and the Jupiter do also c

Free Calls-SMS: Possible origin of Saturn’s mysterious G ring
Free Calls-SMS: Possible origin of Saturn’s mysterious G ringStanislav P. AbadjievWith data from the Cassini spacecraft, an international team of scientists may have identified the source of one of Saturn’s more mysterious rings. The enigmatic G ring is likely produced by relatively large, icy particles that reside within a bright arc on the ring’s inner edge. The particles are confined within the arc by gravitational effects from Saturn’s moon Mimas. Micrometeoroids, tiny meteoroids or particles of dust that pervade space, collide with the icy particles, releasing smaller, dust-sized particles that brighten the arc. Plasma, an extremely variable gas made up of charged particles but electrically neutral, pervades the giant planet’s magnetic field. Six months after the launch of the Saturn Vue Green Line, General Motors will halt production of the vehicle. In what may be the most bizarre product introduction in auto industry history, GM trumpeted the release of the Vue Green Line last fall—as a sign of the company’s commitment to hybrids and the environment—but will phase out production starting in March, and then start back again in September, replacing the 2007 Vue Green Line with the redesigned 2008 version. This start-stop will leave a six-month gap during which dealers will run out of the Saturn Vue Green Line. General Motor’s intention to release a hybrid version of the Saturn Vue dates back to the Detroit Auto Show in 2003. At that time, Tom Stephens, GM’s vice-president of powertrain, said, “GM will introduce a Saturn Vue with an advance hybrid system in the latter half of the 2005 calendar year.” Stephens indicated that “drivers can expect fuel economy gains of up to 50 percent” with the hybrid Vue. Saturn Aura
Saturn has introduced an all-new mid-size sedan called the Aura. The 2007 Saturn Aura is the company's first truly credible entry in the most competitive segment of the automobile market. Compared with Saturn's last mid-size car, the unloved L-Series sedan and wagon that died quiet deaths back in 2004, the Aura is decidedly modern and fresh, with Euro character and aesthetic flair. Interestingly, the Aura has none of the plastic body panels that made Saturn famous in the 1990s.The Aura is based on the same safe, solid architecture as the Saab 9-3, which sells for thousands of dollars more. Compared with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion, the Aura is well equipped with safety and comfort features.Aura comes with a choice of two powerful V6 engines. (And a hybrid model is on its way.) The Aura is competitively priced: The base XE starts at less than $20,495 and comes with a 224-horsepower V6 and four-speed automatic. The more powerful XR features a 252-hp V6 and six-speed

The new Vue, priced from $21,395, is designed to compete with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape.GM's global vehicle chief engineer told Automotive News that the higher pricing is the result of more standard equipement and overall value. The base model of last year's model was equipped with a smaller 4-cyl. engine and manual transmisson. Hexagonal weather pattern on Saturn
Hexagonal weather pattern on SaturnNot only is the universe a stranger place than we imagine I think it will turn out to be much stranger than we can imagine. Check out this weather pattern seen on Saturns north pole. If you go to the NASA site you can see a vid the Cassinni probe took of it at night time using infra red imaging. The bright spots are heat generated by the "weather" activity. And the dark areas are denser portions of the ever present cloud layer blocking infrared emissions. It is just absolutely amazing what we have learned from NASA's robotic probes. The Cassini-Huyghens mission has been a smashing success since day one. I regularly go to the Goldstone Deep Space complex where they downlink all the NASA and JPL space probe communications and even those jaded long timers have been surprised time and again lately. And this is only the beginning. My great regret in life is I know I can't possibly live long enough to see the really exciting things we will e

      Saturn's Bizarre North Polar Hexagon
Bizarre Hexagon On Saturn(full article link)Technology News DailyAn odd, six-sided, honeycomb-shaped feature circling the entire north pole of Saturn has captured the interest of scientists with NASA's Cassini mission.NASA's Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft imaged the feature over two decades ago. The fact that it has appeared in Cassini images indicates that it is a long-lived feature. A second hexagon, significantly darker than the brighter historical feature, is also visible in the Cassini pictures. The spacecraft's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer is the first instrument to capture the entire hexagon feature in one image. The new images taken in thermal-infrared light show the hexagon extends much deeper down into the atmosphere than previously expected, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) below the cloud tops. A system of clouds lies within the hexagon. The clouds appear to be whipping around the hexagon like cars on a racetrack."It's amazing to see such striking differences on op

Bizarre hexagon spotted in Saturn’s clouds
One of the most bizarre weather patterns in the solar system has been photographed at Saturn, where astronomers have spotted a huge, six-sided feature circling the north pole. Rather than the normally sinuous cloud structures seen on all planets that have atmospheres, this thing is a hexagon.  The honeycomb feature has been seen before. NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft imaged it more than two decades ago. Now, having spotted it with the Cassini spacecraft, scientists conclude it is a long-lasting oddity. The hexagon is nearly 15,000 miles (25,000 kilometers) across. Nearly four Earths could fit inside it. The thermal imagery shows that the hexagon extends about 60 miles (100 kilometers) down into the clouds.  The hexagon can’t be seen in Cassini’s visible-light imagery because the area is currently in darkness during Saturn’s 15-year polar night — but the thermal signature shows up clearly in the infrared views, captured during a 12-day period last October

