Shareholders approved a deal Tuesday to allow Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. to acquire its rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. for about $5 billion, but the largest hurdle has yet to come regulatory approval in Washington.Shareholders of Sirius and XM had been widely expected to approve the deal, which would allow the companies to save costs on programming, acquiring subscribers and broadcasting. Shareholder advisory firms had already endorsed the deal.More difficult will be getting the deal approved in Washington, where the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission must both give their blessing. Several consumer groups have opposed the combination, saying it would create a monopoly that could hurt consumers.

      Satellite radio costs
By: Manuel Oborny Everybody has heard about satellites. But how many people heard about satellite radios? Satellite radio is a subscription radio service. It’s somehow identical to cable television, with the difference that it provides a wider range of stations not available on a standard AM / FM radio. There are many questions to be answered about satellite radios like “How does satellite radios work?”, “What kind of equipment should I purchase?” etc. but in this article I will try to answer a question that first pops up in everybody’s mind: “HOW MUCH DOES SATELLITE RADIO COST”? This is a tricky question because the cost of a satellite radio is divided in two: installation (or activation) costs and the monthly subscription fee. Activation costsActivation costs refers to the amount of money that are to be spent on a XM or Sirius Satellite Radio to start the service. Although you can find many promotions that allows you to save up money, the activation costs vary, being

Free Sirius Satellite Radio from DirecTV
By: David Johnson If you haven't yet heard of Sirius satellite radio, it is the latest technology in radio broadcasting and it is completely changing the way that we listen to radio. Rather than the radio signal being sent directly from the broadcasting station to the listeners, the signal is sent to a satellite positioned in stationary orbit in space above the earth and the signal can then be sent to far more people this way. It is paid for radio programming, so you get no commercials on it and also this means that there are no sponsors that the broadcasters have to appease. There is also no government censorship either, so the talk radio programming can be very provocative. There is a channel on Sirius satellite radio that is entirely devoted to every genre of music that you can imagine and because it is broadcast digitally from a satellite, everything comes in crystal clear. Howard Stern can only be heard on Sirius satellite now and he has finally parted paths with the censors that

FCC Seeks Public Comment On Satellite Radio Merger
Consumers invited to sound off on $4.7 billion deal to unite XM and Sirius The Federal Communications Commission issued a notice (PDF) asking for members of the public to voice their opinions on the merits of combining the nation's two satellite radio broadcasters. The notice marks the FCC's acceptance of the two companies’ applications to merge. The combined assets of the two media players were valued at approximately $4.7 million when the deal was first announced last February. The FCC now has less than 180 days to decide whether to approve the proposed merger, placing the deadline sometime in December of this year. The Department of Justice must also add its approval for the deal to proceed. The DOJ is charged with assessing whether the combination of the only two companies broadcasting audio programming via satellite within the United States would constitute an illegal monopoly. The two original satellite broadcast licenses granted to XM and Sirius by the FCC 1

XM Satellite Radio Caught Red Handed Lying
Is XM Satellite Radio owned by AOL? It sounds like they have not heard that people can record their calls too for quality assurance. Perhaps all people will have to start video logging all calls to companies to keep them honest. From the description of the video: First Call: May 15: Called to cancel my account and all my radios. Was told all radios canceled. Should've been over here right?Second Call: May 16th: Called to verify cancelation. Was told "All radios set to cancel on May 27th". I asked them "can you please make that effective immediately" They agreed.Third Call: May 17th: Figured I'd start video logging these calls since XM was obviously trying to pull shady tactics. Called to verify cancelation again. Was told all radios are still active. Transfered to cancelation department and the call was disconnected after being on hold for 7 minutes. Satellite Radio To Offer Different Plan Options
Reuters is reporting that after the Sirius and XM Radio merger, the new satellite company will offer different plans in a sort of a la carte option which will include a lower level of service with fewer channels that will be cheaper than their standard $12.95 a month option and a high level which will be above the $12.95 a month but cheaper than if you bought both services now combined.  They will also offer a $12.95 a month option with about the same number of channels.  The price has been a major discussion of the U.S. regulatory hearings.  While I think this might be a good solution, I’m not sure how well it’ll be received.  As a subscriber to XM Radio myself, I still think this merger is a bad idea as there will be no competition in the field and this merger may kill satellite radio.

What I'm currently listening to: AOL XM Satellite Radio
Listening to music is a great way to relax and just kick back. I always have music on my computer and my iPod to keep things lively. Normally if I wanted to listen to the radio I'd load up The Beat or Z95.3 from back home and sometimes Pandora. But that has all changed thanks to AOL XM Satellite Radio. I'd like to give a big shout out to An American in Ulsan as he let me know about this awesome service. AOL hasn't been in my good books in the past but things are starting to change (just a tiny bit). This free internet radio is powered by the XM Satellite Radio service. The best part is the CD quality Dolby AAC audio with over 200 AOL stations (the commercials are kept to a minimum; some are commercial free). The stations are awesome--in the Pop category they have ones such as All Mariah Carey, All Madonna, All Prince, and others. If you know of any other free music services, let me know! There is one thing I'd like to know--are there any AOL disk collectors out there reading my b
