Michael Gray played the character of Billy Batson on Shazam! - which was on Channel 15 (CBS), at 10:30 a.m. every Saturday morning. Although I actively support many Democrats, I'm really a third party candidate kind of guy. In 2000 (my first participation in American democracy), I voted for Ralph Nader. In 2004, assured that Kerry would carry my home state of Illinois, I voted for Green Party candidate David Cobb. My justification for doing so is simple; in addition to the inherent attraction of the underdog, I believe neither the Democrats nor Republicans will bring about the magnitude of change America really needs. But, here in 2008, covering the Colorado senate race for The Seminal, I've selectively focused on Democratic candidate Mark Udall and Republican candidate Bob Schaffer. I've done so at the expense of the third party candidates Buddy Moore (independent) and Bob Kinsey (Green Party). As you can gather from

Mackinac Island Lilac Festival Theme honors Saturday Morning Classic Cartoons
Mackinac Island, Michigan- Classic Saturday Morning Cartoons have been chosen as the theme for the 2008 Lilac Festival. The Saturday Morning Cartoon is the term for all American animated television programming scheduled on Saturday mornings from the 1960s to the 1990s and is often referred to by its critics as "illustrated radio" because of its focus on voice, music and sound effects. By the late 1970's, the networks were encouraged to create educational spots that endeavored to use animation for enriching content. Far and away the most successful effort was the Schoolhouse Rock series on ABC, which became a television classic.Mackinac Island shopkeepers create gorgeous window displays in order to compete for the coveted first, second, third and most creative plaques while businesses dress

It's a new day, and I'm over the Mitchell Report already. What's in store for Wrigley? Retractable roof? Beer fountains? Centerfield scoreboard seats? From the Trib: Changes may be coming to Wrigley Field, with talk of more advertising signage, a new section of premium seats down the left-field line and a new owner who would add skyboxes and sell the naming rights. Some of the proposed changes may occur in 2008, some in '09, and some may not happen at all. But whenever there's a discussion regarding renovations at the corner of Clark and Addison, the debate begins anew over how much change Wrigley Field can withstand and still remain Wrigley. Here's what's known about the possible moves: First up, ads: The Cubs have confirmed there will be more ads at Wrigley next year. They took a huge step in '07 by selling the green doors in the outfield to Under Armour. Where the ads will be placed and how many will be added has not been announced. Those Bedouin tribesmen sure have got me confused this week.Members of Saudi Arabia's Senior Clerics Association have issued a fatwa banning camel beauty contests. The fatwa stated that the contests are prohibited because they include perversion, waste money on futility and ostentation, and are similar to games banned by the Koran. Camel beauty contests have been held annually at this time for the past decade, and are part of Saudi tribal folklore. I have absolutely no idea how you can find anything about a camel that can be described as "beautiful" but then again I don't spend all day out in the sun getting heatstroke either!Personally, if it was up to me, they would be having a "camel-toe" beauty contest!Allan W Janssen is the author of The Plain Truth About God at www.God-101.com and the blog "Perspective" at http://God-101.blogspot.com

From the Trib: The reconstruction of the playing field at Wrigley Field comes to an end on Saturday after only three weeks and three days. Now if general manager Jim Hendry can find a dependable right-fielder that quickly, the Cubs will be in pretty good shape. Near perfect weather in November and a rock solid game plan by White Sox groundskeeper Roger Bossard helped the massive project come in well ahead of schedule. "As I mentioned when we started this humongous job, there certainly were a lot of concerns and worries, and Mother Nature was one of them," Bossard said. "It's just been tremendous. Saturday Morning Catch-Up
Good morning! It's time to play Catch-up on a Saturday morning. Most of yesterday I was busy with some other projects and taking care of my dad whose back is in a lot of pain right now. So get some coffee and let's get going. On Thursday night Mike Huckabee and john McCain participated in a town hall meeting hosted by AARP. It was to be a debate but all the other GOP candidates chickened out. You can read the blog post about the event which includes links to coverage about the event. Could we be looking at a Huckabee/McCain ticket? Sure sounds good to me. There are some great campaign videos being put out on YouTube lately. Here are just a few to watch: It's About Time & Some Things Are Not NegotiableWell it is inevitable. Mike Huckabee is really rising fast so the attacks are escalating against him. The Huckabee camp is not taking it sitting down. They are fighting back! Are you looking for something to watch before football tomorrow? Look no further. Mike Huckabee

If you think I'm not going to destroy your field, you're sorely mistaken. Q & A with Big Roger Brossard It's more on the field renovations. From the Daily Herald: The numbers are staggering. A drainage system featuring 6,800 linear feet of piping, 7,500 tons of dirt removed by an armada of trucks in constant motion, a retention area that can hold 60,000 gallons of water and an overall budget of about $1.5 million. The job? Tear up and redo the innards at Wrigley Field and, by the way, get it done in about half the time it would normally take before Mother Nature says enough's enough. Quite a task for most, but when the man in charge is the Sodfather, White Sox head groundskeeper Roger Bossard, the results are sure to be spectacular. Need proof? Look no further than the World Series to see Bossard's handiwork. Boston's Fenway Park has never looked better. After successfully building major-league fields from Seattle to Detroit -- nine in all -- Bossard has just begun work on No.