Capricorns are very good at hiding their emotions, so it's often hard to tell when they are truly, deeply in love. If you have a load of cash, you can almost bet on admiration from a Capricorn because the goat is turned on by money. Like I said before, Capricorn has great sexual stamina and the ability to go all night if they want to! FAVE POSITION: Spooning! Goat boys and girls love to take, or be taken from behind. BEST SEX TOY: An office desk to "bond" on, or an erotic video will loosen up the randy goat. CAPRICORN MALE IN BED Imagination isn't a strong suit for Capricorn so don't expect acrobatics in the sack. Sex with him could possibly be as boring as watching paint dry and he tends to be a little bit selfish in that area too. BUT you can definitely count on him to be faithful if he has committed to you. Chicago: 2008 Saturn Astra
In just a few days, Saturn will publicly unveil the 2008 Saturn Astra, the rebadged Opel that will be imported from Europe to replace the bizarre-looking Ion. In other markets, the Astra is available in a variety of body styles ranging from a four-door notchback sedan to a slick, sporty hardtop coupe/convertible. This is the part where we eat crow for predicting that GM would send over the notchback, because instead, they've chosen to send a pair of hatchbacks ( 3- and 5-door) to launch the model here in the States. The cars will target formidable competitors like the Mazda3 and VW Rabbit.Saturn's new trim-level nomenclature is employed, with base XE and topline XR versions for the 5-door. The 3-door will be an XR-only vehicle. All Astras receive a 140-horsepower 1.8L Ecotec four-cylinder underhood, which is mated to a 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic. Saturn Rethinks (Cancels) Side-by-Side-by-Side Comparo Amid Questionable Claims of Victory
CNN Money reports that Saturn's pulled the plug on its "Side-by-Side-by-Side Test Drive." During the promotion, Saturn dealers provided customers with [base model four-cylinder] Accords and Camrys to compare against [well equipped V6] Auras. Saturn marketing manager Matt Armstrong declared the two-month campaign a success, claiming Aura sales increased 24 percent (against a 14 percent drop in midsize cars' sales). In fact, Saturn sold 4,694 Auras in June and 5,827 in July. That's a 19 percent increase. Camry on the other hand, dropped from 46,630 sales in June to 41,514 in July, a 12% decrease. So was Aura responsible for the dent in Camry sales? Uh.... no. Accord sales rose from 28,915 to 37,142 during the same time; a 22 percent increase. In raw numbers, Aura's sales went up 1,133 in July, Camry's decreased 5,116, and Accord's increased by 8,227. No matter how Saturn spins it, the Accord was the big winner during the GM brand's "S

GM Ups its Losses on the Saturn Astra
Can someone please explain this to me? To field a credible small car stateside, GM has decided to import the relatively diminutive Opel Astra from Europe into the U.S. and re-badge it a Saturn. Because of the unfavorable exchange rate between the U.S. and the Eurozone, and the fact that the Astra will be screwed together in a high-cost country (Belgium), GM will make a loss on every Astra sold. So the more Astras they sell, the more money they'll lose. And yet, Just-Auto [sub] reports that GM has decided to increase the number of Astras headed stateside from 30k to 40k per year. Originally, we heard that the Opel Astra was a "placeholder;" if it sold in sufficient quantities, GM would transfer production to the U.S. But building cars in the U.S. isn't any cheaper than assembling them in the land of mayonnaise on your french fries. It can't be a Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) pleasing deal, as the imported Astra wouldn't count towards GM's domestic CA

      Saturn Rethinks “Rethink American”
I recently visited the Saturn website to check on an Astra factoid. I was surprised to discover that the brand has dropped the "American" part of their "Rethink American" advertising strapline. It's now just "Rethink," with various bits added as and when needed (e.g. Rethink Hybrids). The idea of a generic prefix, followed by a campaign-specific suffix, is not new. Mercedes dropped it's "Engineered like no other car in the world" shtick a long while ago, in favor of a revolving series of "FILL IN THE BLANK like no other car in the world" pronouncements. Nissan has been shifting this and that for some time now, from Expectations to, uh, I can't remember. Which is the problem. While a flexible strapline certainly helps the marketing mavens, like any brand extension, a one-size-doesn't-fit-all marketing solution weakens the impact of the original, highly-focused brand promise. In fact, none of these automakers keep their strapline f

Saturn Brand is Confused About its Origins
TTAC commentator (and now unintentional blogger) Lichtronamo dropped us an interesting email, which we reprint for your dining and dancing pleasure: "I was reading a Saturn brand Special Advertising Section in the April 2008 Automobile magazine (starting on page 40 and ending at page 53). On the last page, I caught this little nugget of info re: the Saturn brand: "Saturn was named for the rocket, not the planet". This raises at least two questions: 1. Wasn't Oldsmobile the "rocket" brand when Saturn was first launched (both the real rocket and the car brand, I guess)? 2. If Saturn was named after the rocket and not the planet-- as suggested by the ad-- then why is the Saturn logo a stylized image of the planet? Rethink that! [Note: if you come across a TTAC worthy i

      Saturn To Push E-tailing Envelope
Saturn is planning on launching a new online purchasing scheme which will allow even more of the buying process to happen online. The plan is aimed at moving functions like checking dealer inventories, applying for credit and scheduling a test drive to a unified Saturn online platform. Down the road, the website could also be used to handle the evaluation of customers' trade-in vehicles and to negotiate price using online chat and e-mail. Although this last goal is particularly strange given Saturn's "No Haggle" pricing, nothing about this initiative makes much sense, given that the point of huge investments in Saturn's standalone dealership network was not to keep people at their computers. Of course, this program is not being pitched as "the end of the Sa