      Saturday Morning Confusion - Taxes
For anyone confused by taxes on this Saturday morning a brief explanation sent along by my Friend Wayne should clear things up.Enjoy this. It's the best explanation I have read on taxes and tax cuts.It was written by a Professor of Economics, University of Georgia ****************************************************Sometimes politicians, journalists and others exclaim;"It's just a tax cut for the rich!" and it is just accepted to be fact. But what does that Really mean? In case you are not completely clear on this issue, I hope the following helps. Please read it carefully. Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand. Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1.The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7.The eighth would pay $12.The ninth would pay $18.The tenth man (th

Saturday Morning Super Happy Fun Time Headlines/Open Thread
Super Happy Fun Time Headlines today! Woo! A new article from one of the big three Too bad it's all about radio ratings. Sorry to get your hopes up. From the Daily Herald: They say a high tide floats all boats, but I believe the Cubs' run to the playoffs actually washed away listeners at the all-sports stations over the summer. The Cubs generated all sorts of interest, and they lifted WGN 720-AM to an easy victory in the quarterly Arbitron book with a 6.6 percent share of all listeners 12 and older. So how come, even as they were talking about the Cubs, WSCR 670-AM dipped from a 1.9 share in the spring to a 1.6, while WMVP 1000-AM remained level at 1.3? The answer was obvious, and I knew it as soon as I actually stopped to think about how Mike Murphy's ratings at the Score had dropped this spring while the Cubs were just beginning their resurgence. How could that be? As good as Murphy is doing Cubs talk -- and it's his area of expertise as the Score's midday-afternoon host -- t

      Saturday morning fights! Giraffes
It’s giraffes! Fighting! I mean, it’s gotta be a wierd set of evolutionary steps that makes animals fight each other by using their heads as big flails. You know? But damn, that looks like it hurts - especially when that one who seems a little more martially savvy keeps hitting the other one in the legs. Still, I’m pretty sure no Shaolin monks ever watched that and were inspired to create no Giraffe Style Kung Fu. Although perhaps that style would be quite unbeatable. As fights go, this one was pretty leisurely, you gotta admit.

Saturday Morning Update: USA Wins; Springboks Survive
The U.S. Women's Soccer Team advanced to the semi-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup earlier this morning with a 3 goal effort in the second half on route to a 3-0 victory over England.Abby Wambach, Shannon Boxx & Kristine Lilly scored the goals in a great 12 minute span to put the game away. The U.S. will take on the winner of Brazil vs Australia in the semi's.Meanwhile in France, the Springboks must have felt pretty confident they could beat Tonga, so confident in fact that Jake White decided to start his reserves. This nearly resulted in a disaster. The Springboks defeated Tonga 30-25 only after placing starters back into the game after about 55 minutes. A win is a win I suppose and South Africa picked up a bonus point, however, this proves that you can take NO ONE lightly in this year's Rugby World Cup. I'm going to assume that you will see a full strength Springbok squad when they take on the U.S. next Sunday.England is taking on Samoa right now and are up 26-22 with ab

Here it is Saturday Morning and I'm in my normal state of confusion. I sit here on this long weekend holiday wondering what the hell the world is coming to!I have always hated the way kids now dress in "gangsta" clothes with their pants around their ass and underwear hiked up half a foot higher. Why a bunch of middle class suburban white kids want to emulate ghetto black kids is beyond me but the city elders in Atlanta have apparently had enough and passed a city ordinance banning "gangsta" clothing because it makes it too easy to hid drugs and weapons in the clothing. This harkens back to the 30's and 40's when zoot-suits were banned for the same reason. (I would ban them too, but on the grounds of good taste if nothing else.)Now, along the same sort of line, but something that has greater implications for most of middle-class America.I talked about how the police are an institution unto themselves and seem to be able to operate with impunity and total disregard for the very laws th

Good pitchin', Legs. Cubs exert superiority over D'Backs With the exception of Michael Wuertz. From the Trib: It was 105 degrees outside of Chase Field before Friday night's game, but Sean Marshall was calm, cool and collected on the inside. In his best outing in over a month, Marshall held Arizona to one run on two hits over six innings, striking out five. Marshall's dominance led the Cubs to a 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks, giving them six victories in their last eight games. With Milwaukee and St. Louis both losing, the Cubs moved a season-high 1½ games ahead of the Brewers, and are now four games ahead of the Cardinals. Manager Lou Piniella laughed when asked about having some breathing room at the top. "A game and a half?" he said. "My lord, if we ever open up three [games] ... We've really just got to play. At this time of year it's fun to watch the scoreboard, but you better concentrate on what you're doing, because if not, you can lose ground awfully quick." Consideri

The man of the hour, the man with the power, Jacque Jones. Redemption for Mr. Jones I guess it's a good thing he didn't end up in Florida. From the Trib: He speaks softly but carries a big stick, and now Jacque Jones is carrying the Cubs on his shoulders as well. Buried on the bench in late June and traded to Florida in July before a last-minute snag quashed the deal, Jones has gone from rags to riches like no other Cub. That's why his teammates are so jazzed when Jones decides a game, as he did on Friday in a 2-1 win over St. Louis at Wrigley Field. Jones' two-run, sixth-inning homer off Braden Looper halted the Cardinals' five-game win streak and helped vault the Cubs into sole possession of first place. "I figured as bad as I was in the first half, I didn't have anything to lose in the second half," Jones said. ... Jones received a standing ovation in the fifth after a great catch in the vines saved a run and ended the inning. Then Cardinals left fielder Ryan Ludwick made a

Dempster delusional I didn't see the game, so I don't know if they really were hitting good pitches, but it seems a bit delusional to me. From the Daily Herald: Cubs radio broadcaster Ron Santo's hatred of all things New York - especially the Mets - is of legendary proportion. But if things keep going like they have this season for Ryan Dempster when it comes to the Mets, Santo's going to have some company. That's because the Cubs' closer, who blew a 5-1 ninth-inning lead to the Mets at Shea Stadium in mid-May, suffered yet another meltdown Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field when he came on in the ninth with the game tied at 2-2. By the time the clowns were shoved back in the car, the Mets were rolling to a 6-2 victory and Dempster's record was dropping to 2-4. High five Big Z and Uncle Lou showin' love for Cuban Z hears the cash box opening. From the Daily Herald: Cubs manager Lou Piniella worked for George Steinbrenner in New York, so the prospect of flamboyant Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban buying the Cubs doesn’t seem to faze Piniella. Cuban reportedly has thrown his name into the ring to buy the team from the Tribune Co., which itself is up for sale. “He’s a winner,” Piniella said of Cuban. “He’s a character. He’s obviously got the resources. I do know he’s got a lot of charisma, and he likes the competition, and he likes to win. So certainly, he’s a very viable candidate. There’s going to be a lot of people that want to (buy) this franchise.” Piniella added that he can “work with anybody.” Pitcher Carlos Zambrano, on the other hand, has maybe 130 million reasons to want to play for Cuban. Turn it around today, sluggers. Like sands through the hourglass... Could this really happen? Really? From the Daily Herald: Guess who could be back in the Cubs’ picture. None other than Jacque Jones. Although the Cubs tried to trade Jones to the Florida Marlins last month, only to see the deal fall through, they may see him as a viable option in center field in the second half. Rookie Felix Pie hasn’t started since June 29. Cubs manager Lou Piniella and hitting coach Gerald Perry have been working with Pie on the side to modify his timing at the plate. The Cubs see Angel Pagan as a good backup player. Whenever the Cubs get back to 12 pitchers again from 11, they’ll have to move one position player off the roster. That player figures to be Pie. “In b.p. (batting practice), it seems like he’s taking better swings,” Piniella said. “In fairness to him, he probably needs some at-bats at game speed. Jones had a nice day (Thursday) night. (Daryle) Ward swung the bat, too.

From the Daily Herald: The plot had followed a disturbing arc, one that seemed to hold meaning not only for Friday’s game, but the rest of the Cubs’ season. A terrible start, reminiscent of the Cubs’ miserable May, surfaced in the form of a 5-run, first-inning deficit to the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers. Then the Cubs, as they have for most of June, slowly crawled out of their self-burrowed hole and drew closer to the team they’re pursuing. But as the afternoon went on, it seemed like the Cubs wouldn’t do enough to catch the Brewers. Not on this day. Maybe not ever. Then Aramis Ramirez swung his bat and changed the course of the game, the standings and, perhaps, the season. Or you could congratulate Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez for getting solo home runs off Mark Buehrle in the first inning before the White Sox’ ace settled down. With both teams foundering in their respective standings, the emotion seemed drained from the season’s second Cubs-Sox series. It became clear that Zambrano was going to make the 2 first-inning home runs stand up, and he did, giving up just 3 hits.
